Tramadol Withdrawal Side Effects

Updated

My husband takes Tramadol for pain. It has caused him to be depressed. He is now addicted to the drug can't function without it, and he is always angry or agitated at everything around him. He can't keep food down and can't sleep. He has tried to stop taking it but is now a down hill depressed state.

Well unfortunately our bodies can become dependent upon anything that we take regularly for a long period of time, anything from your morning orange juice to a cup of milk with dinner. There is a big difference between addiction and dependence though. To be addicted he would have to be abusing the drug, taking it more than prescribed and going to extreme measures to get more.

Now the problem with dependence is that while the withdrawals are not as severe as addiction, you do suffer some and that is apparently what he is going through.

This is a non-narcotic med, but his body is still used to having it and if he stops taking it abruptly, then he will suffer problems.

Either you or your husband need to speak to his doctor about this problem, they can support or treat the other conditions he is suffering from both while using it and help him to taper off of it if he needs to stop taking it altogether.

Neurontin is Gabapentin, this was originally approved as a med to help prevent Epileptic seizures, however it has been found to help some people with certain types of never pain such as post-herpetic neuralgia and similar conditions.

As to the Tramadol, if he has been on a high dose for a long time, it can do this, almost any drug can if you have been on a high dosage for a long time and try to stop without tapering off.

Tramadol is a synthetic opiate. It is considered non narcotic but works on the same receptors a releases serotonin.
I know personally that you WILL grow dependent with long term use and the withdrawls from it are the SAME as withdrawal from any opiate medication such as Vicodin lortab norco etc.

It has a longer half life and is less likely to be abused which is why docs are a bit more free with it. Don't be fooled!

Tramadol - highly addictive, gives you a false sense of happiness and can make your life hell. I am currently in the middle of getting of tramadol as I can not go a day without it, after been suscribed for a bad back 2 years ago. at first it made me feel as though i had a new meaning of life, like i could achieve anything and made me feel so happy i felt as long as i had the tramadol i could get on with my day. I was then up to 11 a day from 6-8 a day because the effects starting wearing of and i needed to take more. i then became ill and realised with tests i had more enzymes on my liver than normal, not to serious but can be if i keep taking the tablets. i have also developed stomach ulcers from taking tramadol this gave me a wake up call and i realised i had to come of the tablets soon. the only problem was i couldn't, i experienced hallucinations, flu like symptoms were i would roll around in my bed and cry in pain, i felt worthless, i had no energy i couldn't even bear to get out of bed and wash myself, eat, or socialize, the list goes on. i am now on 4 tablets a day with help from a drug specialist and a counsellor. i go to the chemist once a week to pick up my 28 tablets and its really hard not to take more than 4 when they are there, several times i have took more and have been left short until my next script and have experienced the upper symptoms. my life is alot different prior to the tramadol, i dont work now i dont have much of a social life and the tension between me and my partner is unbearable because i am severly depressed because of this. i know tramadol will effect different people differently but i know tramadol is a highly addictive drug through my own experiences and others. ur husband need professional help he needs to tell his doctor he is addictive to this. my relationship is nearly ruined over this drug dont let it be to late for u and ur husband

Tramadol is very addicting. I was prescribed for a cyst in my testicle and when I had it surgically removed I could not stop. I started buying 100 100mg Caps and I'm up to 25 or so a day which is 50 50mg.. I was surprised at how I can even survive that. This is a dangerous drug for sure !!! It gets you out of nowhere. Once I became addicted I take them just to be normal.

I am taking suboxone to get off tramadol after 7yrs I was depressed, a mess and up to 20 tablets a day, the suboxone has helped me feel normal and get off the tramadol! Getting off of it alone after being on it for so long is very very dangerous!

I think what is happening is after 4 years my body when stopping cold turkey feels like it will die without them. Almost like when we need food, only worse. It's become part of me now. I hope I can get off them. It started out FUN and now it's a pain in the butt.

Do not take tramadol while you are intoxicated (drunk) or taking any of the following:

alcohol or street drugs;

narcotic pain medicine;

sedatives or tranquilizers (such as Valium);

medicine for depression or anxiety; or

medicine for mental illness (such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia).

