Is Tizanidine Considered A Narcotic?

Updated

People that take Tizanidine will test positive for opiates. It's considered a narcotic, because there's 1 ingredient that they use in this and its used in opiates like percocet. The reason I know? - I just got prescribed it and it is a muscle relaxer, but my doctor told me it is considered a narcotic and he gave me a urine stick to take home, so he knows I'm taking it. Just so you people know, it will show up positive.

Editor's note: Tizanidine is not considered an opiate. It is classified as a muscle relaxer [1].

You are wrong. It absolutely is not a controlled substance therefore not a narcotic. There are no opiates in zanaflex. Please know what you are talking about before you respond.

Actually Tizanidine will NOT test positive for opiates. I take Tizanidine 3 times daily as directed by my Rheumatologist and all of my tox screens especially those run in emergency rooms / hospitals test negative for opiates. Please be more cautious when putting such information out there and be sure to thoroughly research all medications prescribed to you before taking them.

Hey, it's a narcotic. Perhaps you should actually RESEARCH SOMETHING before you claim it as fact!!!

Why do you think it's a narcotic? Do some research and every where you look it tells you it is not a narcotic , it is a Muscle relaxer and is not tested for on your normal 5 or 12 panel drug test...

I don’t believe Zanaflex is a narcotic because my pain doctor is able to send it electronically to my pharmacy but I have to get a paper prescription from my pain management dr for oxy’s to hand deliver to the pharmacy. I hope this helps:)

Re: Jess (# 7) Expand Referenced Message

Your doctor's are actually allowed to electronic send narcotic prescriptions to the pharmacy but they don't want their patients to know that. It's only for emergencies and they rather not doing it

No. Tizanidine is NOT considered a narcotic, it is a MUSCLE RELAXER. To anybody whom has a doctor that says it is then you need to get a new doctor it is dangerous for a doctor to be so WRONG!!!!

Zanaflex (tizanidine) isn't a narcotic or a controlled substance! Yes, it is a muscle relaxer like Soma which is, in fact, a controlled substance because it's extremely addictive. However, Zanaflex is not, therefore it will NOT come up on a drug panel! I will mention people shouldn't worry if they have a script for their meds regardless if they come up and if you do not you shouldn't be taking someone else's medications! To check the DEA list of narcotic meds, here is a link. This is accurate as it's a government site and they certainly know what they're talking about. Controlled Substances - DEA Diversion Control Division: deadiversion.usdoj.gov/schedules

Re: Justarandompainpatient (# 3) Expand Referenced Message

It isn’t a narcotic and doesn't show on my p.o standard test but I go to dr. That sends them out. And yes, I have failed for benzodiazepines but I also take more than prescribed

Yes it is a narcotic, but not an opioid. I am actually a nurse. We give it to patients with bad continued muscle spasms or pulled muscles that last more than a week. It can also be used to relieve bad daily headaches or migraines. It is also a controlled substance. You need to show your I.D before the pharmacy will give it to you and if that is not happening then your pharmacy needs to be reported!

Re: MercyHealthNurse (# 12) Expand Referenced Message

I'm a nurse as well and I'm not sure where you get your information but it is not a narcotic or a controlled substance it is simply a mild muscle relaxer. I've been on soma for 11 yrs which isn't a narcotic but is controlled. Please ask a pharmaceutical company before you post false information.

Re: bran (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

I have been taking tizanadine and tramadol both since the late 1996 Not straight thru just when I have my fibromyalgia symptoms. They work very well and I DO NOT get 'high' feeling or 'buzz', nor have I become addicted. And it is hard for me to believe it is addictive to people. I know that BOTH could be bought online as they weren't restricted and being a retired nurse was actually stunned when I heard they had changed. They are perfect for my problems and I don't have to limit driving and such while on it. I would like to know HOW it shows up as an opiate when it isn't. Anyway that's my knowledge on the subject.

Hmmm, what pharmacy do you use? I get my Tizanidine from CVS, Walgreens, and OptumRX and have never been asked to show ID.

There appears to be some confusion about the multiple ways that narcotics are defined...

First, there are opioids / opiates. Those are drugs such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, fentanyl, etc, that bind to your opioid receptors and relieve pain. Those are all narcotics.

However - the DEA uses a more broad definition of narcotics such as "a drug or other substance that affects mood or behavior and is consumed for nonmedical purposes, especially one sold illegally." ...

So ultimately, other classes of drugs can be considered as "narcotics" as well, even though they are not opiates. This may include benzodiazepines, muscle relaxers, etc.

Does that clear things up?
