Why Is Chantix Not Working Faster For Me?

Updated

I'm almost finished with my 3rd week of pills and still need a couple of cigs a day. They do not smell or taste bad to me at all. I've read where many people are totally free in just days....am I just a slow learner!!

I am using Chantix to stop using smokeless tobacco (snuff). I just started week 4 and still dip the same. My cravings are the same. The first three weeks on Chantix I would take one pill when I woke up and one later in the evening. Because I work 3pm to 3am, the times would always vary. So now I decided to take one at noon, and one at midnight. I don't know if this will make a difference or not. I hope so. Anyone else have a severly delayed reaction to Chantix, or has anyone used it for snuff?

On day 7 (my quit day) and I am still smoking. I am experiencing nausea but can wipe that out immediatly with Emetrol. I still smoke the same amount and beside the obvious reasons to quit, im not really feeling the urge to completely put them down!

This is my third time using Chantix. The first time it worked perfect - quit on the seventh day (for nine months). These last two times, it's like chantix doesn't have that same intense "I don't want a cigarette" feeling. I still crave, but have reduced to one pack per day. The cigs taste bad, but apparently not bad enough. Not sure what to do. Would be curious if the person who went up to three times per day had any luck.

I've been using Chantex for almost 2 weeks now, I have cut back a little, but I've decided to try it three times a day and see what happens

I have the same effect. The first time I used it, it worked perfectly for 9 months. Then I made the mistake of having ONE cigarette and the addiction took over again. I suspect (just a theory) that it only works the first and perhaps the "pleasure center" of the brain (where Chantix does it's work) becomes immune to further use of chantix. I hope I'm wrong as I'm about to try again with Chantix. Good luck to you and everyone else.

I have been on Chantix for almost 2 weeks. I went from a pack per day to just a few puffs today. The cigs taste HORRIBLE, which is good. A big part for me is that "mental obsession". I'm also trying to change my routine, especially morning, by cutting way back on caffeine. I no longer walk straight outside to smoke, I eat breakfast first and then shower. Overall, Chantix is working, but I know from repeated attempts to quit smoking that I have to do my part.

That's great - That's how it was for me the first time.

I was just prescribed Chantix today. Had a LONG talk with my doctor before deciding. He actually recommended to make my QUIT date in two weeks rather than one week. He said in most cases that he has seen that it take 2-3 weeks to build up in your system. He also made is very clear this is not a magic pill. "Don't expect the craving to totally disappear even after your quit date. This is a 12 week program and it's only an aid...." I made a new thread though as well about starting day one -three at night as opposed the morning.

I will have finished my 3rd week tonight and I don't feel like this is doing anything at all. I take them just as prescibed- twice a day, but nothing. No urge to not smoke. Yesterday was bad. I smoked like 2 packs of cigarettes! Help!!!!!

I will be starting my third week and no change yet, this will be my second time to try chantix with five years apart, have started to wonder if my body wont respond to it again as it did then which made me HATE to smoke. Hope it works again this time..

Be patient. You didn't become addicted overnight, everyone is different. It took me 3 months of taking it CORRECTLY before I saw results.

Today is my quit day. First time on Chantix. My only side affect has been nausea. Bad nausea! Dreams were not bad, just silly. However, i am not ready to stop today. I have cut my smoking in half after 43years in this past days, so I am more than proud of myself. i refuse to feel like aloser cause i didnt quit when they say to. My body will do it when it is ready. EAch day I dislike the taste and smell more. Each day i dont have the urge i used to have. Just one less urge each day means one less cigarette! If it takes 2 weeks instead of one. So what!. Im hanging in there and I hope all of you do too. good luck to all of us. DONT GIVE UP!!.......

I'm on day 4 with my pack. I haven't really felt any differently about cigarettes, I can't quit smoking them it seems. I mean, I usually smoke a pack a day..so now I have made one pack last two days. That was me being aware I'm trying to quit, though. Ugh. I hope it starts working soon.

