Bruising, Same Efficacy, Less Bleeding

Updated

Have been on xarelto 20mg for over 6 years after 3 unexplained PE's. at 72, the bruising is increasing and asked my Doc for advice. He switched me to Xarelto 10mg. Any experience with 10mg? He indicated "less bleeding" and "same efficacy". My first thought was, if true, why wouldn't everyone be on 10mg?

Hello, Alan! How are you?

I understand what you're asking, and it's kind of hard to explain, but I'll try my best.....

When it comes to medications, efficacy, and potency, are two different things. Efficacy is related to how well a medication works, it is not dependent upon the amount taken, generally the efficacy rate remains constant from one dosage to the next. So yes, a 10mg, and a 20mg dosage of the same medication have relatively the same level of efficacy. They have all tested to work, for the relevant condition(s), in most people that take them.

Potency, however, is dependent upon how much is taken, so a higher dose is more potent than a lower dose. You will still have some clot prevention, and blood thinning at 10mgs, but not as much as you had at 20mgs.

Think of it as being similar to having a few glasses of beer, the alcohol amount per volume remains the same, in each glass, that is its efficacy. However, multiple glasses has more of an effect, so that is its potency.

Have you experienced any of the other Xarelto side effects, such as headache, nausea, or dizziness?

Re: VerFree (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

Thank you so much! Makes perfect sense....my phamacist did not know the difference just like me! I am having no symptoms of side effects. The rationale from my clot doc was due to me saying bruising on my hands and arms had gotten far worse. He stated "you have had no problems for over 6 years, soI think it is ok to put you on 10mg". That message was thru his assistant and I was unable to ask questions. Based on your response, I'll hope for less bruising and not worry about the rest!