Oh yes it does do that!! Talk to one of the several thousands of addicts and they will tell you that not on,y are the withdrawals awful, but tramadol also contains an antidepressant element that causes the user to become depressed as they ween off or stop taking it cold turkey. It didn't do that to YOU because you probably take very little or haven't been on it long. You shouldn't tell someone that a drug "doesn't do" something until you research it.

I AM AN RN AND I TAKE TRAMADOL. OCCASSIONALLY WHEN THE PAIN IN MY BACK IS NOT THAT BAD FOR A COUPLE WEEKS ------I TRY TO WEAN MY SELF OFF OR DOWN TO ONLY 2 PILLS A DAY.----------WITHDRAWAL IS REALLLLLYYYYYY BADDDD!!!!!! ITS WORSE THAN VICODIN.-------I WAS TAKING 6 VICODIN A DAY FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS ------AND IT WAS EASIER THAN COMING OFF TRAMADOL------BECAUSE TRAMADOL HAS A SERATONIN UPTAKE------LIKE PROZAC WHICH IS AN ANTI DEPRESSANT WHICH HELPS UR BRAIN-----NOT RECOGNIZE THE PAIN AS MUCH AND STAYS IN UR SYSTEM LONGER THAN A NARCOTIC LIKE CODEINE/VICODIN/OXY ETC..... THUS COMING OFF TRAMADOL TAKES LONGER AND IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF POSSIBILITY OF SEIZURE.--------------DETOX SHOULD BE SLOW OVER 4-8 WEEKS. E.G. U TAKE 8 PILLS A DAY. START TAKING 7 PILLS FOR 5-7 DAYS, THEN 6 PILLS FOR 5-7 DAYS ETC..... THEN TOWARDS THEN END U MAY HAVE TO CUT THE PILLS IN HALF AND TAKE 1/2 PILL EVERY 12 HOURS AT THE VERY END-------THEN STRETCH IT OUT TO 1/2 PILL EVERY 24 HRS. THEN 1/4 PILL AT THE VERY VERY END EVERY 24 HRS FOR A COUPLE DAYS---THEN NOTHING.

Tramadol is relatively safe medicine more specifically for neuropathic pains .I am taking 2 X 50 mg tablets for my severe muscle injury after heart attack last year.I was also getting addicted and hence tried this Trick and It works.
I take Half the tablet when feel the pain and rest 1/2 keep in the pocket. I tell my brain that I have taken full tablet and visualise with MEDITATION that pains are reduced. And GOD helps me and all of Us to reduce the suffering.Of course , i am controlling diet, doing exercise fairly regularly and most important trying to reduce attachments by one sentence written on White Board in front of me--NOW ONLY 8 DAYS ARE LEFT FOR MY EARTHLY LIFE--God Bless All--thanks

Tramadol didn't do that- to YOU. If you'd researched it a little, you would find out that thousands of people have that same exact reaction when quitting tramadol, so saying its not the tramadol is irresponsible and flat-out wrong. You should do more research on every drug you take, because tramadol IS very addictive and it's an ssri that acts as an anti depressant. That means abrupt discontinuation WILL often lead to feeling depressed. Don't assume your experience is the only experience!

Why would you even bother responding to this?? Clearly you have no clue what tramadol is, nor do you have any knowledge of bipolar disorder. Plus, you spell "your" "yer" and are barely coherent. When are uneducated people with no clue what they're talking about going to stop annoying people with very real health concerns?? Go back to 6th grade English and stay there.

Suboxone will cure him within days. Only certain doctors can perscribe it. It will take the withdrawls away and he will feel better in about 24 hours. You put it under you tongue and within minutes you feel its effects. They use it to wean people off opiates, heroin etc. I take it, but it blocks your opiate receptors so you cant abuse opiates. If you want more info. feel free to contact me.

