Trepiline 10mg - Stuttering

Updated

Good Day
My 4 year old grandson was prescribe Trepiline ( 1 in the evening).

He started stuttering and when we went to the doctors to see what the reason could be, the doctor prescribed the above and said we should see what reaction this has to the stuttering. Is this correct? I feel very uncomfortable with the medication!

Thank you

Did the doctor posit any theory on why he might have started stuttering?

This medication contains the active ingredient Amitriptyline, which is a tricyclic antidepressant that has quite a few medical uses, so it can help if his problem has been caused by something such as anxiety, ADHD and several other possibilities.

I had an initial good effect with amitriptyline hcl, which had been prescribed for migraine, when I was in my early 30's. I had to discontinue it, as by the time I reached 50 mg. I had developed a severe stuttering problem, and an exaggerated startle response. I ultimately came to a point at which I hardly wished to talk. My mother later informed me that I had stammered for a short time when I was a small child. My prescribing neurologist was not helpful at all concerning this matter. This was over twenty years ago. I still stammer when I am tired. There is an article in a June 17, 1996 U.S. News and World Report magazine on off-label uses of medication, that references stuttering in elderly persons who had taken the drug.

I don't know if you'll ever see my reply as your original post was from 2012 but have had wonderful results dealing with my stuttering after being prescribed Abilify as an off-label use to help with it. I was seeing a doctor for something totally unrelated and he of course noticed my stuttering from our discussions and mentioned that he had recently read research by another doctor that he just happened to know and trust, dealing with Abilify and other similar drugs being able to help stutterers. I had stuttered since I was young, maybe 5 or 6 years old and for a while it had really taken over and nearly ruined my life at times, especially in my later teenage years and early 20's it was awful at times and it really altered the course of my life in different ways, I avoided many situations where I had to speak to anyone, especially if there was any pressure or stress involved.

I can still clearly remember one particular day where I had to make a somewhat important phone call where I had to call a business and ask for a certain person and then ask him a few basic questions about a project I was doing for my job at the time. I got so far as the receptionist who answered the phone and I said "Hi, can I speak to aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" and on and on it went, I was never able to get his name out and I just hung up! Now, this wasn't that big of a deal as far as my project went, I still was able to complete it somehow getting the info I needed from somewhere else, but just that one time that it happened, no different than the problems I had every other day, REALLY got me down for some reason and I sat there for an hour or so, seriously contemplating suicide. For whatever reason, that day I really was down on myself and the endless parade of problems that my stuttering put me through, I was thinking how it would never improve much if at all, thus the rest of my life (I was maybe 21 at the time) would be the same endless problems and sadness caused by my stuttering and why even bother dealing with another 50, 60, 70 or more years of this hell! Luckily for me, I didn't act on those thoughts and as some time passed I calmed down and got on with things, but it certainly wasn't the end of it. As I grew a little older, the stuttering seemed to subside somewhat, but not completely and I was able to cope with it better and at least function in life, although I still avoided many situations and that caused many side effects for me.

Once I started on the Abilify, I'd say that my problems with stuttering decreased by 80 or 90 percent soon after starting. I wasn't doing anything else differently, it was just that speaking clearly came much, much easier for me, for no particular reason. There have been two times that I've run out of it and went without it for a week or so each time and I noticed a noticable increase in my stuttering.

I would highly recommend having an open mind about medication if you have a child who stutters. I tried many other methods of dealing with my stuttering, including spending 3 weeks at the program run at Hollins College which is known around the world as one that's had great success for some, but I had little luck with their methods in the real world. I wish badly I had been able to start on the Abilify 20 or 30 years ago (I'm 40 now) besides allowing me to avoid so many painful experiences over the years, I know it would've really altered the course of my life for the better. Yet, I'm not bitter about it all, I'm still happy to have found this help recently, its better than if I'd never found it and suffered through my entire life!
