Zoloft Brain Tours

Updated

I am on 200 mg per day and it has been an excellent solution for me. I was experiencing severe anxiety attacks due to a life situation, it eliminated that. 2 sides effects: decreased libido and tremors.

One fascinating effect: I call them "brain tours". They happen when sleeping at night or dozing in the chair. My body will be absolutely asleep but my brain is 100% awake and alert. I can hear other people' s conversations and remember them, I confirmed it the next day. One night I made up a nonsense word during a tour, I thought if it was a dream I'd forget the word because I forget dreams. I still know the word, flibberpeanut. During tours i cannot move my body, like in REM sleep.

The first few times it scared me but now it is fascinating. I use these tours to explore thoughts, think about current events, etc. I have no idea how long they last, but they are not short. I am learning how to wake my body up during the tour, but it is hard and actually induces anxiety.

I am not crazy I have tested this several times. Anyone else have similar experiences?

Hello, Nhky! How are you?

This type of vivid and alert dreaming is caused by REM Onset Latency, it is a side effect of most antidepressant drugs. You spend more time in the early stages of sleep, which is likely when you were able to overhear and remember that conversation and it takes longer for you to enter into the REM stage, you spend less time in it and dreams typically become more vivid and may be more readily recalled than usual.

If the Zoloft is causing tremors, you need to speak to your doctor, because that could be the sign of a problematic side effect and you may need to switch to a different medication.

Are there any other questions or concerns?

OK time for an update, if anyone is following. I have been on Z now for a while, and it really helped. I had probably every side effect you can imagine (altered sense of taste and smell, tremors, inability to have s**, brain tours (see above), etc. etc. etc. But they all went away except the s** and the tremors. And all in all it was worth it. It worked. Give it a lot of time (3 weeks in my case before I noticed any improvement). My life situation is getting better, and I am trying to wean myself. I am down to 50mg every morning and 50 mg every other evening. I have to admit, quitting is hard. I am actually a little worried about how hard it is. But I intend to "keep quitting". Stay with it if you can, it worked wonders for me.
