I had problems just stopping cold turky after one doctor told me it would be ok, i felt panicky and anxious. Another doctor said to reduce the dose slowly over time or i will get withdrawal syptoms, One day on, one day off (2 weeks)then one day on two days off (2 weeks) so on, i still had problems and had to do it over the space of months. I am now down to one morning dose a day and ready to stop completely (after 6 months) and am feeling ok

Any drug or substance that you take into your body for a prolonged period of time will cause some mild withdrawal symptoms if you abruptly stop using it, even if they don't consider it addictive. Because your body gets used to it and becomes unused to functioning without it, this includes everything from your morning coffee to even over the counter meds.

Therefore, to avoid this, it is always easier on you to taper off slowly.

I was on 80mg propanolol for 1 year due to stressful job and tremors. I got laid off and went back to 40 mg right away, and continued on that for a few months. Started getting really cold all the time during the winter, and reduced the dose again, then started getting chest pains in January. I did a stress ekg in May-he made me get my heart rate up to 170 beats per minute and I haven't felt right since then. He told me to quit the propanolol as it seemed to be slowing my heart rate too much. Now I'm getting a lot of chest pain and wondering if I did some damage by taking too much (80mg) and then coming off too quickly, although it wasn't that quickly. Any comments? The doc said I have benign arrhythmia and had nothing to worry about but now I have a lot of pain and am going to see another doc.

I take 10mg in morning and 10mg at night, doenst sound like much but when I try to cut night pill in half to decrease dose it makes my heart rate extrmly high. Wondering how long that will last till my body becomes accustom to the half pill, and will it continue when I cut back on morning pill. Dr. says to do it anyway.

Hi, I as well am on 10mg twice daily. I am 37, had a severe migraine in nov with high BP, and facial lt numbness. It was a month straight of migraines, but I put up with it. This same thing happened at age of 24, but lasted a short period.. So dr said letsntrybthisbas BP was high. I am active not overweight but have a high stress job. So I have been on this for 10weeks. This last few weeks have been hell, not a headache but cold drenched sweats at night,so achy to joints I could cry. I wake up step on my feet and they have that frozen puffy feeling. And sex drive blah hubby noted my mood to be all over map too. Dr doesn't feel any of this is related to med. I can sleep on a dime now where as before I needed gravol to help sleep. Hubby now finds me at 8:30 sawing logs with glasses on and my i pad in my hand, I have the clinical signs of depression but have no reasons to be. I know this is a low dose.. Although its worked wonders for migraines I seem to be falling apart everywhere else. Did u feel like this at all being on such a small tiny dose? Can anybody relate to the small dose??? I think I may wean myself off cause I ain't the same gal I was 3 months ago.

I take the same medicine everyday and the same dosage as well, but lately I was feeling anxious so my doctor increased my dosage which is 40miligrams per day. My mood is always changing as well. I'm always sad, angry,or hungry. It really sucks!

I have been on 80 mg Inderal for over 20 years for migraine prevention, very successful. I started having severe tremors approximately 4 weeks ago, been hospitalized and no medical reason found so far. Tuesday I realized I had been missing my daily dose for a week or so. I started by 2 days ago and there were no tremors today. Could that be the cause of the tremors?

I've been taking propanolol for about seven years for migraines. Originally 40mgs twice a day. I've managed to cut down to just 10mgs taken at night but it's been hard. This last 10mg is difficult to give up. I feel heady if I don't take it. I've been having very vivid dreams and occasional sweats at night. Some problems with lethargy too. In seven years my life has changed immeasurably so I really don't know if I need it anymore. Tapering off seems to be the only way to kick the habit. I will stop soon and suffer the consequences if there are any. I never realised it would be so hard coming off this stuff. Good luck

I have been taking 40mg of Propranolol 2 times a day for almost 2yrs and I stopped taking it about 20days ago and right after stopping my ankles started to swell and this last week i have started itching all over and it seems to come and go. Today i had chest pains for about 20minutes and then they went away. I am 49yrs old and I am wondering if not being on the medication is causing the itching. I have tried taking Benadryl, but it only puts me to sleep and when i wake up, it all starts again. Any ideas if stopping taking it is causing the itching?

