Altosec is a foreign brand name for Omeprazole, commonly sold in the U.S. under the brand name Prilosec.
This is used to prevent heartburn and gastro-esophagal reflux.
The most common side effects include headache, nausea and other conditions.

I have been taking altosec 20 for about 7 months, I had my gall bladder out and then I had reflux, I had those scopes and was put onto Altosec 20. I feel that reflux was caused by the op and now I would like to stop taking Altosec 20. Do I have to wean myself off this capsule?

To James and Naomi - According to the page for Omeprazole Details, "some of the most frequent side effects of omeprazole (experienced by over 1% of those taking the drug) are headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, trouble awakening and sleep deprivation, although in clinical trials the incidence of these effects with omeprazole was mostly comparable to that found with placebo. Other side effects may include iron and vitamin B12 deficiency, although there is very little evidence to support this." .... "Omeprazole ... may interact with drugs that depend on them for metabolism, such as diazepam, escitalopram, and warfarin; ... Drugs that depend on stomach pH for absorption may interact with omeprazole; drugs that depend on an acidic environment (such as ketoconazole or atazanavir) will be poorly absorbed, whereas acid-labile antibiotics (such as erythromycin) will be absorbed to a greater extent than normal due to the more alkaline environment of the stomach."
If you are thinking of taking other medications with Omeprazole then please double check with your doctor.

"Stopping Heartburn Medicines Pose Challenge
Medications such as Aciphex, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec and Protonix are best sellers in the pharmacy. They are known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These drugs are very helpful for healing ulcers and can also ease symptoms of serious heartburn (acid reflux).
The body, however, seems to think that acid in the stomach is a good idea. Just as the blood vessels in your nose dilate after repeated use of a vasoconstrictor, so too the cells in your stomach lining work extra hard to make acid when repeatedly exposed to one of these powerful medications.
If a PPI is discontinued abruptly, acid-making cells go into overdrive, sometimes for weeks or months. Rebound acid production is a lot like rebound congestion. The resulting discomfort makes it hard not to start using the medication again.

There is very little information about how to stop taking PPIs. Some doctors suggest gradual dose tapering and using weaker drugs such as Tagamet, Pepcid or Zantac during the transition.

I have been on Altosec 20mg daily for 3years agter my gallbladder was removed and if i forget to take them i get heartburn with the worst gastro reflux,palpitations is not harmful i also get a few sometimes!I wont go off altosec,its a great help for acid in my stomach!!

I have reflux since baby. I never did endoscopy. The reflux I have is not acid. Now 36 years old, I sometimes feel dizzy, knees cracking, myopia, constipation, white tongue, sometimes with metallic taste in the mouth, shortness of breath and panic. In blood tests, urine does not detect anything. I x-rayed my stomach with a white potato. I am taking altosec 20 mg recommended by the doctor for 6 months. I'm worried because when I comb my hair I fall. What will it be?
