I started taking Triamterene HCTZ 37.5-25mg each morning, along with plavix and asprin. I drink at least 100 oz of water every day, and I find myself retaining more fluid and urinating less. What am I doing wrong? ## Hello, Shelly! How are you? As detailed by the NIH, you are likely taking it more fluid than you are expelling. 100oz is a lot. The FDA lists the other typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and hypotension. Are you on any other medications? How much do you take in of other liquids? Even fluids in your food counts.

Can taking triamterene twice a day to prevent bloating cause severely painful cramping in the hands and feet? ## Hello, Eva! How are you doing? Has anything changed? In many cases, cramping in those body areas is a sign of dehydration, according to the NIH. Since this medication removes fluid from the body, it could be that you're not taking in enough to keep your fluid balance. How much liquid do you take in each day? Are you on any other medications? What dosage do you take of the Triamterene?

I mistakenly took a double dose of Triamterene. I need to know if I need to call my doctor. ## That is not an overdose amount, in theory, though it can always vary from person to person, depending on our tolerance and sensitivity to medications. Did you experience any adverse effects? The FDA warns that taking more than prescribed may cause nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dehydration, and hypotension. For future reference, when in doubt, it is always better to call your doctor, poison control, or your nearest poison control to be safe. ## Ha ha ha! Leave it to me!! That last part should have read emergency services, not a repeat of poison control!!! Very sorry!!! Can you please post back and let me know how you are doing? I'm worried!

I take 30 mg methadone daily in 3 doses of 10 mg ea. for chronic pain. I am now also on triamterine hctz 37.5-25 mg a day. Can I still take 2 Advil with one dose if methadone a day for break thru pain? Also, I take 1 potassium supplement (99mg) daily. When I forget, I eat 1 or 2 bananas. Is any of this wrong when taking triamterine as stated above? ## Hello, Maria! How are you? The combination of Triamterene and potassium should only be taken together, if your doctor feels it is necessary. Both can increase potassium levels, and too much can be just as dangerous as not having enough in your body, according to the NIH. The Advil can also raise it, when taking with the Triamterene. The FDA warns that the Advil should not be taken with the Triamterene, because they can increased the toxici...

Do you have any more questions or information to add? Please post back if you do. ## I too am on Triamterene and ran out about a week ago. I called my pharmacy to see if my refill was ready the day before I ran out. They told me I didn't have any refills left. I asked if they could call my Doctor and they said no that I would have to call him, so I did and was told they would call it in. The pharmacy gave me 3 pills until the Doctor called it in. Hey, I was wondering if Triamterene hctz can help you lose weight? ## Hi Amberlee, Because Triamterene is a diuretic, I can honestly only see it helping you lose water weight temporally (as you'd obviously have to rehydrate sooner than later LOL). Personally I wouldn't encourage you to go down that route at all, but if you do, please be sure to consult a doctor first to go over proper/safe dosing protocols that suit your individual needs. Keep in mind too that this medication's primary intended use is for high blood pressure, so if your levels are already low or you don't know where they general range from, it would be imperative to have your blood pressure evaluated or monitored before starting treatment. I hope this helps! ## My doctor just told me she was putting me o...

i take sandoz triam and have to cut in half. which causes pill to break up in several pieces. i have a splitter. my question is there a lower dose i don't have to split? ## Hello, Wayne! How are you? Unfortunately, that is the lowest dose available of the Triamterene with Hydrochlorothiazide. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, increased urination and dehydration. Have you discussed it with your doctor? Perhaps you could switch to a different medication.

I do not take triamterene every day as it says on the prescription, it does say as needed so I take it every other day or every two days, I have been getting constipated lately, and I wonder if I am ok in doing what I am doing with this prescription. thank you. ## Hello, Leslie! How are you? This is a diuretic and they can be prescribed and taken on an as needed basis, so taking it that way is fine, as long as your doctor approves. I have a standing prescription for one myself that's only to be taken as needed, because I dehydrate too easily to take it all the time. The FDA lists its typical side effect as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache and increased urination. It's hard to say what may be causing the constipation. Are you on any other medications? Have your eati...

Hello, I have stenosis of the left and right ICA. The left is 75% blocked and right 50% blocked. I possibly have Moyamoya, as well.(Hence the stenosis) My family doctor just switched me to this combo because after being on 50MEQ of potassium, I finally reached a normal level range of potassium. Is this something I should revisit with my doctor? I can't afford anymore narrowing! They are still trying to figure me out. ## Hello, Sheryl! How are you? I've not found anything listed in the side effects provided by the FDA that says this medication may cause more narrowing. Its typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dehydration and increased urination. Have you consulted a cardiologist?

does this medicine expire. This is my detailed message ## Hello, CC! How are you? Yes, all medications have expiration dates, because they tend to lose effectiveness, with time and exposure to the elements that cause degradation, such as heat, light and moisture. For tablets and capsules, if they are in a bottle as dispensed by most pharmacies, it is one year from the date it was filled. However, if they are in the original factory sealed container, then they are usually good for 3 to 4 years. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, hypotension, increased urination and dehydration. Is there anything else I can help with?

Hi. I hope someone can help me. I was told that my BP is too low now and I was to be taken off the Maxzide immediately. I was shocked. Anyway. Now that I am off I am swelling up horrible and she says this is normal. ??? Please someone help me with this. It doesn't feel normal. ## Hello, Jenny! How are you? Yes, a sudden withdrawal of a diuretic, such as Maxzide can cause fluid retention. However, how is your blood pressure, now? That is a concern, because too much fluid retention could cause it to rise to dangerous levels or result in congestive heart failure. Are you on any other blood pressure medications? Other side effects of this medication, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and dehydration. ## Hello Verwon. I am miserab...

Am allergic to Blue #2 which is found in Mylan's Triamterene HCTZ. How do I find a pharmacy that sells Actavis' (formerly Watson Pharma) version of this medication which does not contain Blue#2? ## Hello, Tom! How are you? If you inform your pharmacy of the issue, they should be able to order the other one in for you. Side effects to this medication may include nausea, dizziness, dehydration and hypotension. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thanks so much. That's exactly what I'll do. Tried already at my pharmacy(cvs) and they would not order anything other than Mylan. Same story at Publix. I'll find someone this week I'm sure. Thanks again.
