So I went to the doctor because I had flu like symptoms and a very sore throat with minor headaches. Doctor prescribed me cipro and prednisone. 2 500mg tabs/day for 10 days and prednisone 10mg tabs. 7 the first day, 6 the second, etc, etc. and 1 on the 7th day. Am I crazy or is this prescription very risky??

Hello, Richard! How are you? I'm sorry that you've been ill.

What seems risky about it?

Ciprofloxacin is classified by the FDA as an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

Prednisone is a steroid that's used to treat inflammation, which can occur with infections. Starting at a high dose and gradually tapering is normal, but not really necessary for such a short prescription. Its typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, insomnia and acne.

You are not supposed to take cipro and prednisone together. Look it up online they are a very dangerous combination and shouldn't be taken together. It says so on the warning label inside of the medication as well. Look up being floxed or cipro poisoning. I got very sick for 5 months just from cipro and no prednisone. It can cause an Achilles tendon rupture among other things.

Why do Dr.s still prescribe Cipro and Prednisone why it is known to be dangerous. I have pneumonia and am on Cipro for 5 days. I am not going to take Prednisone for fear of more serious side effect. I am also on other major drugs for RA, Mac, COPD etc.
