Taking Hydrocodone For Depression (Page 2)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I am wondering if anybody else out there has taken Hydrocodone and noticed that symptoms of depression are alleviated? I find that many of today's anti-anxiety and antidepressant drugs come with unpleasant side effects, whereas while taking Hydrocodone they aren't there. The caveat to all of this is that yes, I know that Hydrocodone and opiates in general can be addictive. So long term use would result in withdrawal symptoms. I'm just wondering who else might agree with me on this?

Absolutely agree. Pain ruins life and is the cause if severe depression. But they keep trying to convince us that it’s the depression causing the pain! Wrong. They haven’t lived it! All lies. Quality of life is critical and chronic pain destroys it!

I understand what you are saying i really do but when your life is more than challenged by having depression and working at a better you or whatever it is that you do doesn't work well then your left to taking the one that will work for you. I guess you'd have to look at it at this point as a desperate plea for help just to feel better and will do what you have to for yourself otherwise no one else will.

Hi SLee.
Yes I experience the same thing and have even said something to my doctor a long time ago. I can't remember what he said but I had said how I wish they could come up with some kind of medication that mimics a pain medication for depression. I myself feel 'normal' when I took pain medication and is the very reason why im struggling today. Being 5 years clean from opiates which don't get me wrong im happy about it however im finding it much more difficult for me to lead a regular life. No im not suicidal whatsoever. Actually I have a real fear of death. What im having trouble with is my overall will for ambition. Its zero. My mind is fine I just can't seem to want to push myself. And after being like this for so long my muscles have become weak. Now its hard for me to stand for long periods of time or with my arms I can't lift certain things and the pain in my back has returned and now im really suffering. Im now at my wits end and don't want to be like this anymore....and is why I've been looking online for my original solution which means ill be going back to square one. And im fine with that. Actually I cant wait.

I have found that mood gets way better after a 5/325 hydrocodone. It works better than any antidepressant I’ve ever had. Even 1/2 the pill does wonders for my depression. That said, this is nothing I could ever tell my doctor! Probably one or two times a month I do this. I take the hydrocodone for severe arthritis....maybe once or twice a month. It sure makes me happy!

I asked my psychiatrist, since we know that oxycodone as well as certain illicit drugs boosts dopamine. Why isn’t a dopamine enhancer prescribed instead of antidepressants? He said, “That’s a good question.” Duh...

I know this is an old chat, but I have to reply!!! WHATEVER WORKS for depression; heroin works too, but I would not recommend it no more than Hydrocodone because they work exactly the same! You are not depressed because the narcotic tells your brain all is good --- until it isn't anymore. No dr will prescribe this for depression!

It makes sense. Pain comes first and ruins your life. Then comes depression! Take care of the pain and you won’t have depression, sleep problems, and many other things. The DEA and FDA are too stupid to know this and want to push the newest most expensive drugs that all have bad side effects!!! It’s BS

Of course but not for the reasons you seem to think. We who live in constant intractable pain can sometimes barely process information, get out of bed, be regular person without appropriate medication. For most of us, appropriate medication has been withheld for years as a result of the very fake "Opioid crisis". As a result, any one of us will likely find a great deal of joy should even NORCO be prescribed. I would be like Hanukkah had been declared every day for the rest of my life, only better, because I could only enjoy it if I had medication. Lastly, I must say that I was never a fan of NORCO but I would take it as a gift from God today and never ever complain about the loopy that it can cause. Indeed that is how the only drug that ever helped me was prescribed. I complained about not being able to function well and really disliking feeling stoned. My doctor gave me 20 mg of OxyContin. By the end of the first day, I knew it was a true and amazing gift from God. No high. Zero high.

