Tapering Off From 10mg?

Updated

I have been on Prednisone for 3 months, taking 10mg a day. It was not for a pain condition, but rather to aid and support pregnancy.
Now that I am 12 weeks pregnant, they are tapering me off. I am to go from 10mg to 5mg for a week, then 2.5mg for a week, then cease. I have been reading up on tapering and a LOT of people refer to dropping 1mg at certain intervals. Is going to 5mg then 2.5mg too fast?
I'm unsure whether other people who are dropping 1mg do so because they were on a higher dose initially, but I did wonder.....

Obviously i do not want to go into adrenal shock, particularly with the pregnanct. But I am also desperate to get off the Prednisone as well and have been counting the days to start tapering down.

Yes, it really depends on how high of a dose you were on and for how long.

For instance I'm on one now that's a short treatment course and it starts with 24mgs the first day and tapers over 6 days, so on the final one, I take 4mgs.

Learn more Prednisone details here.

However, given that you are pregnant and therefore legitimately concerned, please feel free to double check everything with your doctor. Better safe than sorry in such situations. I certainly did when I was pregnant, I double checked all medications and supplements.

And congratulations, I wish you the best of luck!

Is there anything else I can help with?

My Father (age 80 yrs) was put on wysolone 10 mg for 1 month for exfoliative dermatitis (erythroderma). His skin colour returned to normal in 1 month but due to reduced albumin levels, hie edema still persisted. Dr advised him to reduce the dosage to 5 mg for 10 days...and then 5 mg alternate days. Within 5-6 days of reducing to 5 mg, the redness returned, and edema reappeared on his face, elbows etc.
He continued with the 5 mg for 2 more days, and the flare up has begun to subside. Now he need to taper down the dose further. Will it be a better idea to make it 5 mg and 2.5 mg on alternate days instead of 5 and 0? And then 2.5 and 0...to finally 0?

I am worried if he goes without the 5 mg on alternate days, the flare up will happen again.
