Ear Infection Drops Question About Neomycin & Polymyxin B Sulfates & Hydrocortisone Otic Liquid Solution
(Newest replies first)

I went to a clinic this past wednesday & had a massive ball of wax removed from my right ear & the pain in my right ear has subsided. Now my left ear feels like its full, clogged & hurts on & off since wednesday but 2 doctors in that clinic assured me there's no wax in my left ear BUT that my left middle inner ear has "supposed" fluid in it that needs to dry OUT. So I was prescribed amoxicillin 2x a day for 10 days & prednisone 40mg a day for 4 days ((to dry out my left ear, which steroid makes no sense to dry my ear out anyway??)). Well amoxicillin I am fine with but the prednisone left me with the worst acid reflux (since I'm an acid reflux sufferer), awful hives from head to toe, & was shaking horrificly like a leaf because I took prednisone for 2 horrible days which didn't change the pressure/fullness in my left ear anyway. So when I called the clinic back & screamed bloody murder about how this incompetent doctor on rotation landed me in an ER because of prednisone another rotating doctor (don't have primary care doctor since last year & can't afford an ENT specialist) another doctor from a different clinic office told me to take pseudophedrine 30mg 2x a day for 5 days ONLY & to finish up the rest of the amoxicillin to dry up my inner middle ear. Ok so I'm following this 2nd doctor's orders but still NO RELIEF. And sad to say now my right ear is bothering me on and iff for the past few days as well.

Now my question is the last time I had an ear ache I was given Falcon's Neomycin & Polymyxin B Sulfates & Hydrocortisone Otic Solution (liquid) & I want to know since I have an almost unused bottle of this stuff where the expiration date is 12/2015 can this liquid medicine help & resolve the fullness & cloggyness in my left inner middle ear problem?? I have no primary care doctor & the clinics around my way are closed today BUT have read great stories where this medicine helps alot or just horror stories where this medicine closes up your hearing or makes the fullness/cloggyness of your ears worse. Mind you when I used it the first time I felt human again BUT all this talk about this liquid solution helps with outer ear then I read it helps with inner ear which is it before I do more harm than good in my left ear?? Thanks to all the folks who answer my question using this Neomycin liquid solution by Falcon Pharmecueticals.

I don't blame the person for shouting at the doctor's. I wish I had the nerve. One E NT did surgery for an infection and made my husband permanently deaf! The same one prescribed a fungal drop that tore my ear drum! We did not say a word to the man. Doctor's are not god's!

Wow Veron! I've fungus currently in left ear and fluid in right ear. ER Dr diagnosed me and wrote script of Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Hydrocortisone Otic Solution.THEN a week later I saw my Dr of Internal Medicine. I told him about ER visit. I handed him bottle of ear drops and WITHOUT EVER EXAMINING MY EARS he directed me to use drops in both ears. Oh..I was told by Dr at ER visit that I was keeping my ears too clean. ?? I'm going to try it in both at this very moment.

Please help, I had an outer ear infection and I was given the neomycin polymyxin b and I didn't take it correctly at all. It was supposed to be for 3 drops three times a day for 10 days and I did like 1-2 drops twice a day for 10 days... I think this is why it didn't clear up. Do you think it's safe if I can take the ear drops all over again? I'm dying with pain again :/

Thanks for your help

Hi just wanted to know... Is it normal when using Neomycin-Polymyxin drops in my ear for the first few times to have a clogged, muffled sensation? I went to an ENT today and he removed a HUGE ball of wax from behind my eardrum. What a relief. Anyway, just want to make sure that I'm not taking a step backwards by taking these drops? Please someone assure me ? Never felt such intense pain before... Constant 4 6 days straight!!

Neomycin is only for the outer ear, not the inner ear. It is also basically the active ingredient of neosporin cream, and is designed for minor infections. The ear drum is a membrane that separates the outer ear canal from the middle ear, and then there is the inner ear. The drops will not get there. The fluid in your middle ear (behind the ear drum) builds up sometimes because the eustachian tube gets too swollen to allow it to drain (probably why the prescribed you steroids). Bacteria can sometimes grow there when this happens. Also the doctor wasn't incompetent since you never told him you were allergic to prednisone, he couldn't have known it would give you hives. No reason to be rude to doctors.

My son had an ear infection and was prescribed neomycin-polymyxin-hc. I woke up this am with what appears to be pink eye. Cold I use the drops for the ear for my eye?? I appreciate my ability to see so I don't want to use them if it would be harmful.

I am taking Ciclor and using the neomycin and polymyxin ear drops for an ear infection. I notice the word sulphate on the bottle, since I'm allergic to sulpha I want to know if there is a problem with taking the ear drops or not.

Hi All,
I used cotton bud to clean off wax an I started felling acute pain and cloggyness. I went to the Hospital and the Dr. prescribed neomycin sulphate and Polymycin-B to use before seeing the EMT doctor later this week. I've use 2 drops of the ear drop once but looks like it increases the cloggyness . Pls is there anything I can use to stop the cloggyness. ? I'm using a pain relief drug which takes care of the pain

Regards
James

Hi, Ann! Wow, what an adventure, I'm very sorry you're suffering so much.

These drops can help with both inner and outer ear infections, it's the amount used that makes the difference. For an inner ear infection, it would be 2 or 3 drops just to reach that part of the ear, but if it's an outer ear infection you'd need 4 or 5 drops to completely fill the ear canal and reach the outer ear area.

I actually still have part of a bottle sitting here myself from an outer ear infection I had last fall.

It can make the fullness and clogged feeling a bit worse, at first, because you are basically forcing a liquid substance into your ear which isn't normally done and it can take a few days for the medications to work to start clearing up the infection.

I'm not a doctor, so I can't tell you to go ahead and use it, you really do need to see a doctor for an appropriate diagnosis and solution. I can only provide you with information on the medication.

Aside from the clogged/full feeling these drops may also cause some reddening of the ear, a burning sensation and some other topical irritation.

And a tip to help prevent recurrent infections in the future is to get yourself some good sealing earplugs, such as Hearos and use them anytime you shower, bathe or swim to prevent water getting into your ears.

Are there any other questions or concerns?