Hey, Yeah taking Vicoden Hydrocodone for an antidepressant sounds very strange. It is for pain, But I guess it makes you feel better like it would if you suffer from pain like I do. I think that something else would be better than what you are taking now. Getting off of this drug, depending on how long u have been on it. You will go through with drawl, which will be awful. It should be done slowly. Good Luck

Hydrocodone is of course going to produce symptoms of euphoria if you are taking it for anything other than pain relief. If you take it and you’re not trying to alleviate pain that’s where the euphoric affects come out and that’s where addiction begins.. I was in a motorcycle accident when I was 19 years old that almost killed me. I had third and 4thdegree burns on both of my legs I was in a burn unit for 3 months and had multiple de-braiding surgeries on both legs; I had multiple broken bones which required multiple surgeries to implant titanium rods and nuts and bolts all over my body. I had a severe head injury which took over 200 staples and stitches to close not to mention having putting a titanium plate on my skull where it was fractured in four places.. it changed the path of my life forever in a matter of two minutes the rest of my life changed.. I am now a chronic pain patient I have been for the last 29 years and it is horrific.. obviously this was back long before there was this manufactured opiate crisis by disreputable doctors pharmaceutical companies just trying to make money. They’ve made literally BILLIONS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR... that in-turn has gotten the majority of the physicians out there afraid to write for narcotic pain medication anymore and when they do it is for very minimal amounts and unless you have a verifiable chronic serious long-term condition the way I have; it is now extremely difficult to obtain a prescription for any type of narcotic pain pill. although I am a chronic pain patient I also am also addicted and dependent on narcotic pain medication and I have been ever since that fateful day almost 30 years ago..Because when your taking narcotic pain relievers FOR ANY REASON FOR MORE THAN A WEEK OR TWO YOUR AUTOMATICALLY HOING TO DEVELOP AN ADDICTION TOO IT NO MATTER WHAT.. THAT IS A MAJOR SIDE EFFECT FROM THIS CLASS OF DRUGS.. I take a combination of medications every day and I will for every day the rest of my life. I have found that medications like hydrocodone Dilaudid morphine fentanyl (your everyday commonly prescribed medications for different types and levels of severity of pain) used to have me in such a fog that I could not function.. I actually got arrested for driving under the influence of legally prescribed medication back in 1998 and they actually sentenced me too 2 years in California State Prison!!

An example of things I couldn’t do while under the influence of my Cronic Pain medications aside from driving my truck or my motorcycle; I couldn’t cook dinner because I might burn the house down due to the fog of the medication.. I couldn’t have a job because I never knew how I was going to feel on any given day. Household chores became an issue as well.. It basically affected literally my entire existence which in turn made me so depressed and unhappy and feeling so isolated because I couldn’t make plans for a month from now to maybe go see a concert or something because I never know if I’m going to be sick or in too much pain on the day of whatever event I wanted to go to is.. it affected my marriage as well... about 15 years ago my chronic pain management physician told me about methadone. He suggested that I switch over to methadone as my main pain control medication with of course having back up meds for “breakthrough pain” Methadone is long acting. You only need to take it once a day (Or twice a day depending on how many milligrams you were taking per day sometimes you take half and 12 hours later you take the other half of your daily amount) It will take probably upwards of 1 to 3 weeks for them to get the right dosage; either up or down and once you find the right combination that works for you it is life-changing and incredible.. it relieves my pain enough to where I can function again as a normal human being as a wife; as a mother and as a daughter who is helping to take care of my mother who is sadly dying from Alzheimer’s and dementia right now. I am legally allowed to drive on it because it does not give you a euphoric effect. Granted I have to take a very high dosage because when you have taken heavy duty schedule 2 narcotic pain medication/opiates for as many years as I had too after my devastating motorcycle accident you will automatically develop a very high tolerance to them or to any medication and you have to take massive quantities/milligrams to get the same effect as taking one or two.. I seriously used to be a hypocrite about methadone.. I used to think that it was just for heroin junkies and that it got into your bones and had all of these negative side-effects on a persons body.. I am not a person that uses street drugs at all.

