Donnatal Replacement
UpdatedThis removal makes no sense to me, as you can still get ( mostly) the liquid mixture! Of course it's much more difficult to travel with, and may leak! Frankly, I've been infuriated by the removal of a drug I desperately need, with little or nothing to replace it. I get severe Esophageal Spasms, and never know when they are going to strike! They truly do feel like having a heart attack too, but if you go to the hospital, all you get is a name for yourself as drug- seeking....no matter how necessary the medication is! I find the whole thing ridiculous and more of a punishment than anything else. I fail to understand the FDA's thinking on this and other issues, as they've been safely used for many years. Any info on replacements or reinstatement would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, ConiKat! How are you? I am very sorry about the problems that you're having.
The main issue is that the ingredients weren't actually ever tested for efficacy and, over years of use, it has been found to not be much more effective than placebos at treating the conditions it was prescribed for and claimed to treat. Once the FDA began insisting that such medications undergo testing, most manufacturers opted out of spending the money, due to the fact that since they aren't frequently used, it would be very difficult for them to make back their investment.
That said, if you are getting a liquid from your pharmacy, they should be able to dispense in a container that doesn't leak. Alliteratively, you could try having your doctor prescribe it to be compounded for you from a speciality compounding pharmacy, so you can get it in capsules, if they still have the ingredients available. Though, I'm not sure what it would cost and if insurance would cover that.
Side effects to this medication may include bloating, flatulence, blurred vision and feeling restless.
What other medications have you tried to treat this issue?