I used to take 1 pill of 10mg only when we were eating out due to benign essential tremor which affected my palms when I ate. As we were going on holiday to Vienna on May 14, I had started taking 1 10mg pill every morning 1 week before departing and continued for 4 more days while in Vienna. I noticed that I was sweating after about 10 minutes of walking. And felt somewhat tired after climbing a flight of stairs. I used to drink wine, more than I used to at home. I stopped taking propranolol as I thought that they may have been the cause of some tiredness.

After returning home on 21 May (last Tuesday) I have stayed at home, but yesterday evening (May 24) I decided to go for a walk, but felt a bit short of breath and decided to return back home after about 7 minutes of normal walking. I checked my BP after resting and it was 113 / 75 / and 75 pulse rate. but noticed that I had an irregular heart beat, which shows up in my BP monitor.

I had a similar Irregular Heart Beat in March 2010 which lasted for a couple of months, but it cleared up and never had it since. I had it checked then by a 24 hour test (Holtor test, I believe it is called ) and the doctor said that I had nothing to worry about.

Could the present irregular heartbeat be the effect of propranolol and the more than usual wine drinking ( Vienna is renowned for its wine !) ?

I am weening off propranolol 10mg every month. My dry eye is worse. I have problems with my distance vision (almost double vision) and increasesed eye pain. Hard to explain it. This happened when I started this medication as well. I needed it for migraines due to a post concussion. I asked my pharmacist today and she said it's not from the meds, to talk to my doctor.
She is wrong. This is the 2nd time weening off of it (tried 6 months ago) and the same thing happened. It's real and it hurts.

My friend was taking this medication regularly ,she was suffering from panic attacks and palpitations, she went to many specialist trying to find out why she was having these feelings. At the last resort she went to have an Echo test because of the palpitations, but luckily the doctor who she saw having these attacks asked her what was she taking in the form of medication. She mentioned this Propranolol, immediately she told her to stop taking it. She never looked back.she never suffered panic attacks nor palpitations again. Before you stop them yourself tell your Dr you want to come off them.

Did you quit propranolol cold turkey? My husband is worried about side effects, but on it, my heart rate is only near 47, which is too low. It’s also causing all sorts of other problems like dizziness and I’ve fallen several times.

I'm 27, I was currently placed on antihypertensive drugs which are vasoprin, lisinopril, and amlong. Propanol was later added to lower pulse rate. But I noticed that after taking one dose of the drug at night, I had chest tightness, difficult breathing for a while and then tingling reaction on my tongue and lower jaw. Should I stop the drug?

Adult male here.
About 5 years ago i quit drinking. Anxiety, panic attacks, migraines and PTSD resurfaced. Went to the doctor and the waiting room triggered me. As a normal physiological response to a perceived threat, my BP rose. Now in the doctors office, they look at my BP and say "wow it's so high!" I try to explain but since it wasn't on file... got prescribed propranolol. 10mg twice a day. Would get migraine in the afternoon so this was increased to 10mg 3 times a day / every 6 hours.

Starting off with the side effects. It's like my lungs are coated in cement. Very hard to breath. Lung capacity has been reduced to about 30-50% of it's normal function. I told the doctor this she aid "Ya, it'll do that to ya!" casually... This has not gone away but i have gotten use to it. One day when out for a walk got hit with a tremendous difficulty of maintaining normal posture. Also, exercise tolerance has become really low. Gradually over the course of 4 years i can now barely do daily chores. shower, cook meals, go up and down the stairs 8+ times a day... without being exhausted after. Body is weakened. I'm sure heart is weakened as well. Psoriasis and very dry skin. Eye infections and ear infections. Takes much longer to heal on this drug. It weakens the immune system. Sometimes i get hit with sudden vertigo / imbalance, feeling of dread and more. This is more uncommon.