I tried tramadol once. I was taking oxycodone already for back pain, I got hit by a car and was in hospital and rehab for 2 weeks, I asked my pain doctor if I could take more oxycodone for extra pain caused by car hitting me, I tried one tramadol xr and it made me really sick.

Get him to take Kratom and he will be able to reduce his tramadol and withdrawal. You can put it in a drink (non-alcohol) or take it teaspoonful. The Red Maend Da is the best for opioids withdrawal. He'll be able to slowly wean off tramadol and be feeling good with kratom at the same time. It's healthy and won't hurt him and will give him a good feeling.

Oh my gosh that is exactly like my story with my tramadol. I've been on them for 17 years. I know exactly what you are talking about. The withdrawls are making me feel i wish i were dead instead of feeling this way. I also take more and run out at the end of the month. I feel like im dying when i'm out. I didnt know anyone else got this way too. A dr in vegas laughed at me and said you cant get addicted to ultram ! BUT I AM AND ARENT STRONG ENOUGH TO TAPER MYSELF OFF PLUS I NEED THEM FOR MY DISC DISEASE ! Can anyone help me ??

I was so relieved to read your story and find this site, it brought tears to my eyes. Bless everyone of you who shared your experience. I feel stronger knowing that its NOT JUST ME. I take two a day, but when i run out i sneeze horribly (wth, right?), i'm hot and cold, and have zero energy. Doc prescribed them for light arthritis about 5 years ago. Did nothing for pain, but i felt so happy and lighthearted with them, so much so that i didn't even care about the pain. It's scary to realize that I have a problem and I can't tell anyone. I am working up the courage to tell my therapist, which might explain the unexplained seizures that come twice a year. Again, thank u Zio10 and good luck :)

Bulls*** to the person that said he'd have to be abusing them. You do not have to abuse them to get angry and addicted. Tramadol has givin me two grand mal seizures. I never abused. And yes it can make a person feel like there right all the time and be mean. Just to be clear he doesn't have to abuse the pill to have normal reactions. Best thing to do is go to a pain management specialist.

I actually take Suboxone on a daily basis for some time now, as well as an antidepressant. My doctor prescribed me Tramadol today for an impacted wisdom tooth. You say NOT to take Tramadol with the above meds? My Doc knows I'm on these meds but still prescribed them to me. Any suggestions?

Hello. Tramadol addict here. I took 50mg Tramadol pills for about 7-8 yrs. At first it was great. Helped with tibial stress fracture an fibromyalgia an one herniated disc an degenerative disc disease in L4-5, L5-S1. Took it on an off. Found after taking it on off when on was feeling great. Happy no anxiety felt like supermom. Im in medical field to. So about 5 yrs ago started taking up to 8 a day then that didnt do it so took more. My body an brain wanted it. Anyway ended up taking 20-25 a day an getting off internet. Expensive. 300$ a month. I tried to back off but withdrawals are like your in hell. Not just physically but mentally. Finally God answered my prayers to get off this drug. It was ruining my life. I had become a recluse. Was very outgoing an sociable. Yelled alot. I have 2 sons an a husband. Had quit working before the 20-25 a day started. So now costing us money we didnt have. I knew I couldn't get a job due to drug panels. An when Id run out waiting for Fedex to get here I couldn't function fr withdrawals. Withdrawls are, for me where, flu like feeling, restless legs bad! No sleep, runny nose, sneezing all time, ddiaherra, frequently urinating, depressed, agitated. I was hell. This drug is VERY addictive for the rt person. For me it was. An I know why. I studied a little on it. It has antidepressant an anti-anxiety properties to it. I had an abortion at 23. Felt like a horrible person for that. I worry all time. Got married then we lost our 2nd child a girl in 2000 I was 31yrs.old. then had a miscarriage 3 mnths later. We then tried one more time an had our 2nd son jn 2002. Then I went back to work at hospital 2 yrs later. Then yr later had tibial stress fracture. Had constant pressure mentally to be the perfect worker, daughter, mother an husband was recovering alcoholic. But started drinking again in 2008 off an on so that made me think well he has his fun so why cant I have happiness to? So started taking Tram more often. Finally it got bad an I would pray for help getting off. At that time I wasn't working for 5 yrs. To help my parents (elderly) an pickup kids, etc. No insurance either. Husband self employed. So it was becoming expensive and I knew I was hurting myself inside. So in May of 2014 I became ill with Adnovirus. Its like flu or strepp but diagnostics come up neg for it. Got it fr my 11 y.o. I started having palpitations an skipped heart beat. I was scared to death an thought I had a heart problem from all the Tramadol I took.

