I live in Myrtle beach, SC and I am in desperate need of a doctor who writes for methadone. I have many physical disabilities and my family doctor was writing it for me as I am unable to afford going to the clinic every day. I am willing to travel. I have called quite a few docs and they wont even see me due to the fact I am on Methadone. I hate the whole stigma that comes with it. Please if anyone knows of any Doctors here or in the surrounding area please let me know..

Well, you may be creating part of the problem yourself, if you are calling and asking if they prescribe Methadone.

When you call and ask if they will prescribe a specific medication, especially a controlled substance, most doctors will consider that to be drug seeking behavior. They view it as huge red flag and even their receptionists are warned about such requests and told not to accept these patients.

The best thing you can do is find a new doctor and just make sure that they get a full copy of your medical records, so they can see documented information from your prior doctor of what did and did not work for you.

Why is your family doctor no longer prescribing it for you?

It is not very common for a physician to write prescriptions for methadone for pain. Pain specialists can usually write the rx, but the question is, will they? Have you tried every other non narcotic treatment under the sun and every other weaker narcotic? If you don't have a detail medical history with all of those chronicled and listed as ineffective (with proof in imaging), it is very unlikely a doctor will write A prescription for the strongest narcotic available. Doctors SHOULD only prescribe this drug to those who have not only tried everything else (including combinations) to NO avail, but on,y those who have pain severe they can not be mobile without. Reason being, it's incredibly addictive. Some people need to be kept on a low dose for life. It's not something you want to take long term. So, go to a local pain clinic and be honest- tell them what's worked for you and what hasn't, and that you understand the stigma that comes along with a methadone patient, but that it's truly changed your life. Do not ask for methadone and don't even mention it until the dr asks what you've tried.

Your right in fact when I found a new doctor a while back the receptionist asked me if I was going to be needing opiates. That was before she even made the appointment. A patient should never ask for opiates benzos or anything like those until you have the appointment. If the doctor was prescribing them and the patient brings proof of injury, old RX bottles that will help
