Sudden Dextroamphetamine Price Quadruple???? (Page 2)

Updated

What happened? Oh, no... I am f+#*ed. Went to Walgreens to fill dextroamph rx tonight. Instead of approx. $75 they said for me with self-pay it's $355+!!!! This is for ONE month. No way I can afford it! Suddenly? What the _ do I do? Taper down with the 2 more days of pills that I have? So, you just blow, they are saying to me. Just be sick, and here, we'll make it so you're much, much sicker!!!

Are all the pharmacies going to have the same astronomical price hike? Has anyone got information about about this?

I take the 10 mg tablets and at the end of February the price had quadrupled. I called around and found Walmart to be significantly cheaper but it was still $160.

Thanks everyone for the info on the FTC and Vyvanse. It is helpful just to know that I'm not alone.

I want to clarify what we are complaining about to the FTC; it looks like Teva is based in Israel so I'm not confident that an FTC complaint would affect them. Also, some of you have noted that it is the pharmacy who controls the price, and not the drug company.

I want to make sure we are coordinated in our efforts!

Sarah - If Teva is doing business in the USA they are bound to FTC oversight weather or not they are are a foreign based entity.

Also, Teva most certainly does control medication pricing. According to this document (linked from Google): hdsmith.com/mediafiles/novation-newsletter-august-2012.pdf

Teva raised the price it was charging, to the distributor, from $25 per 100 to $192 per 100. The rest is markup from the distributor and drug store. This represents an increase of 668% in ONE MONTH!

Do you work for Teva???

SAME THING JUST HAPPENED TO ME!!! Usually pay $68-$70 for 120. Walgreens on Thurs. 12/13 $249!!! I was so angry and didnt know what to do - it's crazy!! Try GoodRx. They had coupons & MUCH lower prices. You may have to plan ahead-either order it before you run out, (which us ADD folks never seem to do), or call around, but it's worth it!! I was dumb enough to pay the $ before researching. But I had none left. BOO WALGREENS!!

Further to my previous reply, here is action currently being taken against Teva, by the FTC:

fdalawblog.net/fda_law_blog_hyman_phelps/2012/10/no-ag-agreements-are-anticompetitive-says-the-ftc-for-a-second-time.html

Please keep filing complaints if you are affected. Don't let Teva's ham-fisted attempts at concern trolling PR dissuade you.

Same story here and with a new twist, my Medicare plan D supplier, Humana, has required a prior-auth. for more than #60 p/m. All this out of the blue. I asked my friendly pharmacist whether this was connected to REMS (Risk Evaluation Management Strategy) and she told me that if it wasn't that they would have come up with something else. They are really tightening the screws on Class IIs. Best of luck . . . Q

All Dex-amph users should try goodrx.com for their self printed coupon prices, I just checked and #30 10 mg dex/amph were around $55 for #30. Best of luck. BTW, GoodRx is trustworthy and it even provides you with a google map to your nearest pharm that accepts their coupon.

may i ask for those taking this and these pharma prices, are u using any type of insurance, medicare, medicaid, or a pharmacy discount program? i just can't imagine these pills could be that expensive!! dextroamphetamine are no longer available in anything other than generic and there is nothing that special about them as far as anything that might make them a more costly med. I am dumb founded to hear this. i got these a month or 2 last year when my normal Rx was not to be found, and i paid $5 for a 30 day supply. it is not fair or right for anyone to have to pay what i see some of you were asked to pay. TEVA MAKES ENOUGH MONEY, THIS IS A DISGRACE!!! I work for a small pharma company so i truly have an interest here, and it's very disheartening to hear this deplorable news. i'm getting to the bottom of this....

Danielle - I am self employed and do not have prescription insurance as it is too expensive. So medication is out of pocket. The reason I used Dex is that it is the cheapest option. Until Teva decided to become greedy that is.

You are correct, there is nothing special, about this medication. It has been made for nearly 80 years. According to Kevin Mannix, at Teva, on their Dec 11th shareholder call:

We have this year already taken 2 dozen price increases. We have for next year planned an equal amount of price increases, and we are mining our 367 products to take advantage of increasing prices in order to still allow for value for our patients, but to increase value to us and to, ultimately, our shareholders.

Obviously, raising price 668%, doesn't add value for patients. This is a pure greed move to increase revenue and "value" to shareholders at the expense of patients. And Teva admitted so on their call.

I am in the same situation. I will end up going bankrupt trying to pay for my medication. I have to take Dextroamphetamine for my narcolepsy. I am currently taking one 10mg tablet 8 times a day, for a total of 240 tablets a month. When I went to Walgreens to get my Rx filled, the Pharmacist warned me that the medication had gone up in price. He had seen that I was going to self-pay, and he wanted to give me a heads up. He then told me that my Rx was going to cost $629. I almost passed out. I thought that maybe it was just Walgreens raising their price up to a ridiculous amount, so I checked with my local Osco Pharmacy only to find out that it was even more expensive there. They quoted it to be $814 for the 240 tablets. The pricing of this medicine has gotten out of hand. I was told that the increase in price is due to a shortage, but I don't see how that is possible. There WAS a major shortage of this medication in my area at the beginning of 2012, but by May of 2012 the shortage was nearly non-existent. During that entire time period, the price never went up and never fluctuated. So how is it that now, at a time when this medication is not even remotely scarce, the price skyrockets?

Today I finally got my scrip for 83.74 for dextroamphetamine 10mg quantity 180 after paying 300.plus dollars the month before. I usually paid 73.84 until december 2012. I used freemedicine.com/medlist/Amphetamine-Dextroamphetamine.shtml printed out the coupon and walgreens accepted it. The link mentioned by another poster was a dead link. I just wanted to pass it along and hope it helps others. I found the link by googling dextroamphetamine price increase. Please pass it along. No one should have to suffer such a price increase, and I will also be forwarding a complaint to the ftc, and hope all of you do to.

I also suffer from narcolepsy. Sleeping all the time is a real non productive way to go through life and I sympathize for everyone with this.

Try phentermine 30 mg spansules. Harder on the liver I believe, but what option do ADHD patients have until the TEVA/BARR Pharmaceutical price gouging is investigated and prosecuted.
