Amitiza Coverage Denied?

Updated

I have Fibro with chronic IBS-C...my doctor gave me rx for Amitiza, but my insurance does not want to cover it for me..I was on the Zelnorm for many years which worked SO well for me,but of course it was pulled from the market by FDA. Can anyone give me some guidance in maybe a company program that will help cover the costs or if you have Anthem Rx Part D should I just see if they will allow a formulary exception? Also I need to know if anyone has had good results with this for their constipation problems? I just had gallbladder removal suregery about a month ago and everyone I spoke with told me I would be having problems with chronic diarrea, but unfortunately my IBS-C seems to have worsened. I truly need HELP..am 44 and miserable enough with all my chronic pain issues (not just Fibro) and this pain is worsening even tho I'm intaking a LOT of water and lots of fresh fruits and fiber. Thanks!

Hello, Butterfli! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having.

I've done some searching, but all of the current programs for Amitiza require that you not have any type of insurance to qualify for them. Thus, I think the best thing to do would be to see if they will allow a formulary exception.

Amitiza is used to alleviate the symptoms of IBS-C and may cause side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, headache and abdominal distention.

As to the Linzess, the posts on it have been very mixed, about half of those who tried it said it worked well and the other half got no results.

Does anyone else have any advice or ideas to offer?

I have suffered from chronic idiopathic constipation my whole life and when I discovered Ametiza it was life changing. The low dose did not work for me but the highest dose was like magic. With it the bloat disappeared and the gas was under control- I was able to have a natural BM every 2-3 days- something that had never happened before. After 6 months my insurance denied coverage and offered lactulose or Linzess so I tried the Linzess. I am now bloated and miserable again because I am unable to take this med. Explosive and uncontrollable water diarrhea! Crazy. Now back to square one which consists of Senna Tea and"Colon Helper" supplement. Still bloated, gassy and constipated:(

Re: Verwon (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

I'm on Methadone Maintenance and my doctor gave me samples of amtiza.. I took the first dose and nothing happrned, well After my second dose I was able to go. It hurt because I hadn't gone in over a week but non the less I am a happy camper . I called his office today and he's calling the pharmacy for me. For people on opioid the dose is higher 24mcg twice a day. This medication is my new best friend. I need to ask the pharmacist if I'm supposed to take it everyday or just as needed

Re: Verwon (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

IT works for me but not overnight. It hasnt been studied for people on methadone Maintenance, so I was concerned especially after it cost me $89 with my insurance co-pay. I took it for 3 days before it finally worked, but it did since a month earlier I got constipated so bad I ended up in the ER. It hurts having to pay the $89 every month but its worth it.
