What Is Adco Alzam

Updated

Hi

I've been on Adco Alzym for more than a year now and needless to say, I have increased my dosage to 4, I have however recently deicded to stop as my body was no dependant on it. It's been 3 days nights since I've left it and I am suffering, I haven't slept! I am battling to sleep, what do you suggest I do? How long will this last?

This contains the active ingredient Alprazolam, which is a Benzodiazepine and they can be habit forming, especially after taking it for so long.

If you suddenly stop taking it, it is normal to experience some withdrawal and rebound effects, such as the insomnia that you are experiencing. The proper way to stop this medication is by actually doing a slow taper.

Especially since a sudden cessation could cause seizures that may be dangerous.

I have been taking between 6-10 0.5mg adco alzam per day and am very worried about how to get off it. I tried stopping but I couldn't sleep and couldn't see properly and felt dizzy. I have 3 doctors which prescribe me the medication. I started taking it in America and since then I am completely hooked. Please help.

Adco-Alzam: I have been using this off and on for about a year. During the last 6 months I have been taking it daily. 1 or 2 x 0.25mg tabs per day or when I feel a bad panic/anxiety attack coming on. I find its the only thing that works with no side effects. SSRI's make me sleepy and so nauseous. Natural remedies such as rescue, biral and calmettes don't really help. My doctor does not want to prescribe more alzam or won't give me more than one month supply at a time without seeing me again - they are so worried that I'll develop a habit - you can see I am on such a low dose and most days I only take one tablet of 0.25mg. It is costing over R350 each doctor visit... I wish she'd just give me 2 months supply. Is there any reputable online store I can buy the real thing? I looked up rxonlinepharma - but there are a lot of dodgy review of people not getting their orders or getting low standard stuff which might not even be the real thing they ordered...

Wow Sunshine! That is a HIGH dosage I'm not surprised you got dependent on it. The thing is when going off medication - it is best to wean off it slowly. If you've been taking 6-10 of 0.5mg a day then I would suggest you limit yourself to 4-6 a day or break them in half to make 0.25mg. Speak to your doctor on how to wean off properly. Most doctors are very hesitant to prescribe Benzodiazipines for long term usage due to their addictive properties and the body's ability to become dependent on it. I would suggest you see a proper psychiatrist who can prescribe the right combination for you. I am now on 10mg urbanol in the morning and 25mg valdoxane at night. From taking 0.25mg 2-3 times a day I am now down to 0.25mg three times a week!!! I don't let myself feel guilty if after 2 or 3 days not taking then suddenly I have to take - because I know I am doing better than I was. I also break all my 0.5mg tablets in half. Keep some locked away, some in the bathroom and some in my bag. That way I don't have too many at my disposal - enough for about 5-7 days at a time. I was worried I was getting dependent on it but now I know I am not. I am trying to conceive and know that I need to be on as little medication as possible. With my anxieties its unlikely I'll be able to go off everything completely but hey, if I can be on as low dosage as possible and still be able to keep calm or reasonably calm then I think everything will be ok. I've also been taking Khali Phos tissue salts when necessary instead of the alzam (its no 6) and you can take them every 30 minutes if necessary. It does take a few days for it to start working but you also need to look at your lifestyle and if there are circumstances etc that make you more anxious - look at what you can do to change them. I hated my last job - not the work, but the ethics and greadiness and nepotism in the company and how they had no respect for their employees and nothing was ever consistent. I was so stressed out - eventually I realised this was the main cause (along with trying to get pregnant) of my anxieties so I was lucky enough to find a new job. It still has stressful moments but I am doing WAY better than before. Medication can only mask the symptoms and help you cope but one needs practical and positive ways in order to combat the anxiety.

