my blood pressure used to be 150/90 or 140/90. The doctor prescribed me Telmisartan BP 40mg & Metoprolol Succinate USP 25 mg about 3 months back. After 2 months BP came down to 120/80 but, now for the last one week I am facing severe gas problem in stomach & chest. On 17/05/2011 evening I had severe pain and consumed fruit salt (ENO), Pantoprazole+ Itopride& also (Colinol) a pain killer for stomach ache. But, they did not prove to be useful at all. Now since 20/05/2011 I am having chest & stomach pain due to gas every day although I am taking "Pantoprazole 40 mg & Domperidone IP 30 mg but, I am not getting any relief from pain. Please suggest me whether it is a side effect of Telmisartan or Metoprolol Succinate?

In this case, it is more than likely being caused by the Metoprolol. It is well known to cause stomach pain and gas problems in some people.

When my doctor had me try it, it caused a similar problem for me and I had to switch to a different medication.

One important warning, though, do not just stop taking this medication. Due to its effects on the heart, a sudden cessation of it can cause elevated heart rate, which could lead to arrhythmia or heart attack.

A different medication that is in the same class, but isn't known to cause as many side effects is Carvedilol, so you may want to discuss it with your doctor.

Is there anything else I can help with?

My BP is 150/100, my age is 58 years. I was prescribed Amoldipine & Atenolol tabelets. I am taking above tablets since last 6 months. My BP has not improved much but with use of above I feel swelling in my feet. I also have gastric problem. Without using any medicine my BP was 140/95. Now I have been prescribed Telmisartan & Metoprolol Succinate ER tablets. Kindly suggest some remidial measures without side effects.

KLK, what else have you been doing to try to bring your blood pressure down?

You may want to make sure you avoid or cut down on anything that acts as a stimulant in the body, such as caffeine and nicotine, because they can elevate your blood pressure.

Lowering the sodium in your diet can also help, our bodies really only need about 500mgs in a day, yet most people take in way more than that. For some people, even a slight reduction can help.

Getting regular exercise is also a great way to help lower your blood pressure.

As to the medications you are on, now, the Metoprolol can also cause similar side effects to what you were already experiencing. You may not have any problems with it, but I just wanted you to know, so if you start having any problems, you know the likely culprit.

Does anyone else have any advice to add?

A doctor prescribed Telmisartan 20mg in addition to Stamlo 5mg, for a 45 year old patient, suffering from high blood pressure (150/90). And another doctor prescribed MET XL 25mg in addition to Stamlo 5 mg for the same patient. My doubt is that Telsmartin and MET XL are the same? And I'd like to find out if Telmisartan/MET XL can be stopped after reaching a normal B.P range (120/80)? Please reply.