In high school and in my early 20s sure I tried cocaine once-or twice... I tried methamphetamine once. I had an occasional drink or alcohol in social settings, but I did not like how illicit drugs made me feel and I never did them again and I haven’t had a drink of alcohol in probably 26 years now because mixing that with my prescribed medicines you can easily overdose and die when you mix alcohol with prescription drugs and I was never a big drinker to begin with.. The only street drug or illegal drug at least back then that I used on a daily basis was marijuana. When it became legal I am mediately became a medical marijuana patient and began growing my own strain specific.. I wound-up taking my little “hobby” and made it into a profitable business legally. I am a legal vendor with the state of California. I have all of my paperwork and I fortunately did all this prior to the law being changed allowing it legal recreationally for anyone over 21 years old just like alcohol, because now too obtain the permits and the certifications that I hold it is very difficult process for newcomers and there’s a very long waiting. So now instead of just growing enough to supply myself and a few of my fellow chronic pain patients that are my friends and donating a significant amount to disabled veterans every harvest; I’ve also learned how to make edibles how to make “ canna butter” how to make “Tincture” and several other things with a very simple machine called “Magical Butter Machine” that retails between roughly $174.00 thru $99.00 depending upon the current sales and discounts which they always offer. I’m able to utilize the entire plant ”Not just the Buds” generally you use the trim from your harvest to make these concentrates which is very economical and costs next to nothing to make at home in your very own kitchen.. granted there are dozens of marijuana dispensaries popping up in cities all over the United States where it is legal either recreationally or for medical marijuana patients that have a very large inventory of a myriad of different types of products that you can purchase these days it’s almost become a boutique industry.. I sell my excess pounds of Buds to the licensed dispensaries here in Santa Cruz California where I live. I also sell my excess “Trim” to a company that makes concentrated vaporized cartridges. I also sell my excess ”Clones” (A Cloned Marijuana Plant is when you take cuttings / branches off of the plants when they are in the vegetative state before you do the flip and begin the flowering process and you take these little stalks if you will and there is a machine that you purchase where within two weeks each individual stalk/ cutting will develop an entire route system and become an entire new plant with the exact same genetics of whichever particular strain that you are growing.. The machine can make 74 clones at a time and however many extra ones that I’m not going to grow for myself I also sell to the dispensaries here in Santa Cruz whom in turn sell said clones to the public. Just from the profit from selling the clones; that pays for the entire overhead of my grow which is indoors; inside of a specialized tent with lights and exhaust systems and everything you could think of and a regular cycle from sapling to harvest is about 9/10 weeks. Nowadays there are so many different types of “Strain Specific” varieties which treat every symptom you can think of INCLUDING DEPRESSION that have absolutely no negative side effects especially the kind that you would get by taking hydrocodone or any other type of narcotic pain reliever and I would strongly suggest that you look into using this instead of using hydrocodone for depression or as an antidepressant because that is not what it is designed for and acetaminophen which is always mixed into hydrocodone seriously damages your liver, kidneys gallbladder intestines and your pancreas tremendously..

there are also the famous CBD STRAINS that help people that suffer from epilepsy seizures Parkinson’s disease and a myriad of other terrible conditions that people suffer from where traditional medication does not really help especially with children where CBD Strains tremendously helps the quality of their daily life.. there are also a myriad of different types/amounts of CBD and or THC that you can choose from so if you don’t want the THC affect you don’t have to have it; however I would personally recommend at least to begin with trying one that’s at least half and half CBD and THC.. ALSO BE ADVISED: DO NOT EVER TELL YOUR DOCTOR OR ANY OTHER DOCTOR OR SPECIALIST OR AN EMERGENCY ROOM DOCTOR THAT YOUR TAKING HYDROCODONE FOR DEPRESSION BECAUSE THEY WILL NEVER EVER EVER NEVER EVER GIVE YOU ANOTHER PRESCRIPTION FOR IT OR ANY OTHER NARCOTIC PAIN RELIEF MEDICATION AGAIN AND THEY WILL PUT IT INTO YOUR PERMANENT MEDICAL RECORDS THAT WILL FOLLOW YOU AROUND FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!! I’M NOT BEING OVERLY DRAMATIC IN MY DESCRIPTION HERE.. I AM 100000% SERIOUS. NOW THAT THERES AN OPIATE EPIDEMIC DUE TO MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF OVER PRESCRIBING OXYCONTIN/ OXYCODONE WHICH HAS CREATED A HORRIFIC NATIONAL CRISIS THAT HAS LED TOO THOUSANDS OF OVERDOSE DEATHS AND A SERIOUS HEROIN CRISIS BECAUSE ONCE THE GOVERNMENT DETERMINED THAT DOCTORS HAD BEEN OVER PRESCRIBING THESE DRUGS THEY HAVE CLAMPED DOWN BIGTIME. NOW EVERY SINGLE STATE HAS A PRESCRIPTION DRUG MONITORING PROGRAM CALLED A “CURAS REPORT” WHICH SHOWS EVERY PRESCRIPTION WRITTEN/ FILLED TO WHOM AND AT WHAT PHARMACY. THEIR LOOKING FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE RECEIVING MULTIPLE SCRIPTS FROM MULTIPLE DIFFERENT DOCTORS AND HAVE MADE IT A FELONY CRIMINAL OFFENSE AND PEOPLE ARE LITERALLY BEING SENT TO STATE PRISON ALL OVET THE COUNTRY FOR DOCTOR SHOPPING AND WHATNOT. SO IT MADE PEOPLE WHO HAD BECOME ADDICTED TO OPIATE PAIN PILLS TURN TO HERION BECAUSE THEY COULD NO LONGER OBTAIN THE PRESCRIPTIONS FROM THEIR DOCTORS.. THAT IN TURN HAS RUINED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLES LIVES AND TAKEN THOUSANDS IF LIVES FROM ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSES AND SUCIDE… ESPECIALLY IN THE AGE RANGE/ GROUPS OF 15 THROUGH 26 YEARS OLD WHO STARTED TAKING/ STEALING THEIR PARENTS PRESCRIPTIONS AND USING THEM TO PARTY/EUPHORIA AND WERE SELLING THEM TO THEIR FRIENDS AND WHEN THE DEA CLAMPED-DOWN AND BEGAN SERIOUSLY MONITORING THE AMOUNTS OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS BEING PRESCRIBED SO THEY TURNED STRAIGHT TO HEROIN…

