HI, I'm taking amitriptyline for interstitial cystitis and have recently been diagnised with under active thyroid so am on Levothyroxine 50mg per night. My bladder is really playing up and I'm wondering if these tablets don't work well together? Has anyone experienced this. I don't know whether I've an infection or just need to increase my amitriptyline because its a flare up. Help please!

The only interaction listed is that the Levothyroxine can actually make the Amitriptyline work better and some doctors have used it, therapeutically, to do so.

All medications can affect people different, though, and this site is not medical professionals to pinpoint your problem.

Have you spoken to your doctor about it, yet?

I also have IC. Be leary of anitdepressants. I tried Lexapro prior and it caused a major painful flare up of IC. I had to stop taking it after 3 weeks. I am now on day 2 of using amitriptyline and I am already experiencing signs of flare up again. I find the "urinary retention" side effects of certain antidepressants may be the culprit. Surprisingly alot of doctors are not familiar with this situation....you may want to consult a urologist who has alot of experience with IC.

I hope you know this already, Amitriptyline is to be used with caution in people who have thyroid problems, either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, and in people with a history of difficulty passing urine. Here is a link with the information. Look under "Use with caution in:"

netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100000107.html

P.S.: Also one of the side effects is "difficulty in passing urine"
