Weaning Off Of Atorvastatin

Updated

I am on 80 mg of Atorvastatin. Can I safely start cutting my doses to 40 for a week or two, then half the 40 for a week or two, then half the 20, then get off without the extreme side effects?

Hi Terry,

Generally, it's best to discuss tapering protocols with your prescribing doctor in order to mitigate possible risk factors (e.g. rebound effects or withdrawal symptoms). However, as a last resort, and because only you know your body and how it responds to Atorvastatin, my opinion is that your current approach certainly seems feasible.

Since Atorvastatin is used to treat high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, simply changing your diet (staying away from foods that raise those numbers) should theoretically yield noticeable results in and of itself.

Unfortunately no one can accurately determine ahead of time how your body will react to not having the medication when you do come off of it, as there are a multitude of influential factors I'm sure, but taking care of yourself to the best of your ability when it comes to nutrition, exercise and reducing stress can play a big role in how you feel during the process.
