My mother is 97 years old and has been an invalid for several years. She has never had a heart attack but has taken heart meds for congestive heart failure for many years. She has never had a major stroke. Several months ago her primary care physician recommended that she be taken off of all of her life sustaining medications such as blood pressure meds, etc. My family made the decision to do this as it was what she wanted (she only has very mild dementia). In your opinion why would she still be on Isosorbide MN? Is this something that will just make her comfortable or is it considered life sustaining? Thank you for you help.

Isosorbide is most commonly used to treat angina, though a doctor may prescribe it for other cardiac conditions.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, low blood pressure, and lowered heart rate.

If she has dementia, who is actually making these decisions? There is a concern that she might not be in the right frame of mind, when making them.

I am not accusing anyone of anything, I just want to be sure of what's going on. When my father was diagnosed with lung cancer, he refused traditional treatments, but he did try an experimental medication. While he didn't have dementia, it didn't really extend his life for long, only a few months. But he had signed the papers for a DNR, (do not resuscitate.) We children don't always like having to follow such directives, but I had to tell my brother that it was our dad's choice to make.
