Spotting On Loestrin Vs. Lo Loestrin (Page 2)

Updated

Hi, all-

So the general rule of thumb I've always known is the lower the dose, the higher the chance of spotting/breakthrough bleeding. However, my doctor advised me that LO loestrin might actually lessen the change of intermenstrual bleeding because at a certain point, the dose gets so low that the lining of the uterus doesn't build up sufficiently for any bleeding to occur at all.

My question: has anyone had experience with taking both Loestrin and Lo Loestrin? Did you experience, more, less, or the same amount of spotting/breakthrough bleeding between periods? I totally trust my doctor, yet I'm somehow reluctant to try lest it get even worse...

Thanks!
M

I was originally on LoEstrin about a year and a half ago and I really loved it. I had NO side effects. My periods were extremely regular (I starting taking for birth control but also because I had very very irregular periods). I had to go off the pills for a few months because of a health insurance issue, so I asked my doc about LoLoEstrin. He gave me trial packs and a prescription. I started late April and I HATE these pills. I have breakthrough bleeding randomly during some months and then some months I missed my period all together. I have nausea, which thankfully went down, weight gain, and ridiculous fatigue. I don't know if it's just me but the lower dose is not always better.

I've been on this pill for about two months now, I at the end of my 2nd pack. (Taking the 2nd White pill tonight). I also had an aboration 9/15/2011 (Thursday) and started the pill that sunday 9/18/2011. I have not bled or spotted at all. I do get cramping here and there. I had strong cramping this morning and bloating I have today but no period or spotting or anything. My GYN said that women don't like this pill b/c sometimes you don't get your period or anything and it worries them of being pregnant. I can def. agree with that but I'd feel a little better if I spotted or something. As for other side effects, I got very dizzy the 2nd day of my 2nd pack and I'm afraid of the same thing happening again next week when I start the 3rd pack. I've been very moody and on edge more so than I ever was but other than that, I'm doing ok with this pill. It's the first time I ever took BC and I used to get my period every 3 weeks like clock work so not getting it at all is just very odd to me. Thought I'd just share my thoughts.

I was on Loestrin for about 4 years straight and had pretty regular but light periods. By this I mean they would last about 3 days on average and the flow was either very light and bright red, or even lighter and brownish...sorry if this is a little graphic but I want to be thorough in my explanation because I think a lot of women are freaking out over this...

so anyway, I went off the pill for one month and then started on LoLoestrin and have been on it for two months now. The first month resulted in very light spotting, and during the 2 white and 2 brown pills there was spotting that I would closely describe as nonexistent...just slightly pinkish, extremely light. Then during the beginning of the second month I had spotting that was a little heavier but still extremely light. I am currently taking the 2 white pills in my second month and have not even had a sign of spotting which is how I found this thread because I myself freaked out....but I do feel a lot better now knowing that this seems to be a fairly regular occurrence.

I Hope my situation mirrors at least a couple others out there and puts their minds at ease. I would love if someone would reply to me and let me know if that's the case. It would make me feel better! :) Good luck to everyone!

Hi Melissa. I've now been on Lo Loestrin for 6 months and haven't had any bleeding. I submitted a post a couple of months ago because I was also getting concerned. It seems to be the norm from everyone's posts, but I am not a doctor and have not seen one about it. I hope this gives you some comfort!

I was on loestrin for over a year and switched to lo loestrin just because i thought the lower dose would be better. My periods were like clockwork ever since ive had my first period and Im now 23. I usually get bad cramps at least a week before it comes but after switching to lo loestrin that didnt happen. Ive been on it 3 months now and the first month was normal with some spotting and the second month was light and short, not what im used to and then this month I was supposed to get it on the 25th and its the 27th today so needless to say I was getting anxious because I NEVER missed a period in my life, so I went to get a pregnancy test and took it and thank goodness it was negative!! After reading all these posts about how common it is to miss a period i still didnt believe it because Ive always been so normal, so if you are reading this and are like me, seriously take a deep breath and realize its probably the cause. Im just pissed that the doctor or pharmacy never mentioned that this could happen and normally does happen to most! That should be included, especially to those who are sexually active and rely on their periods. So users beware, missed periods are normal and expected, needless to say, I think Im going back to loestrin!

