White Round Pill 54 583 V.s. White Round Pill 40

What is the difference? I was taking a white round pill imprinted with 40 and my pharmacy changed it to a white round pill imprinted with 54 583, which does not work as well and results in more swelling.

It sounds like your doctor prescribed two completely different types of medication and that may be why you're responding differently?

They are made of exactly the same thing one is just generic and they should have charged you less. Unless your doctor orders brand only on the prescription you're going to get generic I take this medication myself and I found no difference whatsoever between the two hope this helps.
