Want To Taper All The Way Off Suboxone After 10 Years

Updated

I want to taper off after ten years on suboxone. I've never taken more than 4 mg/day and I'm currently at .5 mg/day and struggling. Had no problem getting from 4 mg down to 1, but it's gotten harder recently as I've gone down from 1 to .5. Everything I'm reading makes me want to give up before going any further. Years ago I was able to taper off oxy little by little until I barely noticed the final step to zero. I've heard that's not possible with sub and that I'm going to feel terrible for a long time no matter how slow I go. I have enough of the 2 mg films to last almost a year at .5 mg/day. Has anyone ever done an extremely slow taper and managed to not go through hell when they finally stop?

Based on your description I get the sense that it may simply end up taking longer for your body to make the jump from 1mg to 0.5mg, than it did coming down from those higher dosages. This is probably because your system isn't completely ready to let go of the drug. But who knows; everyone reacts to these medications differently, so it could be ready if you just give it more time.

In my opinion, tapering off this type of medication is usually best done under the supervision of a pain management doctor and/or specialist; if you're trying to play it safe that is.

Have you considered talking to any doctors about setting up a tapering schedule to help streamline the process?

I'm having a similar problem. The withdrawal symptoms seem stronger on the last 1/4 of a 2 mg strip but I need to be off for oral surgery soon.
