Why Doesn't This Work For My Pain?-hydrocodone Acetaminophen 5 325

Updated

I had a total shoulder replacement and my doctor gave me Percocet to go home with. They immediately took the pain away for about 4-5 hours. Now she has given me Vicodin 5/325 and they are not working, not even 2 at a time. Why don't they work for me but the Percocet does? How do I tell my doctor they are not working without her thinking I just want Percocet?

Percocet contains Acetaminophen and Oxycodone, while this contains a different narcotic, Hydrocodone.

Learn more Percocet details here.

Learn more Vicodin details here.

And not every medication works for everyone that takes it, your doctor is aware of that and knows it is completely normal.

Thus, in accordance with what Ann said, just inform you doctor that it isn't helping you. If you want to avoid having them think you're trying to get Percocet, don't ask for it, just tell them that this one isn't relieving your pain, at all.

Are there any other questions or concerns?

I'm having similar issues with my doctor. He's prescribed me tramadol, Norco, and vicoden, all are hydrocodone based, and NONE help my pain at all. Percocet DOES work for me and when he asked me what works, I told him. He looked at me like I was a drug addict, gave me a prescription to last me 5 days and said he didn't want me to become addicted. DON'T request percocet. Just say that hydrocodone based pain relievers don't work. I know what does and doesn't work for my body, and stating that a specific drug works will make the doctor look at you funny if it's an opioid/narcotic. I'm still in pain on percocet, but it's manageable. I currently have a mass in my liver, "fluid" floating around in my pelvic area, and a kidney that's 1/4 atrophied. The fluid is what's causing my pain, to the point I'm curled up in a ball crying, and I can take A LOT of pain. Having three kids didn't make me cry, but any type of pressure on my lower abdomen hurts and Makes me want to punch something.

If your Dr. is one that you can talk to then just tell her/him. I have a Dr. that does not listen but I hope you do. You also might try 10/325mg of Endocet every 6 hours. It works great for me.

Tramadol is not a narcotic and does not contain hydrocodone.

Tramadol just became known as a narcotic. I have the same issue, hydrocodone and tramadol help when pain is not severe. But in times when I am in severe pain they don't work, unless I take a few between times. These doctors all want to judge people without knowing what one is truly dealing with ( pain). I have complete tissue damage, that hurts tremendously at times.

Yes, tramadol was just reclassified as a narcotic here in Indiana within the last month. My mother had 2 refills left on her prescription for tramadol, but the pharmacy cannot fill the refills - it requires a new prescription each time, apparently. She's waiting for knee replacement surgery, and tramadol, meloxicam, and hydrocodone simply don't touch the pain. Any ideas as to what other meds might be stronger and able to help? She still needs to function, not be knocked out or loopy, to get through 5 or so weeks til surgery.

I have had RA for 40 years, severe, much joint damage, shoulder and hip replacement/revision. Norco is not helping, tho I've always had good luck with it; if I take two in a day, I have extreme constipation. Shoulder pain down my arm is not getting better. How do I know this is not a symptom of heart disease? And any ideas about pain management. I have never been addicted to Vicodin or Norco.

Have you ever gone to a chiropractorand had them work on your neck and shoulders? Your symptoms are very similar to mine and they went away when my chiropractor worked on some pinched nerves in my neck/shoulder area.

I would never go to a chiropractor ever! I recently had 2 friends in there mid-20s have strokes because of a real neck problem that was made worse because of the chiropractor working on their necks and causing major nerve damage both friends have taken weeks to get better. If you have back and neck problems go to a real doctor not a chiropractor all they do is make you depend on them and without ruling out a herniated disc or another real problem see a doctor first they know how to help for real even a deep tissue massage can make a neck problem worse as they see knots and try to work them out when something far more serious is going on

Actually Tramadol is a low level narcotic. You should probably work on getting your own facts straight. Look it up, talk to your doctor, or ask one like me.

Well at one time, tramadol was not considered a narcotic. Now it is. But it's really not. It's just a name. Tramadol contains no narcotics. Only some properties . Just because a doctor says somthing dosnt make it fact.

Hello, I've taken oxicodone and hydrocodone. Oxicodone was to strong after my rotator cuff surgery so I asked for hydrocodone. But now I changed back to oxicodone for my final refill,10-325 and I take only only half of s 10. Therefore oxicodone is so much better and stronger for pain(my doctor ask me what I wanted),so tell your doctor the truth and go back to oxicodone-10-325.But try to get 10's because you can break it in half according to your pain.Good luck and be happy The DOC

Tramadol is a synthetic opioid. Yes, opioid. Is it comparable to Norco/Vicodin/Lortab? No. It isn't even comparable to Codine. But, it IS a synthetic opiate. Funny thing about it is that it really doesn't work for anything more than a headache, but if you are having moderate withdrawals, like what you'd experience with stopping a hydro regiment, it will take your withdrawals away. 100%. Why? How? Because it's a synthetic opiate. (It's not going to be a whole lot of help to someone stopping a heavy oxy regiment, or stronger.

