Switching From Brand Name Dilantin To Generic

Updated

I can't afford insurance under Obamacare, and I lost my Medicaid last December because the governor vetoed it's expansion. I've been taking Dilantin since 1967. When generics came out, my doctor warned me not to switch from the brand name Dilantin to the generic. I have not had a seizure since 1988 and my doctor always said if I switch to the much cheaper generic, there's a possibility it may not be as effective and the seizures could return. He told me this several times, the last time about 7 - 8 years ago. Last fall when I told him i was losing Medicaid, he suggested I switch to the generic. When I reminded him he had told me not to do that, he said that was years ago and that switching would "probably" be ok now. "Probably". I don't like that. I'm wondering if it would be safe to switch or if he just said that becaue the generic is cheaper. Has anyone here switched from the brand name Dilanton to the generic, or know of anyone who has? If so, what was the result?

Help, Jaque! How are you?

Actually, generics have been much closer regulated and much safer since 1984. So, your doctor is right, there isn't much of a chance that you'll have a problem. There can be some slight fluctuations in the amount of the active ingredient, but they do have to be proven to be just as effective and to be therapeutically equivalent to the name brand.

Is there anything else I can help with?

To Sickstress: What is a lie? In May Verwon posted there should be no problems. Is that what you're saying is a lie, or is it my earlier post about my doctor's comment that there should be no problems switching to a generic?