This in turn has made the majority of physicians extremely afraid and cautious to prescribe any type of pain medicine or benzodiazepines like Valium TOO ANYONE AT ALL EVEN VERIFIED PATIENTS LIKE MYSELF because they’re afraid of losing their license and therefore their income.. especially the new doctors.. The young generation that is just starting out or has been practicing medicine for a very short period of time 4/7 years or less Who think that they know everything and the patients like myself who have been dealing with a multitude of chronic and repairable conditions which require narcotic pain medications.. now I switched over to methadone long before all of this oxyContin /opiate crisis happened.. I did it for the reasons which I stated above and I do still get a limited amount of Dilaudid for days when my pain levels are very high and I need something strong in the moment however I have a written contract with my pain specialist physician for all three of the medications that he prescribes me.. I take 10 mg of Valium daily 5 mg in the morning and 5 mg at night.. I take 215 mg of methadone a day.. 100 in the morning and 115 in the evening.. and for breakthrough pain I have Dilaudid 8 mg tablets which he gives me quantity 20 a month. Honestly though A lot of the time I do not need all of the Dilaudid (or I don’t take all of the 20 pills a month) however I do keep receiving or filling the prescription every single month because I’m always in fear that somethings going to happen and I won’t be able to get them so I just I don’t I guess stockpile the ones that I don’t take any given month I keep them in a safe literally a gun safe in my home so I will have them on hand if and when I need them.. it is a very sad state what doctors are doing to people like us.. I’ll because of people that do not have serious chronic medical injuries that cause them to live in agony every single moment of their lives and especially for people like me who have had over 26 different surgeries to put all kinds of rods and nuts and bolts and plates into my body to hold my skeleton together including my skull all because of people that do not have serious chronic medical injuries that cause them to live in agony every single moment of their lives and especially for people like me who have had over 26 different surgeries to put all kinds of rods and nuts and bolts and titanium plates into my body to hold my skeleton together; including my skull, my neck and back, my right shoulder, my left hip and my right knee and lastly my right ankle.. I set off metal detectors in airports and anywhere else they have them!! I’m not kidding and it’s not funny.. anyway I hope that this was helpful to you or is giving you some things to think about showing you you have other choices and that taking hydrocodone for depression is a very very very bad idea.

Hello all, the reason that people feel better when taking Vicodin or similar Meds is because they directly affect the brain, among other things.. And no, I'm NOT saying that's a bad thing! Quite the opposite actually.. I personally use Fiorinal off label for the exact same thing! I have tried damn near every single" Antidepressant" that is made, and truefully, after 20 + year's of taking them, I STILL have yet to find one that works as it should!!

