Doctors Who Will Prescribe Anxiety Medications

Updated

Ihave been taking xanax the past 18 years only as needed. This medication not only helps with my severe anxiety and anger problems. My current doctor for the past 2.5 years has been giving me xanax to take twice a day for a 30 day supply and this usually last me about 6months. Well my PCP has been instructed by his NP that new guidelines state he cant prescribe xanax but klonopin is ok. Is this truely a guidline in MS or simply a recommendation? As I can not find any literature confirming this. Although the klonopin is working ok it takes hours for my anger to subside when it would be immediate with xanax. My other complaint is that klonopin has a longer half life and remains in my body longer than xanax causing me to be extremely sleepy the morning after taking the klonopin but never had this problem with xanax. What are the prescrbing guidlines for these meda in mississippi? I think the NP is wrong and it is based solely on her personal bias for these drugs...as a matter of fact I have seen this NP refused to see patients if she THINKS they are trying to be seen just to gain narcotics. She is very judgemental and refuses to go into the room to see patients and will send them away without even speaking to these patients. I would to know of any new prescribing regulations or laws for PCP being able to prescribes these kinds of meds. Thanks

First of all, an NP does not instruct an MD, just doesn't work that way. With that said there are some Doctors who will move you off Xanax to Klonopin claiming it is not as addictive and you will have less problems on it. This couldn't be further from the truth although it does work similar to Xanax!

Hello, Juju! How are you?

Yes, the DEA did set forth new instructions last year that restrict what general practice doctors can prescribe, why they can prescribe it and how much they can prescribe.

If you wish to continue taking Xanax, rather than the Klonopin, you'll need see a psychiatrist.

The FDA lists these medications as most commonly being used to treat anxiety and nervous disorders. They carry the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability.

As to refusing to see someone, no medical practitioner is obligated to see and treat anyone, unless they are in immediate life threatening danger.

If you want to continue the Klonopin, you'd be better of taking it regularly, as prescribed, because that would enable it to reach its full level of efficacy in your body and would allow your body to get used to it, so the side effects wear off. Most medications work better, if taken regularly, unless they are specifically prescribed to only be taken when needed.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Actually, Klonopin is more effective, less addicting and an overall better drug for Panic Attack Disorder than Xanax. (Panic Attack Disorder is the ONLY official indication for Xanax,) Any doc who maintains a pt on XANAX for 18 years is ****n. Klonopin is more effective, requires fewer doses daily. (RULE: The greater number of doses of an addictive drug you take the more likely you are to become addicted.) There also are a few benzes more effective the Xanax for Anxiety Disorder and even PAD. The comment that you'll have to see a shrink like me is well-founded but an NP who instructs an MD hardly ever happens, unless I'm in the ER because we're shorthanded that a manis in heavy labor, I'd pay real money for an OBG NP (or an OB RN). However, I'm open to suggestions, but I'm the doc and I'm even head of the Dept. of Psych. I wonder if this NP passed the Board for the Prescriptive Privilege. Even if she did; she's overstepping her grounds. I've had a few such NPs who think they're docs wrk for my department. I warned them once or twice in writing then fired them.

The use is "
the shorter acting the rug, the more addicting" — and its he;d since the 1930s. Xanax is a short-acting benzo; Klonopin is long-acting. prescribe these rugs and supervise and entire department that treats psych disorders. What expertise do you have? And, by the way, the NP with the Prescriptive Privilege can opt not to have the doc see a patient; it's a form of TRIAGE. If you don't know what you're talking about, say nothing and it's obvious you may have abused Xanax and Klonopin, but you've never studied them.

From what l know, Nurse Practitioners work under the license of a doctor. Also, I don't the NP can write a script for narcotics. The only thing that a doctor might be held responsible for, is over prescribing. Xanax is a act now benzo. Meaning if you are having an attack, the Xanax will kick in about 15 to 20 mins. If you put the Xanax under your tongue it will kick in about 5 to 10 mins. Klonopin is more long-term, once it reach the therapeutic level it will control your symptoms.

Hi Dr. Joey, Xanax is also anxiety disorders, and as you stated panic disorders and anxiety caused by depression. Xanax is addictive because of its short life. For example: once Xanax is taken the effects could last 3 to 4 hours then wear off. This will prompt some people to take more Xanax.

Ok here's the deal. There has been new "guidelines" set. Fast acting benzodiazepines, are only prescribed for severe anxiety attacks. Since anxiety is not an issue that usually comes and goes, these long acting benzodiazepines are prescribed just because they are that, long acting. So asking for a short acting benzodiazepine to treat a long acting anxiety problem is not going to work out.

This medication will cause impulsive, anger, or rage like behavior. It is also suspected of causing dementia. 18 yrs is too long. You deserve to be treated in such a way as to improve your quality of life.

Re: Verwon (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

I have been taking Xanax for years for panic attacks.. I kept putting off seeing my doctor because I really hate going. Well what happened was I ran out four days before my appointment.. I went into through hell I felt disconnected, my muscles were twitching and when I tried to talk my words I oils barely come out. Every little noise was torture I was suffering from panic attacks many times each day..The only thing that saved me from having seizures was I had some Ambien and I was taking two a day just to be able to close my eyes.. when I finally had my appointment. I told him what happened and both of us agreed that I should get off the Xanax and put on Klonopin..I don’t ever need to go through that hell ever again. Plus I like the Klonopin better. If I forget to take a pill I don’t have that feeling of coming off of it like thenXanax. I’m sticking with the Klonopin

How did you keep on getting your Xanax without seeing the Doctor for years? Don't fool yourself, you were going through withdrawal and Klonopin is the same deal, really!

Re: EDDY (# 13) Expand Referenced Message

I’m sorry Eddy. I should have explained myself better.. When I said I kept putting off seeing my doctor, I meant putting it off for a few weeks.. I ran out before my appointment and that’s when I went through withdrawals. As for going through withdrawals on Klonopin. I’ve been on Benzos since the 1970’s and at that time I only had Valium. Xanax didn’t hit the market until 1983 and that’s how long I’ve been on them. I asked to be switched because if something happens and I miss my appointment again. (I hope that never happens). The WD’s from Klonopin are about the same but the half-life is so much longer so I won’t suffer 12 hours after a missed dose.. I’m 62 years old and Ive been suffering from panic attacks for longer than I care to remember so I have no intention of stopping these medications..

Re: EDDY (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

Eddy. All of the Benzos are addictive..Xanax is IMHO no more addicting than Klonopin. It’s just that Xanax is much harder to kick because of its short half life.. Make no mistake all benzos are hard to get off of.

I have been taking lorazepam and clonazepam for anxiety for a year, and ambien for insomnia for over 15 years but now my clinic will not prescribe them anymore. The other things they are substituting it with are not effective. Who will prescribe them? I have Medicaid in the Tulsa/Broken Arrow area.

A NP can most certainly write scripts for narcotics. If you don't know or not for sure don't make such statements.
