If anyone else experienced these symptoms, how long after being off the xarelto did symptoms go away?

According to the US National Library of Medicine, all of the side effects you mentioned are typical of Xarelto (Rivaroxaban).

They actually list "back pain" as one of the more common side effects patients experience, along with "arm/leg pain" being less common. It also goes on to list "joint or muscle pain", but declares it under a category called "incidence not known".

Ref: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0045374/#DDIC603481.side_effects_section

From my perspective, I'd say the severity of these symptoms could potentially outweigh the benefits of the medication itself. Have you had a chance to sit down with your doctor and go over any of this yet?

I have discussed the back pain and hip and shoulder pain with my primary doctor and my hematologist. I take Xarelto due to clots in my left leg post surgery. I also had a stroke back in 2009. The joint and muscle aches began a week after starting this drug. When I mention Xarelto being the cause of this pain, both my primary doctor and my hematologist brushed it off as my imagination. I know it's the Xarelto because I was taking it from the summer into the late fall 2014. When I stopped, the joint and muscle pain ceased. Now that I'm back on it due to a new and larger clot, the pains have started again.

I read your post. I am taking Xarelto & I have severe arthritis with horrible pain in my left hip & now my knee. Prior to taking this medication I had onset arthritis. Now I have severe. I am sure it has something to do with this medication. My doctor says no. I am going to do more research on this. I did not like what I read about this medication prior to taking it...but my doctor said it is safe. My pharmacist said it has several side effects & also did not think I should take this medication. I feel like I am caught between a rock & a hard place. I am so sure my New Hip Pain & Knee Pain are related to Xarelto! I go back to my doctor in April, I am going to ask to be taken off the Xarelto & try something else. Good Luck to you!

I normally have excruciating sacroiliac joint pain. I had a bilateral sacroiliac joint surgery that failed. Now I have a blood clot in the calve of my right leg. Ever since I started Xarelto, my pain has increased ten-fold. I, also, am having acute muscle pain in my upper back. I take 20mgs per day. I am miserable. I see a new primary doctor tomorrow. I hope that he will switch me to some other kind of blood thinner, one that does not create muscle or back pain.

JES- I had a knee replacement in 11/14 and was put on Xaralto after a pulmonary embolism. The first month ok, into the second month, I developed joint pain and then severe muscle pain. I discontinued the Xaralto and it took about three months for the pain to subside. I now give myself a shot daily of Fondaparimux (injectible blood thinner), and other than the crummy shot, there is no more pain. I had also tried Warfarin, and that cause similar joint pain. Press your doctor to change your meds.

Since I had so much pain with Xarelto, I was put on Eliquis. At first, no problems. Then, by the end of the 2nd week, the same joint pains started. I have had 2 knee replacements and neither knee hurt afterwards until I started on Xarelto and now Eliquis. So my knees are back hurting again. It's been 2 years and when I go out I still use my cane, but not around my home. Xarelto and Eliquis...both cause joint pain.

I am a 49yr old female That had a DVT that caused two lateral PE. I was put on xarelto and by the 3rd week I too started with the back pain first then the hip joint pain came by the 2nd month. When I sit for a period of time it is so hard to get up and moving. I just cant figure out how a blood thinner can do all these different side effects its maddening!

I have the same response to all the tableted blood thinners and all tableted meds so I wonder if the muscle pain could be an allergy to inactive ingredients?

I have been on Xarelto for 4 months now for a blood clot caused by a nurse who blew out my vein in an ER. I know my back pain is caused by the Xarelto, but what I need to know is how long it's going to take for it to go away after I'm off of them? I still have 3 days left of the pills, so I really want to know when I can look forward to my back not hurting? Sometimes it's like labor pains... Someone please answer me.

I have had severe back and joint pain since taking xarelto. Tylenol is worthless. What do I do? This pain is so bad I cannot sleep, I cannot play golf. It hurts to walk and I used to walk 10 miles a day. My doctor pooh poohs it.

My husband has been on xarelto for A-fib for 8 months now. He can hardly walk, has terrible joint and leg pain & he doesn't want to have another stroke, but the leg and back pain are too much... What can we do? He is going for steroid shots... desperate.

Does anyone have acute and chronic back pain while taking Xarelto?

Can Xarelto be titrated?

Can you switch to Eliquis?

Does anyone who is on Xarelto suffer bad headaches and dizziness? I was really well before these clots apart from the dry cough. Some say it doesn’t cause a cough but I read more about it it does cause a cough. But the headaches and dizziness are getting more troublesome I don’t feel safe to drive any more. Should I cancel my dental appointment on Monday for a filling, but if they find it too big a hole they might have to take it out,and the bleeding worries me.

After reading all these side effects I didn’t mention my leg pains, I had a knee replacement 5 years ago with no problems at all until I started on Xarelto. Something has to be done to stop these side effects going on forever. Both my knees are painful. I cannot get up from a sitting position without much pain.

I developed muscle pain in my legs after taking Xarelto. Has anyone ever just stopped taking this med? I think I won’t take it tonight. I called my cardiologist to report my symptoms. Maybe Coumadin has less severe side effects... Anyone know?

Yes I've tried xarelto, twice, both times experiencing muscle/nerve pain. The Drs say it is just a trial process, so I've trialed all the anticoagulants. For me they seem to be fine for a while and then the pain begins. As I have posted before, I believe there is an allergic component for me. As I have experienced clots three times in the last decade, Drs keep me in fear mode when not on meds, but the meds make me hurt bad enough, its just not worth it. Trying to get testing for med allergies at this time.