So finally after 3 days of this I couldn't take anymore an begged my husband to take me to ER. No insurance remember. He was reluctant. It was going to be expensive. But I forced him to take me. They did every blood diagnostic known to God on me an cardiac enzymes along with CT of upper an lower to make sure no bloodclots. Not anemic. No thyroid probs. A high whitecell count but I was sick with adnovirus. So ER doc said how much Tramadol do you REALLY take? I was humiliated. I had worked in that same hospital for over 10 yrs. I confessed. I was tired of keeping this horrible secret. He said ur having either Tram withdrawals or heart cant take that much Tramadol. You have to stop. So prescribed Clonazepam (Klonapine generic) for the anxiety fr quitting. I ended up going into detox for 5 days. Told my family an friends, who I had basically snubbed due to the pills an never agreed to see them when they came to town, & was crying about it to them apologising over an over. My Mom paidfor detox,1,800$ an was put on KKlonapine while in there 3 x a day.Thats a diff story. Benzodiazepines. Im currently tapering off it cause its the devil. I'll be off Klonapine by Middle of Nov. An was only on it since May at 1mg pill 2x aday sometimes 1 a day. Now on .5mg pills since Sept. An started tapering fr 2 .5mg pills to now on equivalent of 3/4 of a pill. Benzo's are no joke either. Horrible withdrawals if you go to fast. I can only go down 1/4 of pill every 10 days.

Back to Tramadol. After got out detox was ok. Remember I was Klonapine about 2 or 1 a day. Then saw a N.P. at a clinic I was referred to cause of no insurance. She starts me on Zoloft (this is 2 wks after getting out of detox) everything ok until mnth later. Horrible toxicity fr. Zoloft or combining it with occasional Klonapine. Was told to taper of Klonapine when started Zoloft. Horrible diaherra, joints hurt, lost 15 lbs in 2 1/2 mnths on Zoloft liver enzymes went fr normal to low 50's. Flu like symptoms. Was told to just stop it cause I was only "on a baby dose of 50 mg". But coming fr med field I knew you dont just stop antidepressants. So fast weaned off in two wks. Hell also. Crying all time horrible fatigue, etc. Still was taking Klonapine. This is around Aug 30 last Zoloft. Then Sept 15 started Klonapine taper. Its been hell since May all because of my addiction to Tramadol. After I get Klonapine out of me, I will see how I am an if needed will get on a diff antidepressant, not Zoloft. Wasn't for me. Maybe Prozac? Anyone post- tramadol dealing with depression or anxiety or vision problems. Oh yeah, I cant hardly see now. Need 275 glasses fr Walmart to read an cant see tv to good. Planning on going to eye dr. Scared Im going blind now. Any responses would be appreciated. An hope I helped someone to get help getting off Tramadol if taking high doses like I was. You probably cant do it by yourself. No shame in asking for help. It shows your strong an smart! I go to NA an a "celebrate recovery" at a church Iv started to go to. An went to a therapist to see why I abused in first place. Cognitive behavior therapy. An exercise helps. Drink lots water. Helping others to helps you. But again has anyone had to go on an antidepressant after several months off Tramadol? Thanks for letting me share this!

I have been taking tramadol for two years along with Vicodin for a neck injury. I am supposed to take it 3xs a day but, I take only half of the Vicodin in the morning and the other half at night. I take only 1 tramadol in the morning and only 1 at night. I'm doing well. Do not abuse it because you don't feel as good as the first two months you were taking it. Take it only for pain. You will be ok.

Ryan, sounds like a false reading. No, that isn't a compound in tramadol of any dosage.