Hi Tammy
Alzam (and other benzodiazipines) are habit forming. The body becomes dependent on it and instead of finding practical coping strategies we turn to what we know works - our trusty alzam! BUT, long term usage does create dependency and we end up increasing the dosages. You should never stop anxiety or anti depressant medicine cold turkey. You need to go through a weaning off period - I would say in your case at least a month... taper down slowly. I don't know what dosage you are on if it is 0.25mg, 0.50mg or 1mg. Speak to your doctor to advise you how to wean off slowly to decrease the body's dependency. Its not surprising you are battling to sleep. I've cut down my daily alzam to a about 3 x 0.25mg a week but my next hurdle is to start cutting out the sleeping tablets as I can't relax without them and fall asleep. I have managed to get from 10mg a night to 0.5mg a night but now next I have to start trying to do it twice a week where I take nothing. Going off meds cold turkey is just as dangerous as becoming addicted as suddenly your body doesn't have the chemical boost to make you feel better and everything suddenly gets worse and hits you like a ton of bricks. Just do it slowly.

Hi I suffer from panic attacks about once a month, would Alzam work if I just use it say twice a month. I have been dependant on tablets before so im terrified of going through that again.

Hi Tammy

You should never just stop taking anxiety or depression tablets especially after long term use - rather cut down to half a pill every night or morning depending when you take it (or if taking more than one pill slowly cut down the dosage) then cut down to every second day, then every third day - you should try wean off over +- 2 months as your body has become so used to it to just go cold turkey of course you are not going to sleep

Do I need a script for 0,5mg Alzam?

YES you need a script. If youve been dependant on pills before DONT start using alzam, they are very habbit forming. And like everyone says even if you start with 2 ull just increase with time (youll have to, cause your body gets used to it) Im speaking out of experience. I cant stop taking that stuff! I et sick LITERALLY, im dizzy (vertigo) headache, muscle aches exc. So now I just keep on taking them theres no other way for me.... Does any1 else experience this or experienced this? I need someone to talk too who knows what Im going through. :(

Hi Lolly30,

I have been taking 1 X 0.5mg Alzam twice daily ie. 0.5mg in the morning and 0.5mg again in the evening for about 2 years now. When I got home from a short vacation recently, I found out that I had accidentally left about 1 weeks supply behind in my room at the hotel I had been staying at. Well, I thought I'd leave it at that...so did not have my prescription medication for about a week - ie. waiting until it was time to collect my normal repeat monthly medications from the Doctor's Rooms - which was in a week anyway. Wow, My whole body ached, I could not sleep, I had chest pains & felt so bad, I thought the end was in sight! So, for me (although I know now it must be pretty addictive) I will be quite satisfied to continue, as it has helped me with my Anxiety with Depression. I will just be much more careful in future, not to leave any medications in hotel rooms again!

You can't just stop it - ull have to wean urself of. 4 is also a high dosage. Ull prob start getting more withdrawal symptoms. Start by halving ur normal dose for about 2 weeks so 2 a days then cut it down to 1 a day for 2 weeks then 1/2 a day for 2 weeks. Also keep spare for emergency , when u finally got urself off it. Good luck. It's possible.

Hi, I just want to throw out something here because I've followed this forum, and posted, replied, and taken advice from people. So, one factor that is snowballing into a a major problem now is those that are not educating themselves on medications, thus ending up in an ER, adding fuel to those anti substance groups. You want to be brave? Do you think that you're not an "addict"?

Well, here's what you don't know.. Every time I go to my pain mgt doctor to get meds that I have become dependant on because they allow me to walk.. bend... sit on a bench.. without being confined to a wheelchair. SO, What's happening, is that some people are taking meds that that are potentially addictive, and really, really, messing up the world of medicine for those that know How to take the med, What will happen if one runs low, When to stop taking them, and Why there are reasons. Man, educate yourself! Me? I'm just a U.S.Marine, that lost a few pieces of myself in a place that doesn't tolerate free press, so, Your actions have reactions on people in all types of situations.. Do You Get What I Mean???

Quit your whining, but most of all, look in the mirror.. Who do you see..? And don't take stuff w/out knowing that you can't take it properly... Geez...

Emily, what are you talking about? I've got no idea.

I can guess that you're referring to me as "Emily", My name is Eliam, and my point is the irritating fact that people decide to just stop taking a med and then post a foolish question. "what should I do"? C'mon, man, wean off the drug, ya know?? It's common sense to know what you're taking, but "common sense" is defined as the "common person. Save the space for people that have issues that can't be resolved by self education. If that doesn't answer your question, then I'll be direct, but not here, as I respect this forum..

Sorry Eliam! Got ya! I think my blondness and the fact that I'm still waking up confused me there.
