Hello, I cannot find any information on taking the supplement "Sam-e" (S-Adenosylmethionine) with warfarin. Would love to find out if this can be taken while on a blood thinner? ## Hello, Diana! How are you? It isn't advisable, the Mayo Clinic notes that SAMe can affect your risk of bleeding when taking with blood thinners, such as Warfarin or anticoagulants. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Warfarin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Hi, Can you post a link that shows Mayo Clinic indicating risk of interact between Warfarin and S-adenosylmethionine? I cannot find anything on that. Does anybody take Damiana and Warfarin, and would there be any interaction between the two? I have tried Maca with Warfarin but my INR was 5.1. ## In my personal investigation, there appear to be no drug interaction studies between pharmaceutical preparations and most OTC herbal supplements; including Damiana. That said, the general consensus is to talk with your prescribing doctor before adding any herbal supplements to your prescription regimen. You could also try consulting a naturopathic physician who understands how certain plants function in our bodies (via their mechanism of action) relative to blood thinners such as Warfarin. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but it's best to be on the safe side, especially if you're going to be on Warfarin for any extended length of...

I understand that it is alright to take Tylenol when on Warfarin which I am doing but for awhile taking Tylenol did actually effect my INR results and the Warfarin dosage had to be altered accordingly. I have been diagnosed with Bursitis and the Tylenol is not helping at all but I hesitate to try any other pain medication if there is one that is compatible with Warfarin. Seems to me when on Warfarin there are so many limitations. ## There are others you can try, if your doctor approves, they just have to be ones that don't cause additional blood thinning, such as Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Morphine, or other opiates. The NIH warns that they carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth. Only your physi...

Is taking Garcinia Cambogias contraindicated for people taking Warfarin? Thanks Pat ## Hi Pat, Based on my research, when it comes to most herbal supplements, the drug interactions with prescription drugs are not well known until they have been around a long time. The majority of herbal supplements are usually well tolerated and don't interact but it's impossible to know for sure. If I can make any suggestions, it would be to let your doctor know that you are taking this supplement and to monitor any side effects while taking the Garcinia Cambogias and Warfarin together. If it were me, I would just take some notes based on how I'm feeling after starting the supplement- just to be aware of any odd changes that might occur. You can learn more about this drug on the page for Wa...

I have a mechanical heart valve and I'm on Warfarin. My doctor wants me to take Flomax. Has anyone heard of any drug interactions between Flomax and Warfarin? ## I haven't been able to find any interactions listed by the FDA, or NIH, so far, but it is always best to double check to be careful. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Flomax as possibly including nausea, dizziness, stomach pain, and urinary retention. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank You :) It has caused my INR to go higher. I get it checked every week.

I was started on Warfarin in May 2016. Dx: Pericarditis w Afib. Mid July 2016, I had a ruptured foot tendon accompanied by severe nerve pain in feet & tingling in my lips. I spoke with the doctor on call & was told it could not be the Warfarin. In June 2017, the joint & nerve pain & toe pain became so severe that I stopped the Warfarin & started Nattokinase. Yes I have been on Metoprolol & realize that can have the same side effects, but my question is specific to Warfarin. Thank you for having this great chat line. ## Yes, those can be side effects of Warfarin, according to FDA reports. It may also cause nausea, dizziness, increased risk of bleeding, and easy bruising. As to Nattokinase, that is just a supplement, so it has not been tested and proven to help wit...

Will using valum have any affect on Warfarin? ## I didn't find any problems or interactions listed between the two, but you should check with your doctor, or pharmacist to be certain. Were they both prescribed by the same doctor? It is actually not safe to try to break down any medication and inject it, which isn't intended to be used that way. Tablets contain fillers and not all of them are meant to be broken down by the human body, normally they are just expelled in your waste. When you break down the tablet and inject it, you are putting these fillers into your body in a manner in which it cannot process them out. This creates the risk of blockages, which could result in stroke or embolism. ## INR TESTED 3 DAYS AGO AT DOCTOR'S/RESULTS 1.6 INR TESTED IN HOSPITAL LAB ONLY T...

Pease identify a round pinkish/orange pill, scored on one side with W5 imprinted, and the other side imprinted with IG or 1G. ## Hi Jeffrey, I located a round orange pill with W over 5 on one side and IG on the back (each letter divided by a score line). This particular tablet is reportedly identified as Warfarin sodium 5mg; which is an anticoagulant drug used to prevent heart attacks and blood clots... For verification, the manufacturer is listed as Citron Pharma and the pill itself carries a National Drug Code of 57237-124. You can also visit the manufacturer's product page for additional information at: citronpharma.com/product-details Hope this helps!

Can you please advise me? My mother is 83 years old, she is taking Warfarin for a few years, she is extremely careful with this medication, she also suffers from Arthritis on her knee and wrists. Can you please advise me of a painkiller that she could take? Also I think she could benefit of taking a vitamin or a tonic. Any advise would be appreciated. ## glen - Who on earth are you asking to advise you about your mom's health needs? You're asking medical questions, some about serious medical issues. If she's taking Warfarin (a blood thinner), I'm assuming she has or has had problems with blood clots. Her arthritis might be helped by OTC anti-inflammatories but she may be helped far more by prescription medications in this category (I know I was) that she can only get fro...

Does warfarin contain porcine intestine products? I was just diagnosed with alpha gal allergy and need to know if it will be a problem? ## What are the markings on the Warfarin that you have? Since this is a generic, it is manufactured by several different companies and the inactive ingredients may differ for all of them. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding, and easy bruising.

I have a lot of different illness and pain, I used to take tylonol ibuprofin etc, but started taking warfarin 5mg to thin blood and now they say i cannot take pain pills that also thin the blood. Q. what can I take for pain that will not interfere?? ## Hi Martha, From what I've read, Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen are two types of pain medications that do not thin the blood in and of themselves. So the OTC meds you were on prior to starting Warfarin are both fine in that regard. However, I would still recommend talking with your doctor first just to be on the safe side. You can learn more about this drug on the page for Warfarin Details Have you also considered looking into things like acupuncture or essential oils for additional pain relief? ## But I have a read that ibuprofen can mak...