Normal periods as they would be without birth control while taking loestrin. On lo loestrin spotting with the first month, second month was light and very short, 3 days, and on the third month I had no period or bleeding at all. Hope that helps!

I read this thread because I was worried about the same issues. I went to the gyn for the first time in August and he gave me a prescription for Lo Loestrin Fe. I have been taking it for about six months now. I have no side effects at all except for amenorrhea (no period). I had my period on the first pack exactly when I was supposed to. The second pack, it didn't come at all. The third pack, I had it randomly. I have not had my period at all for the past three packs. I am about to begin my seventh pack and I was very concerned since I have not had my period in months. I read the fine print on the back of the prescription and looked it up on a bunch of websites online. There is not much information about amenorrhea while on the pill, which freaked me out even more. I feel better about it now that I have read all these posts though. I'm glad to know that this is a common side effect. I was debating whether or not I should make an appointment with the doctor but I probably won't now after reading these posts. I don't mind not having a period, I just didn't want something to be wrong with me. I like this pill since I haven't had any other symptoms and would like to stay on it.

I am currently on Lo Loestrin Fe and I want to delay my period (in anticipation of going on a religious pilgrimage). My doctor started me on the pills 2 months early so that my body can adjust to them and I experienced spotting during the 2nd week of my first pack for 8 days and then everything seemed normal. However, when it came to the end of the pack, my doctor instructed my to take the white pills and skip only the brown pills and on the second day of the white pill (before starting on a new pack), I had light bleeding. When I travel for the pilgrimage in a month, I want to make sure NO bleeding happens whatsoever - does this mean that for the next pack, I should skip all the 4 white AND brown pills and start a new pack. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

I got this Rx today and mentioned to my gyn that i wanted to skip a period as well because of my upcoming wedding-he advised that when i get to the last row in the pack start a new pack-then after the week of my wedding go back and take that skipped week..or just keep on with the new one and have my period at the end of the pack....but from the rest of these reviews i'm going to give him a call, i definitely don't want any unforeseen spotting on my wedding day!!

Hi:
I am on my third month of lo loestrin. My dr. had originally put me on loestrin fe for very heavy, very irregular periods (I am 39 years old, started when I was 11). I have always been very regular with severe cramps, vomiting, fainting, and diarrhea during periods, sometimes requiring hospitalization. In the last 5 years or so the cramps have eased up considerably (I still needed advil every month for about a day), but they got very irregular and I started feeling pregnant every month (I am not even sexually active!). Also super heavy flow, changing super plus tampons every couple of hours! I was on loestrein fe for two months and it was wonderful. But I work for a religious organization, and my ins does not cover bc. So my dr switched me to lo loestrin so he could give me samples. Three months into it and I have a moderate period in the middle of cycle, mild cramping, and passing really weird dark clots. ??? Emotionally I've been up and down (but that has been a constant problem with me, bc or no bc). Should I keep on with this pill?? It's kind of a pain spotting and spotting, and I'd like to think it will stop eventually.

I have not had a period since June (it is now September). I was a little concerned with this but my doctor told me the same thing... This is a common "positive" side effect. I can't decide if I like not having one or not!

Prior to starting the Lo LoEstrin, I went from having no period at all (april-september) to getting it twice in one month! I'm only halfway thru my 3rd week, but I started taking the pill on the 1st day of my period, which lasted 8 days, then I was fine up until 2 days ago when i noticed some dark spotting and today its a full blown period. I'm assuming my body just needs to get used to the pill again, but am i really supposed to be experiencing horrible cramping, heavy bleeding, nausea, migraines? And with reading everyone else's posts and also another forum, I'm contemplating stopping.