Hi. I’m back and I’m experiencing more side effects of Xarelto. The headaches & dizziness have gone away for now!! But my knees are still hurting especially when I try to get up. The latest I’m experiencing is stomach problems. Makes me terribly depressed. I have burping, bloated stomach and I feel fat, the weight I have put on is unbelieavable. I climbed my first steps this week and I was worried i would not be able to breath like I did the first time I had the clots in my lungs. I could breathe but had a tight feeling in my chest. I’m tearful, depressed and have feelings of despair. My family tries to keep me positive, but I’m not hopeful of it getting better soon. I’m going to see my GP after the new year. I hope I will not break out in tears which is often these days. There must be another way to deal with these clots... What about coated aspirin?

Re: Gina (# 16) Expand Referenced Message

You just cannot stop these tablets as you like, please check with your GP. Otherwise you could feel worse.
What about the injections for blood thinners ,ask your GP. If you read through these comments someone did that and they found it OK painwise.

Re: Anne (# 3) Expand Referenced Message

Do research into Xarelto and find out what you can, maybe call the company issuing it. You could try Eliquis instead, it might work better for You. I've been on it for a year (2.5 mg 2 x a day) and find there are some side effects but all drugs have them. Eliquis is quite expensive, even with medicare coverage, because there is no generic for it yet, it was FDA approved in 2012 and quite new.

Hi. I have been on low dose aspirin for three months now; the previous six months I was on Xarelto, the CT scan showed the clots had gone from my lungs. I have been back to my GP on various occasions because I’m feeling my breathing is a bit tight. He has given me a referral to get another Ct scan, he doesn’t think the clots are back but just to make sure,
I know anxiety cause a lot of problems. I do have a muscle pain on my right side from my waist up. I can walk and sit, ok it’s the sleeping on my side that is the worse, I was gardening this week and did I hurt, my back was agony.

I am still on aspirin and will be forever, I’m trying to relax as much as I can. If the scan shows I need to go on blood thinners I will not go on Xarelto, or the other one. My friend has been prescribed one for DVT in her leg and A-FIB the specialist has prescribed one I haven’t heard of before. I did write here to ask about it but got no reply.

Yes, you can get pains in your joints as well as muscle pain, dizziness. And stress.

Pradaxa is another blood thinner I heard about today with antidote if you bleed. Why isn’t this medication used and not Xarelto? There doesn’t seem to be side effects with this one reading people who are on it. My friend has been prescribed this this week for AF and a clot in her thigh. I have been on aspirin now for a few weeks. I was taken off Xarelto because my PE was clear of clots after 6 months on Xarelto. If I need to go back on blood thinners if these clots return would Pradaxa do the same as Xarelto without the side effects of others?

Re: Nigel (# 39) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Nigel, I didn’t have a back pain from Xarelto, it’s now I’m having problems since being on Aspirin. Muscle problems, my main problem now is feeling light headed, I’m on 100mg cartia Aspirin, and BP medication.
I have been off Xarelto about 8months now, I do have osteoathritis that is present now, I saw my Haematologist today, and she wants me to stay on Aspirin, but if any more clots in my lungs I will have to go back on Xarelto, She said to take panadol, that is only pain killers I can take because of aspirin. Everyone is different, give your back time, see a physio, they would be your best bet, Every day is different, some days it’s hard to get up from a sitting position, once I’m on my feet I’m ok, I won’t be seeing the Haematologist again just my GP. She also said the de diner is not used anymore for checking the clots mine last time taken was .5 down from 5.3, it should be under 5.

I was on xarelto for 1 month and stopped due to intense pain in the groin area. The dr doesn’t believe xarelto is the cause and asked me to go back on it and see after one week how I’m doing. The groin pain is slowly returning along with lightning pain in my right calf while sleeping at night.

Re: Hefina (# 36) Expand Referenced Message

Hi, I was on Xarelto for 4 months due to DVT in right leg. The back pain (which is listed as a side effect in the information leaflet in the box) started within a month. I have been off Xarelto for a month now but no change in back pain. Anti inflammatory meds have no effect. Hot and cold treatment is temporary. I wonder how long does the pain continue?

Google new fda rulings on xarelto maintenance dosages on the internet. Xarelto isn't perfect, but it is the best drug in its class......Talk to your doctor and find out if 10mg a day works for you......Best of luck.

Re: SPARKY (# 27) Expand Referenced Message

Sparky, thank you for your suggestion. I had an aneurysm in my shoulder which threw clots into both of my arteries in my right arm. Almost lost the arm. Took a 71/2 hour surgery removal of muscle in neck, and two ribs to fix. I am sooooo afraid of going off this med, but I also have cerebellum brain damage and fall, alot. I am also scared of the bleed factor on this med. I was considering asking to stop the med, after one year and issues resolved, but maybe I will take your suggestion and ask for a reduction instead. My circulation in right arm is very poor due to damage done by the clots. It was a very painful condition I would hate to revisit. I think reducing mgs may be the ticket. May reduce the bleed threat and ensure I don't developed another clot. That would be win, win. Yep. Gonna see vascular surgeon about that. Thanks Sparky. JMJ

Re: Annette (# 30) Expand Referenced Message

Yes I have about two weeks now, I have more pain now in my knees and hip area than when I was on them. I feel every day is different, good one day not so good another. The clots had all gone, I did ask the dr the other day should I go back on Xarelto, he said not because if I fell I could get a bleed on my brain. Otherwise I have to stay on Cartia Aspirin. I also read that it takes up to two years before recovering from a PE. Every day I wish i was back to normal. Who knows every day brings it closer to feeling well again. Thanks Annette for asking about how I feel.
