Dilaudid In Pain Pump With Alcohol

Hi everyone,

My mom has a dilaudid pump thing. I really don't know much about it in terms of dosage or anything. She's had 6 back surgeries. She has been having a drink or two (vodka) every now and then. Is that problematic?

Hello, Liz! How is your mom doing?

The problem with mixing a narcotic and alcohol is due to the fact that they both cause depression of the central nervous system, so it could result in lowered heart rate, blood pressure and shallow breathing. It can also cause aggravation of some of the side effects, so she may feel more dizziness, drowsiness and nausea than usual, because it kind of potentiates each drink.

The best thing to do would be to have her check with her doctor. In some cases, there may not be any issues with someone having the occasional drink or two, but much of it depends on her overall health and liver function.

Drinking with a pain pump might not be a good idea. If it’s becoming a daily habit, please please be careful. As the pump does not go to your head you don’t feel euphoric...but the meds are in you. Please be careful...
