Subutex And Pain

Updated

Good morning everyone. I'm taking Subutex I've been on it for about 6 months now. I'm 62 years old and I'm doing great on the Subutex except at my age I do have severe pain. I'm going to ask my doctor when I go back next month is there anything you can take for pain that will work with the Subutex? I don't mean Tylenol or Ibuprofen because it just doesn't work. Any suggestions you kind people.

Thank you have a great day.
Just hurting.

I'm sorry, but there are no opiates that will work with Subutex. By its very nature, the Buprenorphine in it latches onto your opiate receptors, and takes a stronger hold than all other available opiates, that is one of the ways it helps prevent people from still abusing them, while undergoing treatment with it.

However, since Buprenorphine itself is an opiate, the correct dose does help some people with pain. What dosage are you currently taking?

Pain management sometimes uses that medication, or methadone, for pain. So maybe the dose should be adjusted. But yeah, I agree with the reply you received. That medication has a “blocker” in it so if you take something it won’t work.

Subutex does not have a blocker it is Suboxone that has naltrexone in it. You could introduce other pain meds but it may be dangerous. If I remember correctly Dilaudid is one if not the only pain med that can get through to the neuro transmitters. Please double check all of this I am no longer an authority or in the loop. Good luck. I am also your age and have issues with pain control, it's not easy.

Hi Lizzy. I'm 57 & on Suboxone & Xanax for my INTRACTABLE MIGRAINES/HEAD/ PAIN/OCCIPITAL NEURALGIA & it's working surprisingly well for me.

My one concern, was if I had to have emergency surgery or something & had to be hospitalized, in need of something else for pain, besides the Suboxone. I asked my Dr & he said Ultram (Tramadol) & I looked at him like he was crazy, because I would imagine if I had to have surgery that Ultram is NOT nearly strong enough!!

I've been thinking & am gonna ask my Dr next time, "Why couldn't I get Subutex for extra pain, should that occur." Now with you being on just Subutex, I don't know what you could take for breakthrough meds, if you're on a strong enough dose, once it gets in your system, I would think that you shouldn't need much more, but ask your Dr. Good Luck to you!!

Lizzy...ONE more thing that others mentioned...my Dr said for Suboxone or Subutex to work well for severe pain, you need to be on the correct dose, like three - 8/2 mgs., cause if it's Rx'd for addiction, generally Drs. only Rx 1 or 2...You have to be on a strong enough dose!! What dose are you on?

Probably not! Beings it’s for opiate addiction. It’s definitely not for pain! Good luck!

Re: Liz (# 6) Expand Referenced Message
it does work for SOME people's chronic pain. but it's got to be Rx'd at a high enough dose.

No, Subutex does not have a blocker in it.

I agree, she needs to be on a high enough dose. However, I'm on Suboxone & my doctor said if I ever needed something extra (for surgery or what not) that I could take Ultram with the Suboxone, not that it would help!! In my opinion, Ultram is one step above aspirin if that!!! Best bet is ask your doctor.

Fentanyl can also break through Suboxone.

Have you tried Mobic? It takes a week or so to see results, but it has helped me with fibromyalgia pain. I'm not pain free, but I can function. I was taking ketoprofen for many years, but it's not available in the USA any more. If you are anywhere else in the world, that medication is also a good option. It's an NSAID, but works far, far better than any of the others. It's a prescription med.

My dr told me to take extra strength Tylenol every 4 hours and two after I take a dose of that take a dose of Advil. Keep zigzagging like that and it helps tremendously. Also, Gabbepentin is an option if you can take that, helps with nerve pain.

Mobic gave me the biggest ulcer in my stomach. I had to quit taking it.

I have been on Subutex for four years and when I have a surgery coming up I dose myself down and then the pain meds click in within a day or so but my doctor said that dilaudid is the only drug he knows now that will overcome Subutex

Well as long as your on buprenorphine treatments most pain medications will not work because of the long half life..possibly some ibuprofen 800mg prescribsion strength..now my doctor gives me gabapentin 800mg x 3 daily..I'm pretty sure no other type will work except a few ..now I'm sure for surgery they do have some that will work, I mean they just should. I asked my doctor about this once and he said I'd be ok ..my sister just had major surgery and she is on methadone treatment, and she did fine..

