Can the use of Depramil or Citalopram lead to tinnitus?

Yes, that can be a side effect of this medication, as reported by the U.S. FDA. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight gain.

How long have you been taking it? If it's been over 4 to 5 weeks and you're still experiencing it, you may need to switch to a different medication, with your doctor's approval.

Yes I have been taking it for some 6 months now (Depramil), though I understand that Depramil is a generic. When I started I took Auro Citalopram and I did not experience any bad side effects. Just recently (say 4 weeks or so) I have had 'vague' tinnitus. It is a quiet hum that I tend to forget when I am concentrating on work, but I am aware that it is there all the time. Thankfully right now it is not too unpleasant or interfering.

I am 65 and I wonder if this is a sign of the beginning of the loss of hearing rather than a side effect of medication? I will discuss this with my Doctor the next time I see him - I am a state patient and that will be in around 4 months time.

It could be that I should wean myself off this type of mediation too.
