Fentanyl Lozenges

Updated

I am on the 100 mcg fentanyl patch and 4 mgs hydromorphone for breakthrough pain, does anyone know about the fentanyl lozenges for breakthrough pain? I’d like to request my doctor take me off hydromorphine and change to the lozenges for my breakthrough pain, I’m wondering if someone is doing this already? Thank you

In many cases, Fentanyl isn't doubled up due to the very real risk of overdosing the patient. It is a very potent narcotic, so a doctor has to be very cautious regarding how much they prescribe, and how frequently it is to be taken.

The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.

An overdose, however, may be fatal.

Why do you want to switch away from the Hydromorphone?

Thank you, yes that makes sense, just thinking of staying on one kind of med but that’s fine,

I was on 75 every 48hrs (because I absorbed them quicker; guess I am really hot; lol). I never heard of lozenges only lollipops; & these were usually only given to terminal cancer patients... My pdoc buckled to fed recommendations. I guess they are too lazy to add an explanation of why the meds script rate is so high ... as that is what is what fed wants .... my xrays & MRI's clearly show I was a viable candidate for higher dose rates ....

I did go spinal cord stimulator (boston scientific) (there are videos on YouTube about this route both by companies and those using them) (djporkchop(xx) has a three year blog about his experience) but it has helped a lot .. I am not pain free but I can get by on the very few meds I get now .... check out videos & see what ya think it is covered by Medicare...... hoping you improve & feel better soon

Just so your aware I have tried the Fentanyl lollipop I can't remember the mcg. But I tell you it worked VERY well a lot better than the patch. If you ever start having problems with the patch not lasting long enough you might want to switch to the lollipop good luck
