Does Benadryl Help Dry Fluid From Behind Eardrum

Hello, I was diagnosed with Pneumonia 4 weeks ago, tried Zpack it didn't work then I tried Ampicillin it cleared up the Pneumonia but left me with fluid behind the ear drum the pharmacist suggested Benadryl, I do have another bottle of amoxicillin. I'm not in pain, no infection per ENT my hearing is just badly impaired.

It is a decongestant, so it can have a drying effect and might help. Side effects to it may include dizziness, drowsiness and dry mouth.

However, you should only take it, if your doctor says that it is safe for you to do.

More antibiotics won't help, since they only treat bacterial infections and will do nothing to dry up the remaining fluid. Plus, taking them inappropriately could result in your developing antibiotic resistance.

Please be advised that the active ingredient in most Benadryl products is diphenhydramine; diphenhydramine is an anthistamine and is NOT a decongestant. Diphenhydramine has been well documented to slow or even stop the function of the cilia in the middle ear (as well as the nose and sinuses); it may also increase the viscosity ("stickiness") of middle ear mucus (as well as the mucus of the nose, sinuses, trachea, bronchi, etc.). Therefore, while allergy may also reduce normal mucociliary clearance, diphenhydramine is NOT a good option for long-term use of middle ear fluid (and may also reduce the normal cleaning functions of the nose, sinuses and lower airway). IF allergy is playing a role in middle ear disease, other antihistamines with less negative impact on mucociliary clearance might be an option.