Re: MySheriAmore (# 8) Expand Referenced Message

Subutex, (buprenorphine) has no naloxone in it like suboxone does..I have taken since 2005, way to long, anyway even though it has no naloxone in it no pain pill can complete with its strength. You will never ever feel the effect of any type of pain pill it's a waste of time and money..I have tried in the past detoxing off subs the doctor prescribed percocet 10s every 4 hours along with other comfort medications..I was told wait 12h after my last pill then start the percocet 10s. I did this for 12 days still in detoxification.. I went back on the 12th day because I couldn't take the discomfort without my buprenorphine, he suggested I go back on it until I could regain my weight and health issues and try again later.. now this was my only attempt to jump from buprenorphine using a doctor for help. All the other times I trying on my own..now I'm sure because of the length of time and high dose not to mention my age 59..I'm thinking about this medication I'll probably take it with me when I die. I don't know if I could handle another detox or not. But if I do again it will probably be in a 28 day stay. ..I would never suggest anyone else to use this med. My suggestion would be detox what ever your on first of all because its like wearing handcuffs. It's no better this way then the other. Your still chasing your med..hopeful the money is their. At the beginning even though I have insurance it was still a large copay until years ago slowly the price has dropped. However my scrip is still $45 monthly and my adderall is still $45 monthy..

Obviously we call subutex "buprenorphine" because subutex has not been on the market for many, many years. I would never take suboxone..we have many generics for buprenorphine, However since oct.17 2017 we have finally found our match for brand subutex. Purdue makes it and a company named Rhodes distributes it..it took alot of hard work to find because most chain pharmacy's carry what ever they want and are not going to budge for just one. I take Rhodes 8mg x 3 daily..and they are definitely one of the best generics I have had. Other than old Roxanne 54 411s..but now hikma owns it and the formula has changed..Rhodes are a smooth taste to as it doesn't leave the strong bump taste afterwards. They have 8.64mg but. equilevent to 8mg bup...even though I'm prescribed 3 a day I no longer have to because 2 of these are so much better I'm about to save one by the end of the month I still have 30 left. For just incase..$$ is low. So a guy who has a medschat group I follow him and learned from him. He is a pain patient taking buprenorphine for pain as I differ I am prescribed because of addiction..so if you are looking for a better buprenorphine try these you will be pleased.

You never said how many you take of the buprenorphine?..or dosage from what I have read on different medschat groups 3 or more 8mg for pain a day...I'm prescribed buprenorphine 8mg x 3 day.. most insurance will only cove 3 a day however if your prescribed 4 most will pay cash for the rest .I have found out very few doctors prescribe 2 to 3 and if luck 3. Nowadays it seems unheard of to get 4 at least here in Florida..you should try to get the Rhodes 8mg round white pill marked rp/ b8.. I'm sure you would get relief with these.

Re: MySheriAmore (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

I know of many who take buprenorphine 8mg x4 and it's a mix for pain patients or addiction patients..I believe it all depends on who your doctor is.. if he is set in his ways and he give 2 8mg subs. That's what all his patients get. Back when I started back in 2005 they did prescribe it as to how much and what your addiction was ? But nowadays it's not like that anymore. I have had many doctors since then some go. So I fell like a good amount of experience..not that I'm proud of that, I'm not. I mean same with any doctor this one might prescribe this and the next one doesn't..

Re: Charlene (# 16) Expand Referenced Message

Actually, hydromorphone (dilaudid) or morphine can be felt easily, but of course should only be done so under dr supervision- I've also taken Subs for over ten years, but I am fine with doing so because I never want to go back to a nonfunctioning, miserable life. Subs (in every form, film too) now comes in Generic so that helps with price.

You're right. As with all meds, it depends on the doctor.
