Trouble From Accutane?

Updated

My son (Age 17) took Accutane for about 17 weeks when he started going downhill mentally. Dermatologist would not continue treatment until we brought in a note from a psychiatrist saying he was okay. I chose not to continue with treatment. Son seemed to be okay. Anyway, he now has odd behavior going around the house saying schnit, schnit, schnit and no, no, no. He also sticks his chin out, makes and odd movement with his lips, and you can see the cords in his neck. He sometimes stops when he walks. This seemed to start after stopping the Accutane which was around 6 weeks ago. He has lost weight, isn't interested in eating anymore, and feels that he has something wrong with his stomach. He looked at me one time and it was so sad because he looked haunted. Has anyone had any experience like this? I was told by the nurse about the side effects that if I read the side effects of Tylenol I would never take another Tylenol again. (This was due to my concern when I read the pamphlet given to me when I was considering Accutane.) Oh, it appears the acne is coming back too.

I've taken Accutane a few years ago. The side effects are what worried me as well. I was also age 17 at the time. The most common side effects I experienced were the severe chapped lips and red face. I do recall that I felt instances of depression and mood swings, but I knew in my head it was the Accutane causing it, so I was able to keep it under control for the most part.

Your son seems to have experienced heavier side effects than myself, however my acne only came back slightly post-treatment and now it is gone for the most part at age 20.

This was my experience and hopefully we can get other patients input as well. Please post back if you have any questions or comments to add...

I also took the drug from 16-17 years old, also experienced few side effects besides dry skin (made me more happy than worried cause it meant the drug was working) and chapped lips and ultra sensitivity to the sun. I used to be the tannest in my family, but after that six months of being under virtual house arrest, I have never been able to fix my pasty white ghostlike complection, which is a really insignificant side effect, but i am now 21, so I finished taking Accutane almost 5 years ago and usually had nothing but good things to say. It cured my scarring and blotchiness, but now that the novelty has worn off, I have become more concerned about what stupid decision i allowed my mother to authorize, because as a adopted homeschooled kid i did what mother said no questions asked. Little did I realize that mother worried more about the appearance of her daughter than the internal health both then and in the future. If I had actually read up on this drug I would have stood my ground for the first time in my life, and refused to risk such horrible side effects in the attempt to be pretty. Now I am experiencing digestive problems, and I am almost certain that I am infertile, as my fiancee and I have been trying for over a year, consistently, to make a baby, but to no avail. He has a son already, so I know its not his shortcomings, its got to be my fault, and I regret ever asking my mother to make me pretty, the price was higher than i ever imagined and id rather be happy and riddled with acne scars than pretty and in pain and miserable for the rest of my life. Thats my story, sorry for rambling lol, just thought id ad my story for further support :)
Stay strong y'all!
