Suboxone And Nyquil
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I have had a couple of bad colds and the flu over the last 6 months. I took NyQuil b cause it's a multi symptom cold and flu reliever. What a surprise when I took it with the suboxone, it helped me better with the pain I expierence. I suffer from multiple medical problems and had many surgeries. Now, I'm not saying 2 go and do this 4 nothing, but, it has really helped me. ( maybe, b cause of the liquid acetaminophen in it. Has anyone else done this or noticed it?

It’s not the same thing. The daytime has a decongestant in it that could make some people feel stimulated, the nighttime will put you to sleep. They are actually different.

You could test this by trying Tylenol. But listen I don’t know how your doctor handles it but I go to pain management and they would freak out if I took Nyquil I would be shut off and fired as a patient. They do not like people using Nyquil and opioids.

I would double check with your doctor or pharmacist first. Some other answers on here indicate that there could be drug interactions between the Buprenorphine and some of the ingredients in NyQuil which may pose a risk.

I'm on 12 mg Suboxone 2 times a day and have a bad cold. I can't breath for s*** and I'm about to take NyQuil. Do you think it'll be safe?

I'm going to try it. I'm only taking 2 mg of subs, twice day, and if 8 mgs didn't hurt you, I'm going to try. In a lot of pain and I need to sleep tonight. I used to take elavil to sleep, but lost my Dr for 5 months. Can't sleep but a few hours here and there. Thanks gorgeous the advice. Bit from what I've read about it, I wouldn't do it ever night. That's my point. Once in awhile should help. Does it really help with pain. Cause I want to die. Had hip and knee surgery, on the same leg, and it's been weeks since sleep. Thanks, ALOT. IM DOING IT TONIGHT. I'll let you know if I sleep.

Re: David (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

There is definitely acetaminophen in Nyquil cold and flu. Looking at the bottle it says Acetaminophen, Doxylamine Succinate, Dextromethorphan HBr.

The diphenhydramine found in ZZZQuil may react with buprenorphine found in Suboxone. You may experience side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating [2].

To the OP and anyone reading this thread - it is technically not safe to take suboxone with nyquil because the buprenorphine interacts with multiple ingredients found in it. You may experience increased dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, or worse yet, a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome [1]. Definitely something to clear with your doctor or pharmacist first!

Dear David, there is acetaminophen in NyQuil. Read the ingrediants on the bottle. It's Tylenol and used for pain relief and fever reducer . Even the store name brands have the same ingredients in them. Check it out.

There's actually not any Acetaminophen in NyQuil, but I do suspect that the antihistamine/hypnotic properties of Doxylamine (in NyQuil) could be one thing that's providing an additional sense of pain relief.

The only other active ingredient in NyQuil is Dextromethorphan, which happens to be a cough suppressant. I also found research stating that Dextromethorphan reduces the severity of painful sensations.

I don't know how much NyQuil is safe to take for long term relief, but it sounds like it can provide that extra buffer that's sometimes needed in the spur of the moment.
