Can My Cardiologist Prescribe Xanax

I had a cardiac ablation in 2014. Had three episodes since then. My cardiologist prescribed Xanax. When I feel as if I might be going to have an episode, I take 1/4 th extra of 25 mg metoprolol along with 1 Xanax. It has been successful in staving off any episodes.
I haven't used that many. When I tried filling my script, it had expired. His new practitioner is telling me, my cardiologist can legally only prescribe Xanax just once in MA. Is this true?

There seems to be a lot of very strict rules in MA when it comes to controlled medicine but no that doesn't sound right. Many Doctors have said similar comments like that for years, making it clear they will only fill your request once and further refills will need to be provided by a Mental Health provider. I think that is BS

I could not find any laws in Mass stating that restriction. It is up to each doctor to decide what they prescribe. You need to see your cardiologist and ask him directly. If he says the same thing, that means he does not want to continue to prescribe it to you.

It is common for cardiologists to prescribe medicatioins for anxiety. If the cardiologist or any other doctor believes a patient requires the help of a psychiatrist when mental health issues are involved they will usually refer the patient to a psychiatrist.

No, any doctor that is legally licensed to prescribe medications can prescribe it, whether or not they chose to do so is entirely up to them. My cardiology ARNP used to prescribe Ativan for me, after I suffer congestive heart failure, until my anxiety and insomnia issues were under control.

The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, and irritability.

Otherwise, I have to refer to what BL has said. They may not think it is something you continue to need, or they may think you are better served by seeing some that handles mental health issues.

Are these the only medications that you are currently taking?