I wish i had a good note to write but I dont. I stayed on course for 3 weeks. suffered alot of nausea that only a prescription would help. I reached a point after 2 weeks where cigs tasted bad but not bad enough. On the 4th week, the real problems started. Heart pounding, anxiety attacks, panicky feelings. I had to stop taking Chantix completely. It felt like that ride up the first hill of a roller coaster, i was full of hope, but then i teetered at the top for a few days, then it was a plunge into a bad depression and panic attacks. Now im still smoking and have to see a Pdoc to get anti anxiety and depression meds. With this said, these are all side affects of Chantix for SOME people, and I stress "some". Unfortunately for me i was one of those. I have and I know people who took it, it worked, and they are still smoke free today. I hope for all of you who are trying, that it works. Unless you feel the side affects that I did, stay on it, keep the FAITH!!... You just might be one of the winners!

Going on 4 weeks now. Was nauseated somewhat for a few days and it passed. Can't say the desire to quit has left. Still need to smoke but don't want to. I've tried EVERY product out there to try to quit but to no avail...Chantix is my last option. What am I doing wrong?

That's what I want to try as well. This is my second try at quitting with Chantix. The first time was last year and I was under a lot of stress. I had bad mood changes and some depression (minimal). So I'm trying again but I'm on week 6 and I still have my AM, drive from work, and evening smoke and one or two more, but significantly down in consumption!! I just want someone to say it is safe to take 1 mg x 3 per day. Or even .50mg and two 1mg.

I am on day 9 and still don't have the urge to quit. I just have to be patient. I'm only smoking about 3 a day or I take a couple puffs here and there because of the craving.
You also have to have a lot of will power. I have had dreams and have had a hard time sleeping. Hopefully this will all change soon. My husband got pneumonia last year, so he's been smoke free for a year!! Good luck to everyone, and don't give up!!!

Re: Ana (# 38) Expand Referenced Message

Thanks for that response. I'm googling before calling in a refill for Chantix. I've smoked for about 38 years, on Chantix for 6 months after a month of Wellbutrin doing nothing to help. This has probably been the most stressful past year for me, lots of deaths of loved ones. I have cut back without trying, I checked when I am buying my cartons & that pretty quickly went from every 7 days to every 10 days, but that has plateaued. I don't know if I should keep taking it. Dr. said at checkup that it would probably take me longer because of how long I've smoked & all the stress.

Re: Kris (# 16) Expand Referenced Message

I have been on it for 2 months. I had all those crazy heart pounding, anxiety, depression, and very bad mood swings, oh and constipation and gas. I kept telling myself to hang in there. I don’t want the urge. I will take a 5 month course. The mental stuff is getting better. Just trying to stay busy and making goals.

Re: Patricia (# 48) Expand Referenced Message

Oct 11th will be 1 year for me.. it's not a miracle drug. It just helps with the urge and edginess.. you have to set a day to stop smoking. I took chantix for 3 months.

I'm glad I'm not the only one going through this. I'm on my third week as well and still smoke pretty much the same amount.

It's not the miracle drug everyone thinks it is. I took chantix for 3 months. I stopped smoking on Oct 11th. So I've been smoke free for a little over 3 months. I thought the same as you. Was waiting for my mind to tell me "NO MORE SMOKING". It doesn't do that. It helped with the edginess. I did dream a lot but not scary dreams. Some were weird and very strange. I think even though I was dreaming a lot. I was resting. Since I'm not taking it now. I'm not resting as well. Today I'm struggling. Wanting a cigarette. But Not going to do it. So you have to really want to stop smoking. Like I said it's not the miracle drug everyone thinks it is...It doesn't magically make you stop.

I am on day 10 of Chantix with absolutely no LESS desire to smoke and have not even cut back. Is it possible that this so called miracle drug doesn't work for everyone?? The only thing these have done for me is make me feel like I am walking around in a foggy and depressed mental state How long should I continue to wait to see if something kicks in or should I try something else??