One time i had to go to the hospital for a bad reaction. Electrical short circuit in the heart. I'm starting to think now that i may have heart failure because of this drug. After some digging found out is one of the listed side effects. My doctor hasn't been any help in getting off. She is a GP but doesn't seem to know anything about coming off of the drug. Eventually i got down to 5mg per dose. Went smaller but it has been inconsistent since pill cutters aren't that accurate. Went to see if she knew of a way to have reliable doses and... "I don't know". Is what she said. Months later i found out that compounding pharmacies exist. Something she never mentioned. So 2 weeks ago i changed the 3rd dose to a compounded 4mg of propranolol HCL. (3rd dose was already close to the range of 4mg) 2 days ago, i switched the middle dose to 3mg compounded. (before was around 3.2-4mg) Will ride this out for 2 weeks. Morning dose is at about 4.2-4.7mg right now(again, pill cutters aren't accurate) but will be switching that to 4mg after the middle dose has gone 2 weeks and see what happens. Once at 4-3-4 will take the night dose down to 3. I think that one will be difficult 25% reduction. Then the first dose. From there i'll see if the compounding pharmacy can do 2.5. 6 weeks to get all doses on that. then 2mg. 1.5mg. 1mg. With 6 weeks for each step / 2 weeks for each dosage reduction.

Some may think these are low doses but that is not the case. It depends on body chemistry. These "low" doses are still very powerful and effective. As we speak the veins in my hands and throughout my body are extremely thin and small. 5x less their previous size when not on propranolol. This does not change with physical exertion.

Really stuck between a rock and a hard place here. If i remain on propranolol further heart failure, if that is the case. But if i come off i wonder what would happen in the case of a panic attack. A heart weakened by propranolol for 4-5 years suddenly going 250-300BPM... It's worrisome.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned CoQ10. Propranolol depletes the body of this enzyme. Further study is needed to see if it could be used while taking propranolol but i have heard that others have used it to help come off yet none of them outlined how. (in what doses, frequency in relation to propranolol)

Have also heard talk of amino acids but it's unclear if L-citrulline / L-Arginine, L-Taurine, L-carnitine, would conflict with the beat blocker or not. I must study further. For the effects i am experiencing from this drug. Nobody explains what it has done for them during the weaning process or what those do in the body in relation to propranolol. Most people just say "I used *this* and it helped" with no dosage or frequency details. No details on *how* it helped or possible bad interactions :(

When it comes to L-citrulline / L-Arginine i read that it increases nitric oxide in the body and relaxes your blood muscles. gives you "more energy" which means adrenal gland stimulation. Which is the activity the BB blocks. Isn't that a contradiction? When you get "more energy" wouldn't the BB over compensate to shut it down?

I have taken Propranolol for over twenty years for essential tremors. The dose has been up and down over the years, 80mg has been the most recent one two times a day. This doesn't seem to help much with my tremors. I have to work. I am now 77 years old and cannot write or speak clearly, which I must use both on the job. My heart has stopped three times and have had to be brought back, that is why the up and down doses. A week ago was the last time for my heart to stop; my step son gave me CPR and brought me back, I was taken to Er, no heart checked except for the ekg and was sent home to see my primary physician. She was disturbed that they have never checked my neurological condition or heart over the years so that is what she is starting to do now. I am off of the Propranolol now as this she believes lowers my blood pressure and stops my heart. It has been now a week since I have taken a pill, my tremors are back big time, so we are now starting me on the CBD and that has helped some, but too soon to tell what it will do for the essential tremors. I have a family history of this condition, my mother had only the head shaking, grandmother was both head and hands which I have. It is embarrassing to try to go out to eat, have to have my head in my plate to reach my mouth at times with the shaking so hard. I have had no strange side-effect by the sudden stopping of the drug. I was told not to stop too quickly, but I did and started the CBD. You are welcome to write me back.

I just recently completely stopped taking Propranolol and for years and years I tried to stop, but couldn't because I would feel too much anxiety without it. I found that ever since I started doing a daily yoga practice, it has practically healed my anxiety and I no longer require any medication whatsoever. I started doing yoga every single day 39 days ago and it has changed my life. I do it at home with the help of "Yoga with Adriene" on Youtube. She has a few different 30 day challenges and it is the best thing I have ever done for my chronic anxiety and obviously the side effects for my body have been amazing! If anyone is struggling to get healthy mentally and physically, PLEASE TRY YOGA!!!

You’re the First person to mention dizziness. I’ve been on propanolol for over a year now, and I’m trying to come off it. I’m trying to taper by taking only one every other day as opposed to one per day large dose in this morning I’m extremely dizzy.
