I am 66 yrs, having essential hypertension since 1996. I started with Nuril2.5mg but the medicines had to be increased gradually to Amlopress, Telsar, Amlopress AT( though my pulse rate alaways been around 50-60pm). Now am taking Tide10mg, Arkamin thrice, Tozaar R5 twice, Amlopress AT, yet BP varies between 140/90 and 120/75. . I play tennis almost regularly but of late geting tired and out of breath soon. I also have an enlarged prostate 40 gm. Kindly guide me so that I can have stable BP. Regards

Well, everyone's blood pressure fluctuates, no one ever has the same steady level. It is affected by stuff you eat and drink, activities, stress, sleep habits and many other factors.

Just as an example, if I am very cold, mine can measure as high as 150/90, even with my medications and then, as I get warm, it will start to drop to a normal level. My doctor has even witnessed this in her office. The last time I was in for an appointment, I was so cold my hands were numb and when she checked, it read 153/82, but as I sat there a few minutes and got warmer, when she checked again, it had already dropped to 130/74.

No one, even people that don't have high blood pressure, will get the same reading all the time. That is why a doctor doesn't diagnose someone as having high blood pressure based just on one or two slightly elevated readings. They can even be caused just because someone is nervous about seeing the doctor.

A diagnosis of high blood pressure is given when someone consistently has high readings or, when it reads at a very high, dangerous level. Therefore, it is normal for yours to fluctuate and it can even change in just a few minutes.

As to being out of breath, it is also hard to say what's causing that. Some of these medications could be causing it as a side effect, or it could be due to either your blood pressure being at a higher level or if its dropping low. You should really talk to your doctor about it, so you can get to the root of the problem.

And having been on multiple blood pressure medications myself, one thing I do greatly want to warn you about is to closely watch your fluid intake. Many of these medications, including the diuretic, will make your body get rid of fluids, so it is very easily to end up dehydrated.

Are there any other questions or comments?

Thanks a lot. Recently my doctor advised me to Take Peritol before meals twice a day with a Tozaar H in morning, an AmloAT in evening and a Dynapres after dinner(as I also have enlarged prostate( 40 gm with 40ml urine left ). Arkamin to be discontinued by tapering in three days. Will discontinuing arkamin cause any rise in blood pressure? Warm Regards R G Soni
