Thrombosed Hemorrhoid - Will It Heal?

Updated

To sum up very quickly, this is a new problem that has been plaguing me for over a month and while it is manageable, I am curious as to whether being patient will pay off.

-In the first week, I was noticing discomforting throbbing from time to time on my right side and self diagnosed as an external hemmy and kind of ignored my diet at the time.

-In the second week I believe fried food and large amounts that led to large bathroom sessions, which is rare for me, exacerbated it and essentially it would just throb for a little after bowel movements while I iced it.

-Third week, discomfort was limited to only after bowel movements and sometimes during work shifts (I’m a bartender) but it eventually started feeling like it wasn’t bothering me

-Fourth week felt like I was in the clear and worked a double all day without any problems, but I ate very limited and had too much to drink that night. The next day I had a very dry bowel movement and felt a new pain in the left side rather than the right.

-To finish the summary, two small external hemorrhoid sacks were on the right side and just tend to swell up and down but have continued to decrease very slowly.

-The one on the left side is the only one bothering me and only becomes discomforting after bowel movements. HOWEVER, it has been bothering me for a few weeks now.

-The left one is thrombosed, it is the size of a pea or smaller and slightly blue with flesh tone but less so than a week or two ago.

The pain is not excruciating, just irritating and bowel movements kind of suck just as the stool first touches it but I’m able to finish fine and then it will throb off and on for a day more or two. But this has continued for at least 3 or 4 weeks, and sometimes it seems smaller after ice but typically feels like a hard pea right to the left outside the rectum. That’s the only place I feel it, not inside when I’ve checked.

Will the pain eventually subside and heal or am I going to have to get the clot lanced/professionally taken care of? It is much smaller than the majority of the ones I’ve read people suffering from, but I’m getting impatient and just want to know if a clot can be permanent or do they always resolve?

I can handle the discomfort if there’s hope.

I would suggest having it checked out by your doctor, you might need to have this surgically removed. If it is like a hard pea, it usually doesn't go away by itself.

I've had a child, so I have them, as well, but have never had one get hard like that. According to NIH studies, that is usually due to an internal twisting that cuts of the blood flow, and causes a blood clot. In many cases, they remove them, though I suggest only doing so, if it is absolutely necessary. Because the recovery period can be quite painful, though not as bad as the pain of letting this continue to get worse.

How are you doing, now? Has there been any change?

Thanks for the reply!

I agree with what you described and everything I have researched points to that as a thrombosed hemorrhoid. There’s a lot of forums and even official med sites I’ve read with contrasting information on whether they never go away or will be reabsorbed and naturally taken care of with proper diet and home care. The main takeaway is that it depends a lot on the pain level, and when it first started it was difficult to move on some days and had a wicked throb, especially after bms.

As of now and this week I started getting back to working out and yesterday and today did some leg work without any problems. There’s been some slight throbbing that comes and goes but for the most part it’s just an annoyance and most of the day it doesn’t bother me. Physically, the area doesn’t feel raw and I’m able to apply pressure without any pain. I can just feel that it’s there and it seems to only act up by occasion, and even when it does act up, I’m oddly still able to touch the area and it soothes. Ice has also worked wonders in reducing a bit of swelling. That’s the only reason I haven’t seen anyone is because there’s not been any bleeding and the pain has gotten more manageable since it had started. It’s just been taking a long time and I’m unsure of when I’ve officially or unofficially gone past the self healing point.

The methods I’ve been using are
-A sitz bath in warm water for 15-20 mins
-Followed shortly with ice for around the same length
-Sometimes some witch hazel
-Then usually a PH cream. I just recently got one with lidocaine and I’ve cycled the original and one with aloe.
-I take Advil only for when I’m on shifts

Thanks again!

Oh I meant to mention, it’s not really “hard” in the sense of material, but just has some density as a mini pea size ball.
I’ve read other nightmare forum experiences about descriptions of “walnut” and even “orange” ?? in regards to size and that severe pain commonly warranted surgery. No one has a good story on the pain of the postoperative experience.

UPDATE for anyone that stumbles in here looking for some answers.

So I certainly see why people get these things taken care of more often than they wait it out, the healing time is absolutely absurd. What a stupid aspect of our biology that this even happens. But yeah, I won’t be able to do this again. Two months is just ridiculous and if you’re reading this, just go see about it.

I’m not saying your body won’t heal a thrombosed hemorrhoid, but I am saying that the time it takes to heal will be one of the greatest tests of your threshold and patience to trust your own body and be disciplined in now you treat it. I also hear that certain surgeries are as bad or as worse, but I can’t attest to that.

It sounds like if you can just get a simple lance to absolve the clot then that’s the ticket, but again, there’s so many various accounts on this being successful or not.

But I digress and I’ve had my words with the universe over this.

The “pea” ball is maybe the half the size that it was and I can tell that my body is absorbing it, just very slowly. I can finally get back into my workouts with less problems, but there is continued spasms/throbbing after bowel movements and bowel movements are still slightly uncomfortable. I’ve tried some new things like aloe, apple cider vinegar ice, and even a concoction I made of coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic, and aloe.

Neither seemed to cause aggravation, but I did notice things shrink around the time I did this and I’m going to trial the methods again to see if one gives me more of a reaction than the other, or if that wasn’t just a natural aspect to it healing that would have occurred with or without natural ointment.

Other than that, I’m eating a bit more solidly and not having to put so much effort into staying soft which wasn’t really working that well anyway.

I will return for one more update upon the day that I can say it’s healed and give a detail on how long one small thrombosed hemorrhoid can take to self heal with home remedies if you’re like me and prefer to tough things out.
