Does the topiramate help back pain because ive just been changed to pain management and my new doctor just changed me from tramadol to topiramate 50 mg and I haven't seen anything about back pain on here. Can someone help me before I start taking this?

It can sometimes help with certain types of nerve pain, according to FDA reports, it is also used to help prevent seizures. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, mood changes, and weight changes. (NDC 0245-0708)

The only way to really discover how it will work for you is by trying it. Have you started taking it, yet?

I am not a doctor. I can only share my personal experience and opinion. I take Topamax (the branded version of Topiramate) for a seizure disorder. I have had allergic reactions to generic versions so stick to the brand. According to the manufacturer of Topamax, it is indicated for the treatment of seizures and migraines and nothing else. I have heard of it being prescribed for the purpose of weight loss since that is often a side effect of the drug. In my case, that weight loss was achieved by means of being very ill as I titrated up to a therapeutic level of medication. Once my medication leveled off and my body adjusted, the weight loss stopped. I think that prescribing this medication for weight loss is irresponsible. It should not be overlooked that this is a drug that changes the users brain chemistry to be effective. Using it for purposes it was not meant for should be done with extreme caution and only after other options have been exhausted. I have never heard of it being used for back pain.
