Dilaudid Pain Pump

Updated

I would like to talk to anyone who has a pain pump with Dilaudid. My mother has a pain pump and I am worried she will be on it for the rest of her life. She has had the pump for many years and I feel it has affected her greatly. She had to have all her teeth pulled because they were rotting and she also has a problem with her tongue burning and red all the time. I am worried she will never get off the pain pump because she is addicted... she also falls asleep all the time even while you are talking to her. Thanks for any advice.
Teresa.

Dilaudid contains the active ingredient Hydromorphone, this is a narcotic analgesic.

There is a different between addiction and dependence.

Dependence, which is more than likely what is happening to your mother, occurs when you are just using something regularly for a long period of time.

Addiction occurs when you abuse a drug and keep taking more and more, beyond what is prescribed.

What she is experiencing are common side effects, these may include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and constipation.

Unfortunately, if she has a condition requiring pain treatment, she may never be completely medication free.

Have you spoken to her doctor about your concerns?

After using Fentynal patches for three years, I've been on my pump filled with dilaudid for the past two and one-half years. I need t get a refill every six weeks due to my flow rate and the fact that my pump has only a 21 cc reservoir. I have had my flow rate adjusted numerous times to get where I'm at today. I used to fall asleep awhile in mid conversation, etc. My suggestion is to try and redeive a small enough flow to minimize the pain to the point where you can live with some of it. That's what I've done as time progresses and I need to make adjustments, (up and down - I always feel better when I'm warm so during the summer I have cut back, and in winter icrease it some), I will. I'll be on this stuff called dilauddid til the day I die which probably will come sooner because of it. C

Hello,

What is the approximate cost of dilaudid refill for a newer Medtronics pump. I don't have prescription coverage and wonder if this is covered under normal medical coverage or if only under prescription. And if it's not covered then I don't know if I can afford it.

Check with different medical drug supply companies.. some charge more for Dilauted than others. check with your insurance, or medicaid if you qualify. you do need a doctor for it, to fill your pump.

Narcotics don't affect your organs from what I've read. They have looked at cadavers of people who took them for long periods of time and there was no organ damage. That doesn't mean they aren't harmful at all, I really don't know. I'm not an expert, so please just take this as hearsay, but I don't think you have to worry about Dilaudid killing you. The Tylenol they put in Percoset is bad for the liver if more than 4000mg per day is taken. The oxycodone itself doesn't harm the liver like this. Why they put the acetaminophen is a mystery to me. It's not like addicts are going to care how much Tylenol is in their Percoset. But that's what docs want to prescribe.

.What is she useing it for and how old is she ? If she sleeping a lot, maybe her med has to be drop down a little. It exfect her breathing, which makes her sleepy. If she wants to stop it, it will have to be done slow and i mean real slow..Depending on her disease she might be on it forever..

Is she using as directed or over using...I've been on pain meds for years and have learned if taken properly, teeth rotting is rare. I'd be more worried about her liver and kidneys. I'm not on pump however. How does it work?

I became addicted to d's(street slang for Dilaudid) in my very early 20's. I had been a poly drug abuser all through my teens, with 6 month runs of Heroin. No monkey, but quality control problems along with the loss of many friends. Twenty months of d's and I lost my d doctor. Lots of drama followed. Enter Methadone. Save me and possibly others. At 40 I do 8yrs 4months for Uncle Sam. No "done". Two yrs into my bit I'm injured on my job(1996). No correct medical diagnosis. Fed caused me to get IBS from all the NSAID's given. Same BS when I'm out. Start on class III's and end up getting morphine for pain. Praise the internet.

I had my pump put in this past may. My doctor has me on moriphine. I have been going through mild to severe withdrawals since the initial surgery. I was on oral meds of every kind for 10 years prior to the pump. Mydoctor has given me minimal oral medication while finding the right dosage for me. It has been a difficult transition and I really dont have a support system. Does anyone know what the average mlg per day of morphine is? This is having such a negative affect on my life that depression is starting to affect me also.

I just had the pain pump placed with dilaudid. It isn't the same effect feeling that you would get if you got it through in iv. I don't have any side effect. I do continue to take oral pain meds am allotted 2-2 1/2 percocet 10's a day and I am roughly taking 1-1 1/2 per day yes some days are worse than other but, overall I am having a great or good experience with the pump.

I'm a chronic pain person because of an injury to L4, L5 & S1 and SI joint problems. Arthritis and stenosis are big factors in the pain and inflammation (which is responsible for most of the pain, as I am told). Lots of drugs daily over 7 years. Not anymore. Medical marijuana Seriously.
The surgeon that fused my spine with 2 rods, screws and baskets said that I should get the morphine/dilauded pump, installed into me. He told me I'd get very small amounts injected in the area on a prescribed plan.
Then I talked to a couple of his patients while I awaited his partner who sold patients on pumps then installed them. Big money.
One fellow said he got spinal meningitis twice because of the intrusion into his spinal fluid. I lost a friend to that disease. It was from something else. You don't want to go that way. Took three years to kill him.
Before you take that step read this article. There are many studies that are now proving the same results. I believe the reduction in inflammation plays a huge pare in reducing my pain dramatically enough to have quit the narcotics, on my own, after 7 - 8 years on them.
It's very real. GOOGLE this:
UCSF Study Finds Medical Marijuana Could Help Patients Reduce Pain with Opiates

Good luck

I have recently been given Dilaudid 2mg that are an orange type colour with a capital "P" on one side but nothing on the other.
I usually look up my drugs before I take them, and all I can seem to find is orange in colour ones that a large "P" on one side and a 2 on the other.
Just wondering why mine say P without a 2, but when I research it it states a P on one side and 2 on the other.
Pharmacy is closed for the night so I'm hoping someone can answer this for me as I'm a chronic pain patient and worried to try this new drug because of researching it. Thanks.

