Why Drs Like To Rx Methadone.
UpdatedThorough education by my Pain Management Board Certified Doctor, and his Physician Assistant. The reason Doctor's like Methadone, is it reacts dually as both a traditional narcotic pain reducer, as well as working on NERVE pain. Very few narcotics work on Nerve pain. Usually you have to add Lyrica, or a step therapy drug such as gabapentin or Topamax. So its two birds with one stone. Also, methadone, at therapeutic doses, is lower in amount necessary to work, hence less side effects, including brain fog, dopy, or constipation. This is the same reason Pain Specialists prescribe (or did) Oxycodone. It did not work on nerve pain, only like a traditional strong narcotic, however was much less sedating. And all our goals are to be more active and live our lives with friends and family. And not skipping to lie on ice packs at home!
The ability for doctors to Rx the proper medication, for the proper ailment, is becoming more and more difficult as the Government interferes. Legitimate patients have never suffered more! For more info on legislative affairs, and best practices, see USPAIN foundation, and join! I did!

From one David to another, I just wanted to add that I couldn't agree more with you on the notion of doctors having a more difficult time prescribing the appropriate medication for the proper ailment. Our government seems to be scared of what might or might not happen as a result of pain medication being more loosely distributed as it once was before things went on lockdown so to speak. And I believe what it really amounts to is greed and them wanting to have total control over the market to guarantee themselves a nice profit. They believe they can treat us like cattle if we continue to adhere to their way of doing things, taking what they want us to take, following whatever procedures they want us to obey; and nothing in line with what we truly need for ourselves in order to live an otherwise comfortable lifestyle.
But as bad as it may seem for some, the tides are turning in a new direction for those of us who choose not to support big pharma and their conniving schemes. As the legalization of marijuana makes its rounds across the 50 states, more and more patients are turning to mother nature for answers and not being as heavily reliant upon pharmaceutical preparations. Eastern medicine practices are also becoming increasingly more prevalent here in the US and will probably continue to grow over the coming years.
And as far as Methadone is concerned, it seems to be one of the better options out there for managing nerve pain; but with the way things have been going you'd almost wonder if they will eventually make that just as difficult to get as other narcotics when you go and try to fill your script.
