Allergic Reaction To Naltrexone

Updated

Hi, I am trying to understand the differences between Naloxone and Naltrexone because I was prescribed Naltrexone tablets over the summer and had a severe allergic reaction and had to be hospitalized. I do not know if the Naloxone in Suboxone would give the same reaction, but I do not want to find out. If anyone can explain this to me, I would greatly appreciate it. =)

Hello, Kkbc! How are you?

While they both do the same thing, they are two different substances. So, while you may have had a reaction to the Naltrexone, you might be okay with the Naloxone, but there is also a slight chance that you could have a reaction to it, too.

Typical side effects to Naloxone may include nausea, change in mood, increased sweating and nervousness.

If you do have a problem with it, Subutex is always an option you can discuss with your doctor, since it doesn't contain the Naloxone, just the Buprenorphine.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Thank you. I was wondering because I was going to go see a doctor here in WV but since people abuse and sell the one without the naloxetene most drs will not prescribe it and I do not want to end up in the hospital again. I was given the Naltrexone 10days after any opiates and it was a small mg/half a pill. The reactions started within 25mins and I was at the ER in about 40mins with terrible stomache pain and burning skin. I tried the medication in hopes of abstinence and when i could not take it and was in pain for days after the reaction i started opiates again. I am just reluctant to go see a doctor that I have never been to before and it happen again, because I am officially terrified of Naltrexone lol.

Oh, after going through that, I don't blame you, at all.

I had a bad reaction to Bactrim and it terrifies me, as well. I will not ever take it, again.

And yes, most will likely want you to at least try Suboxone, first. Then switch if you have a bad reaction to the Naloxone, as well. There's really just not anyway around it, I'm afraid.