Of course, it’s the best antidepressant in the world. It just has side effects like any other opiate. Subutex is the only one that works for long term use without any side effects. At least for me, cuz norco, perc, oxy, etc, all make me wake up every morning like I had the flu.

YES!! To S Lee & everyone else who said that hydrocoone helped alleviate their depresion!

My son has also suffered from severe clinical depression for about 10 years & after awhile the traditional antidepressants' good effects wear off & don't work so well anymore...but hydrocodone does & I told him to mention this to a psychiatrist but I believe then the psychiatrist will look at him side eye & then take away his small amount of xanax (3 -- 0.25 mg tabs/day) Crazy.

Hydrocodone is a pain med, also know as Vicodin . I am surprised your DR is giving you that as a anti depressant. So this is a first I have heard of this.

First off I want to say, I hope you are well. I hope you have found and can grasp something that ties you strong enough to this earth you cannot severe it to tap out. The feeling very well and the cord that keeps me is my children as they'd have absolutely nothing or nobody without me. Find yours, hold it dearly.

I'm not sure what will come of this "epidemic" I have always been sensitive to others needs, but clearly this hits home. I had intense dental work and was first told to take Advil. I got the Norco which helped and soothed the pain. I save the rest for when I can use and take when most needed. Scary it's so scarce now. But they want us to consume cannabis. I had an anxiety attack and really had to pull over to stop from thinking about wrecking. When I use the Norco, I level off and come up with a plan. I take for a few days then tape off and live normally, I only need sometimes to get me through a tough time. I've supplemented with alcohol, but can't keep that up, nor do I want to. I will have to resort to more intense work out beatings/long runs and risky thrills to fulfill that void.

Re: elizabeth (# 6) Expand Referenced Message

I know your post is old, but I do hope you OR someone else reads my reply to your reply!! Anyway, I am a 28 year old female. When I was just a month away from turning 16 years old ((right before I was SUPPOSED to get my license!! Imagine that! Figures huh? Lol!)) I was in a very bad car accident, which I actually DID die in. They brought be back to life of course, but I was in a coma for 3 months!! It was bad! So I’m sure you can imagine what that did to my body. I suffer from brain damage due to it today, and will for the rest of my life, because of a very bad head trauma. But anyway, my family did not let the doctors give me meds to take when I went home, unfortunately! Even when I DID need them!! So I had to wait until I was an adult and on my own feet to finally see a doctor about it. Finally when I was 22 years old, I was referred to a pain management doctor. It took me awhile to get the medication I desperately needed & I had to do many, many tests that the doctor ordered me to do. Plus a ton of physical therapy! But I did absolutely everything I had to do in order to please the doctor & to prove to him that is was in fact the truth!! Of course, I was given the lowest amount of hydrocodone at first, which is understandable!, but over the years I gradually moved up in MG. Then, due to my body becoming immune basically to the MGs I was on, I now also suffer from restless legs. So now I am also on Gabapentin before bed time as well. I’m not found of the Gaba’s either because they literally make you feel drunk or zombified AND it’s sooooo difficult to walk! WOW!! ((Wanted to give you my whole story first, sorry!!))

But anyway, YES! YES!! YES!!! It ABSOLUTELY helps you with depression as well!!! Which I ALSO suffer from & have my entire life!! SOOOOO! Not only did I get the pain relief I DESPERATELY NEEDED!!, I ALSO got something, in THE SAME medication! that helped with my depression as well!! Killed two birds with one stone there!! So yes! There SHOULD be more research done about other ways to use the medication as well! And I do pray that someone does the research! The only problem with that is.....Some people would overdo it! But in my opinion, as long as the patient is using the medication AS DIRECTED!!, it could be used for both! There comes in the TRUST between doctor & patient, ya know?? But if the patient can be trusted, as I am with my doctor, then I think it should be aloud. But before that, the research & testing has to be done unfortunately. I hope all is well with everyone on here!
I know this post & replies are years old but I do pray for FOR YOU ALL in your physical & mental health!! And hope you get to read my words to you!
