When Will Generic Provigil Be Available?

When will some drug company start making generic Provigil? What can be done to speed this up?

It was first approved and released on the U.S. market in 1998 and there is usually a 12 year exclusivity clause, under the Patent Protection and Affordable Care Act.

However, even once that time period has passed, several additional years may be added due to various exceptions that can be granted to the original company.

In most cases, a medication is available as the exclusive name brand for approximately 18 years and there is nothing that can be done, under the current laws, to speed up the process.

Generic forms of modafinil have existed for some time, under the names Modvigil, Modalert and Modapro (as well as a few others that are lesser-known). All are functionally identical in terms of their chemistry, but Cephalon holds a patent on the pill's release mechanism; as a result, anecdotal reports indicate that Provigil still works best, longest, and with the most consistent results, but is also far and away the most expensive option.
