Visual Problems Since Taking Nitrofurantoin 50mg

Hi. Has anyone else experienced visual disturbances on this med?

First day I started taking them I felt pressure in my head... felt a bit strange but was happy I could cope with the effects.

Second day about 1 hour after taking my first tablet I noticed I wasn't able to see all of someone's face. It progressed into the whole of my left side of my vision being distorted, similar to how it is with a migraine, but much worse.

I've since stopped taking them and been given penicillin for my uti.

I've searched all over the internet but can't find a similar story. Any insight much appreciated.

The FDA does warn that this medication has been known to cause optic neuritis as a side effect, which is an inflammation of the optic nerve, so the could be what caused the issue.

Can anyone else that's taken this medication chime in with their experiences?

The NIH lists the typical side effects of Penicillin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash.

How are you doing, now? Has there been any change?

Thank you for your reply. My vision has more or less recovered to what it was now. My uti came back but taking ciprofloxacin now and doing well on it.

To anyone that reads this. Do not take nitrofurantoin unless there is no alternative. The side effects just aren't worth it.
