Weight Gain From Dexorostat?

Updated

I have gained 10 pounds since the doctor put me on this drug to improve my concentration.. He says he has never heard of this...that people generally lose weight. I haven't been eating more, in fact I have eaten less. I have had more energy and it has helped my concentration, but the weight gain is horrible!!!!?????

Has he done any other tests to rule out other reasons for the sudden weight gain?

Yes, everything else checks out fine..thyroid etc. He can't figure it out.

Don't take I don't know for an answer. My wife went three years with under diagnosed hypothyroidism and undiagnosed lupus, diabetes and increased cortisol production. Most tests for those need to be conducted more than once...do your own research and don't rely completely on your doctor. There are multiple tests for thyroid disfunctions, lupus, and almost anything else. In my wife's case, borderline positive results were dismissed for being negative, albeit incorrectly, and the doctor that she had when this began told her that she was getting her womanly curves. Many of these tests are interpreted differently by different labs, so, obtain your results and look them up on RELIABLE websites that end in .edu or from someplace like Mayo Clinic, and look at multiple sites. Not sure what you're taking, but have you checked the drug company's website for side effects? Many drugs can cause either weight gain or loss...it depends on the person. Bottom line, like I said before, is don't take I don't know for an answer...go to another doc if you have to.

One way to find more information than what is included in the ordinary patient monograph, is to do a search for the drug name, followed by the words full prescribing information or physician prescribing information.

This will bring up much more detailed information on the drug, since the usual monographs that you get from your pharmacy or like the ones we have on this site, just the list the most common side effects and adverse events.

That said, I accessed the one for this medication and there is nothing, even among the most rare side effects in relation to weight gain.

Thus, I have to conclude that it is not being caused by the medication.

People do change, it is possible that your body is just naturally making you gain a little more weight as you age.

I ran into the same problem after I entered my 30's. I suddenly put on some weight when previously, I had always been underweight.

I also wondered if it was a medication or some other problem, but my doctor ran all the tests and we found nothing. So it appears it was just a natural time of my life for me to do so.

As people age, their metabolisms naturally slow and some weight gain is normal.

For me, it actually put me at a normal weight for my height, so I just had to learn to live with the fact that I was not going to be quite as tiny as I used to be anymore.

Lifestyle factors can also contribute, such as a healthier diet if you have suddenly adopted one and you used to each much more junk, or suddenly eating 3 meals a day when you used to just eat 1 or 2.

I grew up very malnourished and didn't begin eating normally until after I was married, so that also was a contributing factor. Though the nurse and doctor at the practice we use still tell me I am skin and bones, LOL, I am 20 pounds more than I was for most of my life.

So it could just be a natural change in your body.

There is really no need to worry unless the weight gain gets out of hand and continues with no end in sight.

Oh and Jake, just a note to you, if someone doesn't mention the drug name in their post and you aren't sure what they are talking or asking about, try glancing up towards the top of the post page.

For instance, at the top of this page, just under the email and bookmark buttons, you will see a navigation line that says

Home DextroStat DextroStat Discussions

This will let you know what forum the person is posting in, so in most cases you can figure out what drug they are seeking information about.

That is how, in this instance, I knew which one she was asking about and that weight gain is not a normal side effect for it.

Ok...thanks for all the info. I was looking for information on a med that a friend is taking and I stumbled upon this. It sounded a lot like my wife's situation, although I agree, 10 pounds isn't too much as long as it doesn't get out of control. My wife gained 40 lbs in about three months. I also know another guy whose wife went for about three years with undiagnosed lupus, and after what we've been going through lately, I wanted to warn J to not let it go if the weight gain feels out of control.

No problem Jake, anytime.

Yes, you are right, 40pounds is definitely something to be concerned about, that is not a normal gain rate and I am glad you kept seeking information for your wife.

Thanks for the reply...I know peopel can can weight on certain drugs and everyone reacts differently, but I was confused because he said this drug (Dextrostat) makes people lose weight...although he gave it to me for concentration it is often given to people that want to lose weight.

I just read my last post and although the Dextrostat has helped my concentration, apparently it hasn't done much for my spelling.
