Since taking SMZ/TMP DS 800 I've had problems with ligaments of my shoulders and knee. I mentioned this to my doctor & she said it is a side affect but said nothing else about it. I took the drug after taling 2 others and none of them totally cleared up the celulitis in my lower leg...Any coment?

I went to the doctor because of an infection in my lower leg called celluitis. She prescribed an antibiotic which didn't clear it up...then a second antibiotic along with a shot which didn't clear it up, then a shot and a prescription of SMZ/TMP 800mg. That also did not totally clear it up. After taking the last drug, I started having pain in my left shoulder, then my right shoulder. A few days after that I went to step down into a pool and my right knee buckled as I stepped down. I went in for a recheck and explained all this to the doctor. She then told me that ligament problems were a side effect of that drug but said nothing else. My knee is still bothering me but I'm not sure if it will improve on it's own or what. Any advice would be appreciated. As for the original problem, I'm not sure what to do because all these antibiotics can't be good for me.

Liz, I am very sorry about what you are dealing with, especially since the medications aren't working for you.

The aching joints and other joint problems and muscle pains can be side effects from the SMZ/TMP, also sold under the brand name Bactrim and it may take awhile to go away. I recently suffered a bad reaction to it myself and it took several weeks for all of the symptoms to finally stop.

However, I do want to warn you that from what I've read, some people do suffer permanent problems that never go away after taking it.

Learn more Bactrim details here.

Now, as to the infection and the antibiotics, letting the cellulitis continue out of control would be far more dangerous than any risks posed by trying different antibiotics.

My question is, have they cultured it and done testing to identify the specific type of infection? If it's MRSA, then some more in-depth medical attention may be required.

Thank you so much for your response. No, the doctor did nothing but look at my leg & feel how hot it was. I was the one who mentioned cellulitis as I had had it before. She said it was cellulitis & after 3 rounds of different antibiotics & 2 shots she was satisfied as to how it looked. It is somewhat better but now seems to be spreading around the inside of my lower leg. It's very bumpy under the skin, sore to the touch, & my skin feels very tight. I have diabetes so you can understand my concern with this problem. Thanks again.

I've been having pain in my head and I'm pretty sure it's from lack of teeth care. After telling a family member about it I was given a pill of SMZ/TMP DS 800-160 Interpharm. I took it because I knew it was an antibiotic and I figured it would be okay. The question still lingers in my head: Am I safe to take such a pill again? Please help.

Liz my name is Susan {edited for privacy}. I have recently been diagnosed with cellulitis. Did you ever get it under control?

I am experiencing cellulitis again. Had it 5/17/2016 last time. I'm diabetic and I take metformin 2x per day, 500 mg per tab. I have 6 pills left from last time and wondered if they would be ok to use? The date on the bottle is 5/57/2016.