Hello. I'm 18 weeks pregnant and am experiencing excruciating sharp pains in my lower right abdominal area and a dull, throbbing pain in my lower right back area. After a visit to ER and nothing serious was confirmed I was told that I have muscular pain from a strain or round ligament stretching perhaps (nothing related to miscarriage, organ issue or infection). ER Doctor prescribed Norco; hydrocodone does absolutely nothing for me. It may as well be a placebo. Moreover I'm still experiencing extreme pain and cannot sleep, walk, or stand for more than few minutes without sharp pain. A heating pad helps as does 2,000 mg of extra strength acetaminophen. I know this dosage isn't healthy long term nor feasible as pain medication. What should I ask for that is pregnancy safe and effective? Thanks.

8/8/17. I cracked my radial head in my elbow. My range of motion id back 95% but I have terrible pressure in my forearm til this day. Norco nor tramadol work without taking more than perscribed. Any ideas? I too don't want to seem like a junkie but nothing is relieving the pain! Thanks in advance!

If i recall tramadol is a synthetic that tricks your pain receptors into thinking your taking a narcotic. I used to take them they worked ok and on the rare occasion of i ran out of norco it took away any symptons on withdrawal. Helped a little with pain but not to extent norco did. I now experience alot of stomache pain but usually a few hours after taking norco...so i have to take another norco just to get rid of that pain. Ive actually asked my dr. To help me get off of pain meds. and he has refused and also let me know that if i did i would have to go cold turkey. With all the hype on opiod epidemic i am worried if i stay on them i will not be able to find a pharmacy to fill it as he gives me a huge quantity of 240 a month. I dont want to take that many to manage this paintoI just want to be able to function

Did you ever find relief for your arthritis?
I have horrible pain in my neck and hydrocodone didn’t help. I’m trying to figure out what I can exclude as why my neck is hurting, based on hydrocodone not working. I have arthritis, but that may not be why it’s hurting like it is.
Thank you.

Re: AnnB (# 4) Expand Referenced Message

I realize this is old but just in case someone is looking at this, Endocet is an Oxycodone base the same as Percocet or Percodan, so it will work the same. Always look at what the base drug is. It's either Codeine, Hydrocodone, or Oxycodone (mixed with Tylenol or Ibuprofen); OxyContin = (Continuously released pure Oxycodone), Morphine = (immediate release); MSContin = (time released) based. Tramadol is the only one that isn't a narcotic. The rest are and they are leveled differently. Tramadol is the lowest, Tylenol 3 (Codeine) next, then Hydrocodone. Oxycodone based and Morphine are much stronger and are more for mid to severe chronic pain or for cancer patients. The Contin ones are 12hr long extended release medications. Morphine works for me whereas Oxy I absolutely hate. They make me feel like I'm on speed and they keep me awake. I was against them before I even tried them and I voiced my concerns to my dr because they have a much higher addiction rate than even Morphine pills. They have destroyed lives and I was terrified of them. I agreed to try them because I was told by my dr it was either Morphine or Oxy and being more scared of Morphine, I agreed. I ended up taking 1-2 pills and refused to take another. Was put on Morphine extended release and they were fine. Never became addicted at all. Was able to withdraw from them. I'm still on Norco which is hydrocodone and a similar base as the Morphine but I always take less than prescribed. Been on them for at least 12yrs and never had a problem.

Oxycodone is a scary drug and if I was told it was that or nothing I would suffer in pain before ever taking it again. I personally have never had an addictive personality unlike some but I would never recommend that drug since it's bad. Of course everyone reacts differently to a medication but Morphine or MSContin is better than Oxy and on the same level. I never felt doped up or high on it. The reason people are misusing the Oxy medications is due to them giving a "high" or "speed" feeling. They cause you to be wired like speed would so people have become addicted. Morphine, on the other hand, gives a relaxed feeling if anything. I wasn't able to sleep on Oxy and since I take medications at night the most, it was counter productive. During the day I was fine on MSContin, no feeling of drowsiness or anything. Able to work and drive on it. The last thing I want at night when trying to sleep is something that will keep me awake. People who are abusing it want that feeling so they are misusing the drug in high numbers. Makes Oxy a very deadly drug. If anyone has ever been addicted to methamphetamine or any other speed type medication then Oxy is definitely not the RX for them. If they have an addictive personality then realize that and refuse it. Don't walk down that road if you know it will end badly for you. If you are the type to never take more than prescribed or take less than prescribed then you may not have an issue but not everyone is and they need to realize that.
