Clarithromyacin Withdrawal Effects
UpdatedRecently I have taken Clarithromyacin as part of a two week treatment along with Amoxicillian and Lanzoprazole to try to cure H Pylori. I also take Phenobarbitone and Phenytoin to control my Epilepsy which has been successful for over 37 years. However since completing the course of Clarithromyacin etc last week I have experienced nerve spasms and some slight muscle twitches. The patient leaflet informs you that in very rare cases while taking the drug convuslions may occur but it does not state whether or not there are any known side effects once the drug is no longer taken. Is ther any information or related experience data available
Thanks

I was diagnosed with h pilory, I took the same medication, my h pilory returned and Im having muscle spasms as well. While it is not certain that the Clarithromicyn is the culprit in the muscle spasms..I did find an article that suggest that proton inhibitors may cause your stomach to produce less acid, meaning your stomach could possibly not absorb Vitamin B 12 which can lead to muscle spasms. I really dont know.
It usually takes a couple days for your body to fully process a medication, so yes, you can still have some side effects for a bit, even after you've stopped taking it.
However, it is always best to consult your doctor to be sure that there is nothing else going on and causing your symptoms.
The FDA lists the typical side effects of Clarithromycin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea.

How are you both doing, now?