I have a Medtronics pump in me now for at least 3 years. Most times, pumps do not just contain hydromorphone but also has clonidine and baclofen. One is a muscle relaxer the other an anti-axiatant. It is very important you know whats in it just in case of emergeny so doctors don't cause problems mixing drugs. To answer your question, changing the morphine to dilaudid is a change that can cause the body to have some reaction. What your pain doc should have done was start weaning you off the morphine (not all the way just partially), then change medicine. Like me, I'm sure there are other meds in there and if he changed them as well, it might cause other symptoms. Just be patient but be wise. If you vitals rise, please contact your medical doctor. After reviewing the replies to my November post in regard to pain pumps and associated complications, some never experience these issues, but since there has been a big push to implant these devices because of opioid overuse I want to see what changes are made over a two year period before jumping on the band wagon. Yes I am in excruciating pain with severe mobility issues and am taking opioids, muscle relaxers and the usual pain control methods; however, long term I don't want to make the issues worse by having the pain pump and meds cause other potential problems. Also there appears to be inconsistencies between doctors as to the meds used, dosing and even the fact there may not be a doctor within reasonable proximity to fill and maintain the device. I will continue to monitor this site and comments as they have been really helpful.

I have had my pain pump with Dilaudid and Marcain. Ive gone up on the dose slightly due to tolerance over the last 12 years of having it. Initially the pain doctor put morphine in the pump but that caused too many side effects. I too was on Fentanyl 75mcg before the pump. The implantable TENS unit made my Chronic nerve pain much worse. Once i got the meds (dilaudid and marcaine) tweaked it was and still is a gift from God. I couldnt live with the pain yet couldn't function with the side effects of oral/patches/IV opioid. The pump has allowed me to function as a normal human and i never had a problem with the pump itself or the Dilaudid. Maybe the pain dr. Has other meds in the mix? A pain mgmt physician that specializes in such devices needs to evaluate your mother and perhaps find out if she's having a reaction to one of the meds typically used in pumps. Also, even if she and her physician decided it would be best to remove her pump, the physician has to decrease the meds in the pump very slowly to avoid life threatening withdrawal syndrome, not to mention the in-retractable pain she would end up in if suddenly discontinued from dilaudid. Perhaps find another pain mgmt physician that specializes in pain pumps for 2nd opinion to get all facts and options. There's a lot more involved than simply removing a pain pump.

I have been a dilauda pain pump patient for 17 years now. It’s has not effected me.The pain pump has giving me a better quality of life. Its the way a good pain doctor that gives his patience the correct amount slowly and he always has me to have a spray of narcan just in case of any reaction.Anyone on narcotic pain control needs to have a shot or a spray of narcan just for safety to counter the effects of any narcotic therapy. And my Dr.Robert Hien has been the best of any pain pump control doctor I have ever had.He very careful on controlling narcotic pain pump solely on durations and on a bolus.Other Medication could have reaction that your mother has.Always talk to your pain doctor on other medication.I hope this may help you understand a better quality of life.My blessings are with your mother!

I have been in severe back, leg, foot, arm and hand pain for 10 years. Had multiple surgeries which did not help, in fact Dr's said no more surgeries. Oxycodone is the only drug that works but to any degree. The only way to reduce pain is to lay down. As soon as I get up the pain is on. I have a spinal cord stimulator that helps about 20 % and can actually make the pain worse. Two years ago I asked about a pain pump implant, 4 Dr's said absolutely not as these are only for terminal patients. I was also told the medication will degrade the bone structure over time. Now with the opioid issues the Dr's want to implant the pump stating this will work without any other issues. So what's the real story? There are not enough up to date studies available. I have real doubts that all of a sudden the pump is the best thing since sliced bread. Any comments out there? Also, is anyone using medical marijuana for pain control? Thank you.

My husband got his Medtronic pump in June. It has been the miracle we gave been praying for over the past 7 years. His dose is finally stable and hasn't had to rrefill for a little over 2 months since he opted for the 40 ml size. I thank God everyday for bringing the new pain management dr into the practice who ultimately referred us to the new pain doctor who did the surgery and maintains his pump. God is good.

Re: CJK (# 12) Expand Referenced Message

I have had my pain pump with Dilaudid and Bropivicain for two years now. It affects you completely different from oral pain meds. I NEVER feel high or drowsy.I have my pump for chronic pain. I thank God everyday that I found this Dr. I was on just about every opioid for the last 15-20 years, those drugs affected me greatly. I would never drive on them. NOW I feel normal with just small pain, when I don't need to have surgery that's another story. It don't really help with surgical pain. Good luck

Re: CJK (# 12) Expand Referenced Message

The Pump has given me a much better quality of life than the oral(and Fentinyl patches) that I had to use for 7 years prior to pump being put in. It does not however come without it's own side effects, getting it regulated can be tricky. Also I have now developed severe bouts of edema in my legs. But in all things considered the pump has been my slvation! Best wishes
