Warfarin Nerve & Joint Pain

Updated

I was started on Warfarin in May 2016. Dx: Pericarditis w Afib. Mid July 2016, I had a ruptured foot tendon accompanied by severe nerve pain in feet & tingling in my lips. I spoke with the doctor on call & was told it could not be the Warfarin. In June 2017, the joint & nerve pain & toe pain became so severe that I stopped the Warfarin & started Nattokinase. Yes I have been on Metoprolol & realize that can have the same side effects, but my question is specific to Warfarin. Thank you for having this great chat line.

Yes, those can be side effects of Warfarin, according to FDA reports. It may also cause nausea, dizziness, increased risk of bleeding, and easy bruising.

As to Nattokinase, that is just a supplement, so it has not been tested and proven to help with any given medical condition.

How are you feeling, now? Has there been any change? Are you on any other medications?

I feel less coldness in feet & hands, much less depression & some decrease in nerve & joint pain being off warfarin. The things that might be contributers to the nerve pain such as low back or diabetes are not factors & have been ruled out. I continue to have both nerve pain & joint pain from the metoprolol, but am almost afraid to try new beta blocker meds...I tried diltiazem/calcium channel blocker as an alternative prescribed by the cardiologist & had much more reaction & more quickly. I know that nattokinase is a supplement & not a medication, but am willing to take it having fully reviewed the research (it has been researched). My atrial fibrillation is paroxysmal & I was in normal sinus rhythm for greater than 2 weeks without any medication. Pretty sure that taking a decongestant for a sinus issue set if off the last time...will avoid those in the future. I have medical background & work closely with the cardiology electrophysiologist. I take the lowest dose of metoprolol 25mg divided with 1/2 in am & 1/2 in the pm.
